COMMENTS

Hannah Petticoat is the widow of Nathan Peddicoat (son of William and Sarah Belt), her parents were John Owings and Hannah Stinchcomb. Her will was written 18 Feb 1794 in Washington Co., MD and proved there 12 March 1796. From her will, her children are named: Nathan Petticoat, William Petticoat, Leakin D., and daughters Rachel and Aleithia DAVIS. Rachel married Stephen Davis license date 16 July 1800 in Washington Co., MD. One might assume that Aleithia was married before 1790 and thus does not appear with the family in 1790. Marriage licenses for Washington Co., MD are only existant from 1799 onward, as those from 1776 to 1798 were apparently destroyed in courthouse fires.

Humphrey Peticoat is believed to been the son of William Peddicoat and Sarah Belt. He was married to Rachel Barnes, dauhgter of John Barnes. That the wife of Humphrey was named Rachel is shown in deeds of 1773 in Frederick Co., MD. John Barne's will names a daughter Rachel Peddicoat and the accounting of John Barnes' estate shows a debt to Caleb Peddicord. The only proven child of this couple is Caleb, born 21 Dec 1778, who was apprenticed by his mother to John Merryman Sept 16, 1799, to be taught the trade of a Miller. With 8 males and 3 females in his household, it is thought that he was prbably the son of several other Peddicords in the area including, the Adam Peddicord married to Catharine Fowble on 10 April 1810, Humphrey Peddicord (b. ca. 1777) who married Elizabeth Hooker on 1 April 1809 , Morris Peddicord (b. ca. 1771) who married Keturah Bond on 26 Feb 1793, James Peddicord who married Mary Belt 23 April 1793, and the Nicholas Peddicord who had a child born 2 April 1801 by Amy Barnes. Humphrey is in the Delaware Hundred which is now part of Carroll Co., MD

Dorsey Peticoat is one of two Dorseys found in the 1790 census of Baltimore county. He is in the Back River Upper Hundred, which places him in an area ranging from the environs of Towson across to Reisterstown. On of the Dorseys is thought be been the son of Dorsey Peddicoat (son of John Pedicoat and Sarah Dorsey). It is not possible to tell if this Dorsey was an old man with a woman or a young couple starting life from the census records,

Ann Peticoat is living in the Delaware Hundred, what is now the south eastern part of Carroll County. The fact that a woman is head of the household would indicate that she was either a widow or spinster. It is possible that she is Ann Jacks who married Nicholas Peddicord on 23 Dec 1735, in which case she would have been about 75 years old, or perhaps this Ann is issue of Nicholas and Ann. It is known that Nicholas owned land in the Delaware Hundred, that the land was mortgaged in 1751 and not until 1796 was action taken to forclose the Mortgage. In the papers filed in that case, an affadavit of 1 May 1800 by Vachel Dorsey and Rd Ridgely in the case notes that the property has been occupied by Pettycourt's family or some of them till about two years ago when the same was abandoned and left unoccupied and remains so at this time. This indicates that until 1798 family of Nicholas Peddicord still occupied this tract of land called "Pettycoat's Hope".

Adam Peddecot Adam is most certainly the Adam who married Elizabeth Zimmerman 25 Feb 1783 and was the son of William Peddicord Jr. and Sophia Barnes. Among his household are likely his brother Benedick (ca 1767-1795) who died testate before 8 June 1795. son John (b. ca. 1789), daughter Cassandra (v. ca. 1787) and perhaps a son William of whom little is known

Dorsey Peddecot This is the second Dorsey in the 1790 census of Baltimore county. This Dorsey appears to be married and have a family. Perhaps this is the Dorsey Peddicord said to been the father of Dorsey Peddicord (b. ca. 1777 and died 7 Dec 1853 in Morgan Co., OH who was married to Ann Banks on 21 Oct 1801 in Baltimore and later to Eliabeth Brown and the son of Dorsey Peddicord of John and Sarah (Dorsey) Peddicord.

William Peddecot is believed to been the son of William Peddicord Jr and his wife Sophia Barnes. He was married on 5 Nov 1788 to Elizabeth Hobbs, daughter of Capt. Thomas Hobbs.

Jasper Peddicort of Montgomery county This Jasper is the son of William Peddicord and Sarah Belt, HE married his cousin, Rebecca Belt. While Jasper owned considerable land in Montgomery county, these records need yet to be examined to prove his issue. However, it is believed that his issue includes: Jasper J Jr., Caleb, George Greenbury, John Carleton, and Higgenson Peddicord along with several daughters.

Jasper Peddicoat of Anne Arundel county This Jasper is the son of William Peddicord Jr. and Sophia Barnes. He was married to Amelia Hobbs 23 Oct 1785, another daughter of Capt. Thomas Hobbs. the two males under 16 in his household are believed to be sons Caleb (b. ca. 1786) and William (b. 19 Dec 1788).

There are others who would likely been in Maryland that are not shown in the census, Joseph Peddicord (b. 11 April 1753 and died 4 May 1834 in Anne Arundel Co) is not found in any Federal census indexes. He his known from his death notice and in some 1770s Montgomery Co., MD documents.

1790s TAX LISTS OF KENTUCKY

Floyd Co., KY Tax list for 1793 lists John Peddicord with 1 male over 21, 2 blacks, 3 cattle and 13 acres of land.

Comments

John Peddicord found in KY in 1783 is apparently the John Peddicord who married Rebecca Boring on 27 Aug 1771 in St John's Parish of Baltimore county. It would seem most likely that he is a son of Dorsey Peddicord of John and Sarah Dorsey PEDDICORD.
