Robeline Cemetery

Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, LA

The Robeline Cemetery is located on the south side of LA Hwy 6, inside the city limits. It is situated on a hill in a peaceful wooded area. The oldest marked burials appear to be those of Luther Birdwell (died 31 Jan 1847, aged 43), Eleanor Dawson Carter ( born 15 Feb 1880, died 30 July 1880 ) and Joel M. McCook ( born 05 Nov 1842, died 07 Sep 1882).

In reading the cemetery, it was noted that there were numerous burials in the years of 1919-1920. The following excerpt from the local newspaper, The Natchitoches Times, may shed some light on the possible causes of these deaths.

"During the influenza epidemic about 500,000 people died in the United States; the economic loss from death, sickness, and debility was reckoned to be between three and four billion dollars."

In the listing below, those burials marked with asterisks appear in various sources as being located in the Robeline Cemetery. However no markers were found for those persons in the 'reading' done in January 1998. There are seveal graves with illegible markers, as well as a number of indicated but unmarked graves.
