Robeline African-American Cemetery

Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, LA, USA

Location: On LA 120, south of Robeline, LA approximately one mile. Turn South at the junction of LA 6 and LA 120 (one block west of the one traffic light in Robeline), travel approximately one mile ( will pass the large Robeline Cemetery on the left); a small entry road is on the left, with a secured automobile gate. A smaller entry is provided for foot traffic.

This is a spacious cemetery with numerous unmarked graves. Rev. Sapp of the Robeline Church parish is a helpful contact person for those seeking to visit the cemetery.

A broken stone in the vicinity of the J.C. Smith gravesite is inscribed with the following :

2 1852

Age 102

Asleep in Jesus

The upper part of the stone is broken off and apparently has been lost or mislaid, so no name can be attached to the above inscription.

A number of gravesites have been marked with metal crosses, iron pipe, concrete blocks, brick and rocks. A concrete vault to the right of the marked grave of Ester Little Page is marked only by the following inscribed in the concrete: 'Daddy Jim'.

The cemetery is well maintained, with several large shade trees and is enclosed by cyclone fencing. The entry gate for persons on foot is unusual, being what is generally referred to in this area as a 'cattle gate', allowing for the passage of people but impossible for cattle to negotiate. In earlier years this area would have been 'free range' for cattle, so this is a particulary efficient type entry. Unfortunately, it is seldom seen anymore.

Just prior to this visit to the cemetery, a new burial had occurred. Limited information was available as indicated in the listing: OWENS, Kesonia ( / 1998 ) . However the various offerings indicated that it was the burial of a teen or young adult and great sadness was expressed at the passing.
