04:45:37 1997 ---- BROWN
I am looking for information on Captain John W. Brown (1839-1864)
of Natchitoches Parish. He was Captain of Co. A "Lecompte
Guards",
2nd Louisiana Infantry until being wounded at Chancellorsville, Va.
on May 3, 1863. Captain Brown was killed in action at Stowe's Ferry
in Tallapoosa County, Alabama on July 17, 1864 while serving as
a enlisting officer for the C.S. Army. This was during Rousseau's Raid.
The Captain's parents were John W. & Mary H. Brown of Natchitoches
Parish. Apparently the Captain was a school teacher before the
war. Would like to hear from descendents and other persons with
information
that might assist in marking his last resting place.

James Elliott was on 1840 Natchitoches Par. There was one other male
(age 20-30) in this household, who may be my ancestor, James F. Elliott.
James F. was at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836, and served 2 yrs in
the Army of the Republic of TX. He was back in Natchitoches LA where he
rec'd a land grant in DeSoto Par - 1849. He m Elizabeth McMillan of
Panola Co/TX. They were on DeSoto census in 1850; then moved to Panola
Co/TX. Does anyone have any info re when James Elliott came to LA and
from where? James F said he was born in SC in 1815-20 (depending on
which census is read). There is also some indication that he lived in
AL. Is there any cemetery record for James?
What were the provisions of the "Act of Congress of the 24th April,
1820," as it affected the Natichitoches land grants?
I wonder why James F rec'd his 40+ acres.
Any info will be appreciated. I have scads of info on James F.'s
descendants and will share.

Research in Natchitoches Parish question????
Can anyone tell me an explanation of how children in Spanish Catholic
families were named? I assume as in French Catholic families, the first
name was usually that of a Saint, then the given name, then the surnames
of the father? But what was the method used in the early families of
Spanish heritage? I have a question about a family in
the early days of Natchitoches Parish. In early records an individual
is named Joseph Desidere Pareillo when he marries yet in later records
he has become simply Joseph Desidere. I found the same thing in another
relative in this family--there was an individual named Philozam Desidere
Pareillo, Philozam Pareillo, and finally his succession was filed by the
name of Philozam Desidere. In one family document there is an individual
listed as a witness who signed him name as Desidere Pareillo. These
families
lived in Natchitoches Parish in the mid to late 1800s. Can someone
explain this evolution of these surnames in Natchitoches Parish history?
Thank You, Susan

I am trying to find information on the GASTON family. I have recently
discovered on my grandmother Elsie GASTON Rodrigues' death certificate
her father's name was listed as W.P. Gaston and that he was from GA. On
my last trip to LA in Oct. I found a Walter P. Gaston married a Maymie
Solice in 1905. My grandfather George Rodrigues was listed as security
on the marriage bond. I would think that if he is my grandmother's
father that this would be his second marriage as my grandmother was born
in 1870 in MS. I also found that W.P. was given some property by a
Jennie Solice who was the mother of Maymie Solice. Fisher Solice was the
father of Maymie. I would appreciate any information anyone might have.
Thanks. Elaine

Dec 26 17:20:19 1997 ---- SNODDY
Searching for information on Andrew Snoddy and his descendants. Andrew
Snoddy, born circa 1755, was still a minor when his elder brother, John
Snoddy, made his will in February 1775. There are records of payments to
him for services in the North Carolina military forces during the
Revolutionary War. In April 1781, he became the Adjutant of the First
Regiment of South Carolina State Troops under the command of Lt. Colonel
Wade Hampton. Andrew Snoddy survived the war and returned to North
Carolina, where in January 1786 he signed a security bond in Rowan County
for the marriage of his half-sister, Elizabeth Neill. Then he shifted
west, stopping first in the Nashborough settlements (he is listed in
numerous Davidson County court proceedings), then continuing into
Louisiana where in the 1810 Federal Census counted him in Rapides Parish
on the Red River. In 1819, his half-brother, James "Nail"
(Neil) swore in Butler County, Kentucky, court that "Andrew Snoddy
died near Natchitoches Pecan Point." Pecan Point was
one of the principal early settlement on the Red River in the Arkansas
Territory north of Louisiana.
