St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery

Cloutierville, LA

St. John
Cemetery

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Cemetery has served the people of the lower Cane River area since the early 1800's. Alexis Cloutier, whose plantation was a thriving entity by 1804, took note of the great increase in population of the large parish of Natchitoches, and conceived a plan to divide the parish. In 1816, he began to lay out the streets of his town, Cloutierville, and donated a plot of the land for church use, establishing the 'mission of St. Jean Baptiste'.(1) Cloutier built a town house for his family and slowly persuaded other area plantation owners to do the same. The town grew and was incorporated by the state of Louisiana in 1822.(2)

However, Cloutier's petition to divide the parish, making Cloutierville the parish seat of the new parish, was not received well by the parish population in general. Their dissention was made known to the state legislature, resulting in the denial of the original petition for division presented by Cloutier's friend, Senator Placide Bossier.(1) In time Natchitoches Parish, which comprised all of northwest Louisiana, would be divided into twelve additional parishes, but not according to the plan of Alexis Cloutier.

The town of Cloutierville grew and became a small center of commerce for the area by the middle 1800's. Jean Baptiste Charleville arrived in 1825, establishing a mercantile business, as did Charles Claude Bertrand in 1842. Antoine Marinovich was engaged in the merchandising business in Cloutierville in the 1850's. Dr. F.M. Normand set up practice in 1824. Several of these gentlemen married into the Rachal family, one of the oldest families of the area. The plantation owners of the area contributed to the growth of the town. The names of many of these old families of the Rivierre aux Cannes area are seen on the markers in the cemetery.(2)

Visiting priests attended to the needs of the parishioners of Cloutierville for some years. In 1847 Father H. Figari was the pastor, succeeded in 1850 by Father G. Guy. In 1855 the Very Reverend Jean M. Beaulieu became the pastor and remained until his death in 1897.(2) A monument to mark the gravesite of Father Beaulieu is a prominent feature in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Cemetery in Cloutierville.

Beaulieu

Cloutierville, a small town with a big history, was also the home of author Kate O'Flaherty Chopin during the late 1800's. A native of St. Louis, she married Oscar Chopin, and came to live in New Orleans. Due to business reverses, Oscar Chopin moved his family to Cloutierville in 1879, purchasing the townhouse built by Alexis Cloutier in the 1820's. From that home he attended to the business of the family plantation and other businesses in the town of Cloutierville. Oscar Chopin died a few years later, and Kate Chopin continued to operate the family businesses. Here she collected materials for her later stories, most of which were set in the Natchitoches Parish/River aux Cannes area. Most of her published works were written after her return to the home of her grandmother, Madame Charleville, in St. Louis. Kate Chopin died in 1904, her work unrecognized until many years later. Today, her home, the house built by Alexis Cloutier, stands near the entrance to the main thoroughfare of Cloutierville, a museum honoring her life and work. A few blocks down the street is the cemetery, on land donated by Alexis Cloutier.

Kate Chopin Bayou Folk Museum

Today, Cloutierville boasts a new church building replacing the older building which burned some years ago. It is located about one-half block past the cemetery. The cemetery is well-kept and offers visitors a pleasant and peaceful stroll through history, as many of the early settlers and their descendants' names are reflected on the flower-adorned markers. It is unfortunate that many of the older markers are now illegible and that, according to local residents, there are a number of unmarked graves sites.

Among those to whom special thanks are extended are: Mrs. Doris Roge, Mrs. Ernestine Brevelle LaCaze, Mrs. Gracie Longlois LaCaze, Mr. and Mrs. Lutell Brossett, and Mr. and Mrs. Levy Merrell Derbonne.
