The May 2008 meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical
Society was held in the Meeting Room
of the
Main Branch of the Lafayette Public
Library
on May 15, 2008 at 6:30 P.M. President
Earl
Gates called the meeting to order.
There
was a moment of silence and the Pledge
of
Allegiance was given.
The minutes and treasurer�s report
are posted
on the internet at our web site.
Visitors were recognized as Stacey
Barkley
who is beginning to research the Duplechain
line and an Italian line from the New
Orleans
area. Paul Robertson besides researching
the African-American Robertson line
in the
area is searching the Glover line from
Jackson,
MS.
Warren LeBlanc reported that he had
2 books
of cemetery listings from Starks, LA.
Pedigree
Charts from society members are needed.
Due
to a computer malfunction the minutes
are
available at this meeting and they
will be
posted ASAP on our website. Brenda
Fuselier
reported on the seminar in Baton Rouge
held
by Louisiana State Genealogical Society
that
six society members attended. She also
announced
that a Genealogy Lecture Series will
be held
in Mandeville, LA on Saturday, June
21, 2008
from 8:30 to 4:30 P.M. at the Life
Church,
5200 LA Rt.22 (across from Beau Chene).
The
speaker will be Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak
who is the Chief Genealogist for Ancestry.com,
author, and genealogy lecturer. Cost:
$55.
President Gates then presented the
powerpoint
program, Researching Vital Records;
a handout
was available as a further aid for
members
doing their own research. Searching
aids,
websites, and methods are noted and
upgraded;
the information given applies to each
state.
Charles Patterson gave notice that
due to
the Lafayette Main Library�s summer
program
for children that the first Saturday
genealogy
gathering will be held at the Carencro
Branch.
BUT it will be held on the second Saturday
due to another commitment on the first
Saturday
of June and July and those meetings
will
start at 10:30 A.M. The regular third
Thursday
meetings will be held at Grace Presbyterian
Church at 6:30 P.M. for the months
of June
and July.
There was a brief question and answer
period.
Charles Patterson encouraged all members
to consider creating a website for
their
family; help and assistance is offered
by
Charles and Earl.
There being no further business the
meeting
was adjourned.
