The March 2007 meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical Society was held in the Meeting Room of the Main Branch of the Lafayette Public Library on March 15, 2007 at 6:30 P.M.  The meeting was called to order by President  Charles Patterson.  A moment of silence was observed and the Pledge of Allegiance was given.

Julaine Deare Schexnayder was introduced and she spoke to the members about the crisis at the Patoutville Cemetery where three or four dozen historic vaults are slated for destruction if no family members are found that will make a claim and assume responsibility for restoration and maintenance.  Friends of the Historic St.Nicholas Cemetery in Patoutville has been formed to locate descendants of those buried there and inform them of the situation.  Some of the names of those that need identification are Derouen, Gary, Louviere, and Lyons.  Posters with pictures of the tombs slated for destruction were on display.  Reports and updated news may be found at www.thecajun.com.  Or Julaine may be contacted at tel. (337) 365-7667 or 2011 Old Jeanerette Rd., New Iberia, LA  70563.

The Minutes of the February meeting are on the societys web site.  Due to the absence of the treasurer, that report will be given at a later date.

Speaker for the meeting was member Earl Gates who gave a PowerPoint presentation on Using Familysearch.Org.

There was not any old business to cover.  Genealogy 101 will continue on the first Saturday of May(5 May 2007) at the Main Branch of the Lafayette Public Library in the Genealogy Section on the second floor.  The topic for May will be Using Maps.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,
