The June 2007 meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical
Society was held in the Dining Area
of the
Grace Presbyterian Church on June 21,
2007
at 6:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order by President
Charles Patterson. A moment of silence was observed, followed
by the Pledge of Allegiance.
President Patterson reminded members of the
genealogical conference sponsored by
the
Southwest Louisiana Genealogical and
Historical
Library, Libraries Southwest, and the
Southwest
Louisiana Genealogical Society that
will
be held at the Lake Charles Civic Center
on Saturday, October 27, 2007 from
8:30 A.M.
to 3:30 P.M. There will be three speakers, vendors, and
a box lunch for early registrants for
the
fee of $25. There will also be an opening reception with
the opportunity to research at the
Genealogical
Library. For further information contact
Shirley Burwell, Head Genealogist,
or the
Genealogy staff at the Southwest Louisiana
Genealogical and Historical Library
at tel.
(337) 437-3490, e-mail [email protected], or by snail mail at 411 Pujo Street, Lake
Charles, LA70601-4254.
President Patterson announced to the membership
that there will be a First Saturday at the Main Branch of the
Lafayette Public Library. Even if the first floor meeting room is not
available for the Genealogical Society,
we
will meet on the second floor in the
genealogical
section. A tentative subject will be a photograph
workshop if the library computer setup
is
available. Those in attendance will learn how to put
photographs in place in their computer
genealogy
program, how to take out, enhance,
and organize
their photographs.
President Patterson requested volunteer members
for the Budget Committee and the Christmas
Banquet Committee. Members were asked to consider candidates
for officers for the 2008 year.
Warren LeBlanc announced that long time member
Woodley Hebert has died.
Charles Patterson informed members about
a new free service that AOL offers.
Ones
pictures may be stored at their site
at no
cost. Charles noted that this is an excellent place
to store photos as a secondary backup. It also frees up space on the computer hard
drive. It can be accessed to have pictures printed. It can be accessed by people that are selected
by the person storing the photos. They can also be used as a slide show presentation. Other sites may be offering services like
this; Snapfish, flickr, and Photobucket
are
other examples.
Earl Gates demonstrated the You Tube website
that allows people to create a video
for
so many minutes and post it at this
site. There are some genealogy tutorials plus other
info available. An e-mail has been sent to all members with
the site address.
Earl Gates presented the program Finding
Your Way Home: Using Maps in Genealogy
Research
using a power point presentation. Members were given a handout relating to
