The January 2007 meeting of the Lafayette
Genealogical Society was held in the
Meeting
Room of the Main Branch of the Lafayette
Public Library on January 18, 2007
at 6:30
P.M. The meeting was called to order by President
Charles Patterson. A moment of silence was observed and the
Pledge of Allegiance was given.
The president informed the membership of
the Genealogy 101 programs that will
be held
every first Saturday of each month. A basic genealogy power point presentation
will be given each month; it will be
free
and open to the public. After the informational session assistance
will be offered to participants in
searching
for their families, or for clarifying
records
they may have. Members from the society are encouraged to
attend and assist. Charles then gave the power point presentation,
Beginning Genealogy to the society
members.
An update of the Lafayette Genealogical Society
web site was demonstrated by President
Patterson. Since its inception there have been 2173
hits on the site.
The program was turned over to Earl Gates
who gave a power point presentation
on DNA
in Genealogy. The Family Tree DNA company was discussed. A pedigree chart would accompany the DNA
sample and a report of family names
would
by sent to the submitter.
President Charles Patterson reported that
he and Earl Gates hope to get their
power
point presentations on CDs for use
by the
membership.
Announcements: An inquiry for a 1979 newspaper
obituary was requested. Longtime member Mrs. Olympe Butcher is in
the hospital, but reported doing well. The Lake Charles genealogy society will have
its first quarterly meeting Saturday,
January
20, 2007.

The Cemetery Project will resume when warm
weather arrives. Dottie Burleigh spoke of a Greenlawn Cemetery
listing that noted who was related
to whom,
and how that might be beneficial to
genealogical
researchers. It was suggested that the cemetery and obituary
project might be coordinated so that
a tombstone
and obituary might be shown together
[ printed
or on our web site]. For funeral home records that the society
is looking into developing, it was
suggested
that the Acadia genealogical society
be consulted,
especially for format and pointers. Funeral homes would need to be consulted
to determine their willingness and
cooperation.
There being no further business, the meeting
was closed.
Respectfully submitted,
Brenda Fuselier, Secretary
