Minutes of the Lafayette
Genealogical Society
January 20, 2011
The Lafayette Genealogical Society ushered in the
year 2011 with president Brenda Fuselier presiding. The first meeting
of the year was January 20 at 6:00 p.m. at the South side library.
After the opening ritual, as prescribed in the constitution, she
called on Everett Thompson to present the program, A User’s View of
Ancestry.Com. More than two-dozen members and guests listened
attentively to his presentation. He was particularly impressed with
the shaking green leaf suggestions that Ancestry.com provides to help
further genealogy and the ability to interact with others who may be
researching your line.
The business meeting followed. Brenda announced we
need a vice-president.
The UL library is hosting an exhibit that depicts
Louisiana on the eve of the civil war.
Members are invited to meet Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
at the Dupre library in the Jefferson Caffery Reading Room. Jean
Kiesel, a former president of the society, created the exhibit.
Tentative plans were made for a Lake Arthur Heritage
Tour February 23.
Mr. Lolar, Genealogy librarian, brought copies of an
article in the Fort Worth newspaper about new facilities the National
Archives is opening in the Montgomery Plaza location on the West
Seventh Street Area. A small cadre of trained volunteers will be on
hand to help guide visitors with their research. The vast holdings of
public records date from 1777 to 2003. It includes materials from
Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. It is one of 10 regional
centers nationwide. It will have free access to many paid genealogical
sites and 10 public-access computers. The archives building is located
in a development loaded with restaurants, watering holes and shops.
Warren LeBlanc, treasurer, reported the ending
balance for 2010 was $2,941.26.
James Bourque announced Grand Reveil Acadien 2011 to
be held October 7-16 in New Orleans.
Members and guests were invited to enjoy
refreshments.
