The regular monthly meeting of the Lafayette Genealogical Society was called to order by President Brenda Thibodeaux on Thursday May 15, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the meeting room of the South Regional Library. Following the pledge of allegiance, a moment of silence was observed for our military and ancestors.

Warren LeBlanc gave the treasurer's report. The beginning balance is $2,961.18. Income from dues $160 and books sold, $35.00, brings the ending balance to $3,156.18. There are 12 new members in 2014 and 11 members with dues unpaid.

Under old business, Brenda asked if any cemetery books were sold. Warren said there were no new sales. Lorene Auld and Brenda Thibodeaux submitted family trees for the society's annual CD.

Under new business, Brenda Thibodeaux shared copies of the research chart that she uses when going to churches and courthouses. Copies are available after the meeting.

Elaine Lopez stated that she is still having problems receiving society emails. Members suggested adding the address to her contacts so it would not be treated as spam.

Brochures on the Federation of Genealogical Societies annual conference in San Antonio may be picked up after the meeting.

Shane K. Bernard, local historian and curator of McIlhenny at Avery Island, was introduced as the guest speaker. Mr. Bernard gave a power point presentation on one of his books "Cajuns and Their Ancestors". The book covers the period 1604-present. Though written as a text for young adults, it is a very concise history for adults.

He divides the book into these periods:
1. The Acadians 1604-1755
2. The Expulsion 1755-1764
3. Louisiana 1764-1861
4. Birth of the Cajuns 1861-1940
5. "Americanization" of the Cajuns 1941-1968
6. The Cajun Revival 1968-present

Pat Snyder moved to adjourn and it was seconded by Pete Peterson.
