 LAFAYETTE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING

AUGUST 19, 2010
The Lafayette Genealogical Society held the meeting August 19, 2010 at the new
library on Johnston Street at 5:00 p. m. to accommodate the speaker, Mr. Michel
Antoine Nicolas. William Thibodeaux called the meeting to order welcoming members
and guests. He began with the ritual of a moment of silence for our service men and
women, for our families and the infirmed. James Bourque led us in the Pledge of
Allegiance. William announced the sale of cemetery books and CDs on the Broussard
Sacred Heart Cemetery available for $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members.
He announced the August 24 road trip to the Louisiana Archives in Baton Rouge and
the program for the September 4th Saturday meeting on Ancestry.com. The September
16th meeting will feature guest speaker, Judge Saloom, retired. October 2nd Dr. John P.
Doucet from Nicholls State University will talk on human molecular genetics and DNA.
Dr. Doucet not only teaches at Thibodeaux, he is also a poet, playwright, columnist and
editor.
Mr. Nicolas, who is president of the Louisiana Basque Society, came from New
Orleans to present a two-hour program on the history of Basque and the origin of
Louisiana surnames. An eager audience of 60 people from a large area surrounding
Lafayette welcomed him. His presentation was informative, educational and witty. He
answered questions continuing until the library closed at 8:30 p.m.
Lona Bourque was successfully placed in charge of refreshments to be provided
for the meeting by club members. This was a challenge because she knew attendance
would double or triple regular attendance.
Respectfully submitted
