When the Territory of Orleans was
divided into counties by the Territorial Legislature on April 10, 1805,
the present-day Catahoula Parish was a part of Rapides County.
Catahoula Parish was formed on
March 23, 1808. The parish derived its name from the Tensas Indian name
"catoola", which means big, clear lake. However, Catahoula Lake
is now in LaSalle Parish, orginally the western half of Catahoula Parish. The
parish seat of Catahoula is Harrisonburg. With an area total of 703.7
square miles, Catahoula Parish has 10 public schools, 49 churches and
one airport. Jonesville is located on the site of Ancient Anilco,
an Indian village landscaped with mounds. Jonesville was once called Troy.
In 1908 LaSalle Parish was formed
from Catahoula Parish.........SO if you are not finding your folks in
Catahoula Parish cemeteries, census records, etc. from 1910 on, be sure
and check in LaSalle Parish.
