George Henry (Bud) PHELPS, 80, was found dead at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the rear of his home on South Broadway. Coroner J.
Murray BLUE of Clay conducted an inquest and returned a verdict that death was caused by a heart attack. He had been subject
to a heart ailment for some time. Survivors are the wife, Sallie; three sons, Thurman and Charlie Phelps, Providence, and Lambert
Phelps, Mannington; three daughters, Mrs. John WHITE, and Mrs. Robert PERRY, Providence, and Mrs. Elvy OAKLEY of
Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, John of Providence, Jess of Repton, and Porter Phelps of Corydon; sixteen grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Christian church, Providence, with the Rev.
H.B. SELF, of Henshaw, former pastor, officiating. Pallbearers were Shady COLE, Raymond COX, Roscoe WOOD, B.C. LANGLEY,
John SIGLER, and Clarence BALL. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Clay.

Mrs. Katherine Belle PHELPS, 68, wife of John Phelps, died at 12:35 a.m. Friday in the home of her son, J.W. Phelps in the Johnston Island section, following a long illness. Mrs. Phelps was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. G.W. BUELL and was born in Webster county. She was a member of the Clay Baptist church. Survivors are the husband; two daughters, Mrs. Newton BOBO, of Spottsville, and Mrs. Elmer HOLT, of Providence; four sons, Carl, of Terre Haute, Ind., John W. and Robert, Nebo rural route, and Vent, of Wheatcroft; a sister, Mrs. T.C. HOPPER, near Providence; and a brother, Neal Buell, of Clay. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the General Baptist church in Providence, with the Rev. Charles HOWARD, of Clay, officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Clay.

Mrs. Abbie PHILLIPS, 38, died at 5:10 p.m. Monday at the home of her sister, Mrs. W.W. BRACKETT, near Poole. Mrs. Phillips
was postmistress at Poole until she became ill a few months ago. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors are
the husband, Jack Phillips; two sons, Pvt. Robert L. BRADLEY, U.S.M.C.R., San Diego, Calif., and Eugene Ray Bradley, at home; the mother, Mrs. Mary P. SELLARS, Poole; five sisters, Mrs. E.Y. LASLIE, Mt. Vernon, Ind., Miss Poole Sellars, and Mrs. Katherine Berkenier of
Poole, Mrs. W.W. Brackett, near Poole, Mrs. Coleman SHADRICK of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, E.G. Sellars, just returned from
four years overseas service in the Navy, and Sgt. Roger M. Sellars, APO New York. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Friday
afternoon in the Methodist church in Poole. The Rev. E.Y. Laslie of Mt. Vernon, Ind., the Rev. Obie KYLE of Robards, and the Rev.
D.P. ROYSTER, of Corydon will officiate. The body will lie in state in the church from 1 o'clock Friday afternoon until time for the
funeral. Burial will be in Shady Grove cemetery, Poole. The Eastern Star will have charge of services at the grave.

Mrs. Atha PHILLIPS, 80, whose home was near Sebree, died at 1:40 a.m. Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucille YOUNG, in Evansville. Surviving besides the daughter are the husband, Charles; three sons, William T., Charles M. and Gilbert M., of Evansville; three brothers, Romey MELTON, of Robards, Grover Melton, South Bend, Ind., and Bryan Melton, Evansville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Baptist church in Poole. Burial was in Shady Grove cemetery, Poole.
Providence Journal-Enterprise, Thursday, September 16, 1948. Compiler's note: I believe Atha Phillips' age in this obituary to be in error. Atha Melton Phillips is the daughter of John W. Melton and Nancy E. Cavanah, who were married 16 Oct 1876 Webster Co KY. Atha Melton is listed in the 1895 Webster County School Census as the six-year-old daughter of J.W. Melton. She is in the 1900 census with her parents and is listed as a twelve-year-old who was born in May 1888. Her stone at Shady Grove Cemetery gives her dates as 1888-1948, so she would have been 60 years old in 1948, not 80 years old.
Mrs. Edith PHILLIPS, 33, died at 10 a.m. Saturday at her home on Route 1, Providence, after a long illness. Survivors are the husband, Charlie Phillips; a son, Charles William, at home; two daughters, Shirley Ann and Sue, at home; mother, Mrs. Lenora LYNN, Providence; two brothers, James W. Lynn, Dawson Springs, and Orville Lynn, Nebo; and three sisters, Mrs. Richard BEARD of Evansville, Mrs. George DURHAM of Mortons Gap, and Miss Goldie Lynn, Providence. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Corinth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Archie OLIVER of Evansville officiating. Burial was in Slover cemetery.

Mrs. George PHILLIPS, 62, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, in her home in Crofton, following an illness of a year and five months. Survivors are the husband, George H. Phillips; two daughters, Mrs. W. Ed WILLIAMS, Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Thelma ALLARD, Cheyenne, Wyol; five sisters, Mrs. Lizzie LONG and Mrs. Olery THOMPSON, Herrin, Ill., Mrs. Flossie ADAMS of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Mrs. Tim DUNNING of Crofton; and a brother, Ellis ARMSTRONG, Crofton. Mrs. Margaret NISWONGER and Mrs. R.L. MOORE, Providence, are sisters-in-law. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Myers Funeral Home in Crofton, with the Rev. W.I. MUNDAY of Hopkinsville officiating. Pallbearers were nephews, Raggon, Conard, Yates, Martin, and Ted Niswonger, and Arnold Moore.

Lee PHILPOT, 56, Providence, was killed at 7:45 a.m. Friday by falling slate at Low Moisture Coal Company mine. Mr. Philpot, a
timber man, and Cecil GREEN, unit foreman, had gone into a room to prepare it for machine men to cut, and found some draw
slate supported by safety timber near the face of the room. Mr. Philpot removed the safety timber to pull the slate, and tried to pull
it with his pick, but was unable to do so. He then took a bar and walked under the slate in order to get to the other side to begin
work. The slate fell as he walked under it. He died within a few minutes, before he could be removed to the outside. Survivors are
the wife, Mrs. Ella Philpot; four daughters, Mrs. Buford FREDERICK and Mrs. Bernie SIMPSON of Providence, Mrs. Carl PHELPS,
Rock Springs, Wyo., and Mrs. Delmer MURPHY of Evansville; one son, Clyde Philpot, of Evansville; two stepsons, R.E. NICHOLS
of Chicago, Ill., and R.M. Nichols, in the south Pacific; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Elmer WELCH of Chicago, and Mrs. James

services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the General Baptist church, with the Rev. W.T. WINSTEAD officiating, assisted by the Rev.

Mrs. Mag PICKENS, 85, died Monday afternoon in her home in Blackford. Survivors are the husband, Joe; a son, Jim Pickens, Blackford; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Blackford, with the Rev. J.R KING officiating, assisted by the Rev. Guy MOORE. W.T. PICKENS, 91, died Wednesday in his home in Blackford following a few days' illness. Survivors are his wife, Brinie; two sons, A.H. Pickens, Providence, and W.L. Pickens, Princeton; and a brother, Joe Pickens, Blackford. Funeral services were to be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the home in Blackford, with the Rev. J.R. KING officiating. James Earl PIERCE, 47, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Providence, died at 3 p.m. Monday in a St. Louis hospital. Surviving are two sons, Robert of Evansville, and James Earl Pierce, jr., in the Air Force; his father, Cad Pierce, Crittenden county, near Providence; a sister, Mrs. Carline ORR of St. Louis; and a half-sister, Mrs. Alton BROWN, Providence. The body was brought Wednesday to Melton Funeral Home and will remain there until time for funeral services which will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Green Grove Church. The Rev. Ila WHITFELD will officiate. Burial will be in Cullen cemetery.

Donald PINKSTON, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pinkston, Rt. 2, Sebree, and two other Sebree youths, James JOHNSON, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Johnson, Rt. 2, Sebree; and Charles SMITH, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith of Sebree, are all dead as the result of a tragic automobile collision late Friday afternoon near Owensboro. In Our Lady of Mercy Hospital at Owensboro are John WALKER, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Walker, and Hugh DONAHOO, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Houston Donahoo, all of Sebree. Both have been in critical condition but were reported improving Wednesday. Johnny MYERS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Myers, of Sebree, was treated at an Owensboro hospital but was returned home Sunday and is considered out of danger. All six of the youths were enroute to Lewisport where the Sebree basketball team was scheduled to play Friday night. The game, however, was cancelled following the accident. Pinkston, Smith, and Donahoo were players on the Sebree squad. The accident occurred when the car occupied by the youths crashed head-on into a transport gasoline truck at the intersection of highways 54 and 81, three miles west of Owensboro. Arthur HUSK, of Evansville, Ind., truck driver, escaped serious injury. Investigating officers stated that the Pinkston car was headed east on Highway 54, and the truck was making the turn on Highway 81, to go south, when the two vehicles collided. The automobile hit under the truck and was carried down the road about 60 feet, before the larger vehicle was brought to a stop. The highway was made slippery by snow, and the visibility was poor due to a falling snow at the time. It was stated that Pinkston failed to see the truck until it was too late. Pinkston was killed instantly in the crash and Johnson was removed in an ambulance to the Owensboro-Daviess County hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Smith died about an hour after the accident at another Owensboro hospital. James M. LYNCH, principal and coach of the Sebree high school, said several students in addition to the players were making the trip to Lewisport and that Pinkston's vehicle was the last to leave Sebree. A few minutes after the car passed him a short distance east of Sorgho, Lynch said he came upon the wreck and assisted in removing the boys from the car. Lynch said the regulars and some of the reserves on the Sebree basketball team had gone to Lewisport earlier for a dinner in their honor at the home of B.L. SIZEMORE, principal and coach of the Lewisport high school and formerly of Sebree. Sizemore was called and the game was cancelled but information of the tragedy was withheld until after the visitors had finished their meal. Funeral services for Donald Pinkston were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Christ in Poole with Robert ADAMSON officiating. Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Pinkston and Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie DUNCAN, all of the Sebree country. Burial was in Fairmont cemetery in Henderson.

Donald Lee PINKSTON, 15, member of Poole High School basketball team, died suddenly at his home at Tilden at 9:15 a.m. Monday. Death was attributed to a heart attack. The youth, a sophomore in the Poole school, had played in a basketball game against Providence Friday night and registered the first three goals for his team. Coach H.R. MARKS said that Donald Lee stated he felt fine prior to and after the game. Coach Marks stated the youth was one of the most valuable members of the team and had been a regular member this year after seeing some service last year. He trained faithfully and was very popular among the student body. Members of the Poole team are purchasing another uniform similar to the one worn by Donald Lee with his number "25" on it which will be placed in the school's trophy case. The numerals "25" will not be used by the Poole team in the future. Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Pinkston; a sister, Judy, at home; a half-sister, Mrs. James REYNOLDS, Dixon; half-brother, Bob Ed METZ, Dixon; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.V. Pinkston, Dixon; grandfather, R.A. TAPP, Dixon, and great-grandfather, R.L. Tapp, Dixon. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Missionary Baptist church in Poole, with the Rev. Wilbur COLLINS officiating. Burial was in Shady Grove cemetery, Poole.

Mrs. Vera PINKSTON, 52, former Webster county resident, died Tuesday morning at her home in Corydon. Survivors are the husband, Noah; four daughters, Mrs. William NOE of Greenfield, Iowa, Mrs. Joe L. WHITMORE of Corydon, Mrs. Curtis STONE of Henderson, and Mrs. R.L. BUMPUS of Bradford, Pa; five sons, Capt. N.T. Pinkston, Cherry Point, N.C., Iloff, at home, Charles and James Albert of Providence, and Cpl. Eugene Pinkston, Casablanca, Africa; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Iloff and Thomas BUCHANAN, Morganfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Methodist church in Corydon, with the Rev. L.O. SULLIVANT officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont cemetery, Henderson.
