Grant County Newspaper Abstracts 1893

Williamstown Courier
Excerpts from Grant County KY. Newspapers Abstracts Volume I Part III,
Compiled by Robert L. Bickers
Published by the Grant Co. Historical Society
Transcribed with permission of Robert L. Bickers, thanks Bob!

"In some instances the wording of an article was so amusing and quaint (to us today, not to them, of course) I have used quotes to abstract the "flavor". I have abstracted some "general interest item" to give a historical perspective of Grant county and the times nearly a century ago. These entries give us an insight to the problems and enjoyments of their times, such as dusty and muddy streets, the beginning of baseball teams, blackberry cobblers, toll roads, free one-room schools, droughts, Eagle Creek floods, one-sided Democratic domination in politics, rampant and deadly diseases (such as cholera, consumption, and brain fever), "king" tobacco, and so forth.

The role of the local or county newspaper was pivotal then in forming public opinion. The publishers, Westover and Points, strong, direct, and uncompromising. While they could be generous and complimentary, they did not fear to speak out about drunks, dogs, unsafe water, juries that would not convict the guilty, or youthful rascals that interrupted religious meetings. Republicans were few in number and seldom merited a good word from their columns.

Besides looking for your own ancestors, please take the time to read every entry. There is a continuity from start to finish which says, "These are my people. These are their friends. These are the circumstances they faced in raising their families." I hope you will find the ancestors for whom you are looking."
Robert L. Bickers, as written in Grant County KY. Newspapers Abstracts Volume I Part II, Compiled by Robert L. Bickers.

NOTE: The paper was published on Thursdays; Numerical Dates may be calculated from that date, Mr. Bickers also notes that the spelling, including surnames is as it was printed.

EDITOR'S NOTES
Grant County was organized into a county in 1820, just 73 years ago. Very few people in the county now can remember that time. Nearly the entire county was at [that] time covered with a virgin forest of the finest timber to be found on the continent. The timber which stood in the county at that early day would, if preserved until now, be worth more than all the land in the county. The walnut alone, much of which was wantonly destroyed, would in this day bring a fabulous sum of money.

Grant County is the hardest county in the district in which to secure a conviction for a crime of any kind.
