STRAY STOCK

Transcribed by Bonnie Snow

Note: The value of this data is the fact that it lists the places where our early Kentucky ancestors settled. Few fences existed and therefore stock would stray from the property of the owners, this led the owners to brand their animals. Early settlers in Kentucky were required to have stray stock recorded and appraised when they were acquired by individuals. The following is from Pendleton County records but are valuable to many Grant County researchers because the appraisals were made prior to Grant becoming a county. I have listed only two appraisal reports as they aren't of genealogical value but I thought the viewer might want to see the value of stock during the era, also note that many appraisal amounts were in British pounds instead of American dollars. Another note, Grassy Creek meanders through Pendleton and Grant Counties.
PLEASE: Check the names carefully, I tried to transcribe them as they were written but I see many names I recognize and the spelling is not correct.
