The Riley Family of Pendleton County Kentucky

By Linda Kaye (Cope) Lanier

My gg-grandmother, Nancy Jane Riley, was born in Kenton County, KY but moved to Pendleton County, KY with her parents when she was a very small child and she lived there for the next 40 years.  Her father, Alfred Riley, was the son of John Riley and Frances Wayman.  The Riley and Wayman families moved to Kentucky before 1800 and settled on Banklick Creek in Campbell Co. KY.  When Kenton County was formed in 1840, the Riley Farm was located in the new county. Many descendants of the Riley and Wayman families lived in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell Counties, but Alfred decided to move his family south into Pendleton County.  The follow is a history of the descendants of Alfred Riley and his wife, Rachel Wiggins.

First Generation

1. Alfred E. RILEY. Born on 29 Mar 1807 in Campbell Co. KY. Alfred E. died in Pendleton Co Ky on 15 Jan 1877, he was 69. Buried in Short Creek Cemetery, State Route 22, near Short Creek Baptist Church. Occupation: Magistrate in Pendleton Co KY. Religion: Member of Short Creek Baptist Church. On 2 Jan 1833 when Alfred E. was 25, he married Rachel WIGGINS, daughter of WIGGINS, in Campbell Co. KY. Born on 7 Jan 1811 in Ohio. Rachel died in Pendleton Co Ky on 13 Jul 1890, she was 79. Buried in Short Creek Cemetery, State Route 22, near Short Creek Baptist Church. They had the following children:

      2      i.      Nancy Jane (1835-1903)

      3     ii.      Ann (1837->1880)

      4    iii.      Frances (1839-)

      5     iv.      James T. (1841-~1934)

      6      v.      Mary Isobell (1842-1912)

      7     vi.      Alford E. "Doc" (1847-1892)

      8    vii.      John F. (~1852-)

The correct spelling for Alfred/Alford is not known.  On many records it is Alfred; however, on his tombstone it is Alford.

Alfred is listed on the 1840 Kenton County, Kentucky Census; however, he did not move from Campbell County to Kenton County, but rather Kenton County was created in 1840 from part of Campbell County and the land upon which they lived was in that part of Campbell County that became Kenton County.  The Riley farm was located on a big bend in Banklick Creek that is presently located along Highway 17 south of the town of Maurice in Kenton County.  Alford is listed on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Pendleton County, Kentucky Federal Census Records.  On the 1860 Census, he is listed as living in Callinsville.  On the 1870 Census, he is listed as living in Elizabethtown.

In 1836, Alford purchased 500 acres of land in Pendleton County, Kentucky located "upon the waters of Main Short Creek" and was his "to have and to hold from the 9th day of April, 1836, for fifty years."  Papers were delivered to James and Elizabeth Winaus, tenants in possession of the property October 17, 1836. This property was the subject of a law suit filed in Pendleton County after the death of Alford Riley, as to the lawful owners of the property.  It seems that, even though Alford purchased the property in 1836, he didn't move his family from Kenton County to Pendleton County until a few years later, and at that time he purchased another piece of property, and it was on the second piece of property where he and Rachel lived .

Depositions filed in Pendleton County Court in 1878 by Rachel Riley and her son, John F. Riley indicate that they were trying to take possession of the land that had been in the hands of several different families over a period of many years.  It is assumed that the family was trying to clear up the estate of Alford who had died the previous year.  An amusing story was told in the deposition of Agnes Roberts who stated that Alford and Rachel lived on a property they purchased from her father about 40 years previously.  It was located about 1 1/2 to 2 miles from the disputed property.  She said that Rachel had told her that she thought that the other property they had purchased was "haunted" and that she wouldn't live there if they would make her a present of the place.

Alford and Rachel's first child, Nancy Jane, was born in Campbell County but the rest of the children were born in Pendleton County.  According to statements in the Barton Papers, Alford served as a magistrate in Pendleton County.  Alford and Rachel and their children were active members of the Short Creek Baptist Church in Pendleton County.  According to records  recorded in the minutes of the church, Alford was the third ordained deacon of the church.  He also served as church clerk for 25 years.  His death is recorded in the minutes of the church when it is stated that "Bro. Alford Riley died and Bro. J. W. Moore was elected to succeed him as church clerk."  Rileys who are listed in the church records as past members of the church include Alford, Rachel, Nancy, Ann, Frances, Lucy, Mary, James, Ollie, Lee, and John.

Alfred's farm of about 240 acres was divided in 1877 between his widow, Rachel, and his children.  This land was held under deeds from Jacob Riley as recorded in Pendleton County Deed Book I, p. 135, and George W. Summers as recorded in Pendleton County Deed Book Q, p. 421.  The estate was appraised Feb. 15, 1877.  Property set apart to Rachel Riley, Widow, included housegoods, 22 cuts of spun yarn, 28 yards rag carpet, the family Bible, loom, wheel, and cards, 2 mares, 2 cows, a plow, gear, and c., and provisions, all valued at $333.20.  She also was given a dower's  share of Alfred's 240 acres of land which was 63 1/2 acres.  Her share of the property was bounded on the north by lands of J.T. Lummis, J.S. Wadsworth, and N. Davis; on the east by the lands of N.B. Chipman, T.M. Arnold, and William Uere; on the south by T.S. Highfill; and on the west by ? Porter.

Property for distribution included house goods, 6 picture frames, old shot gun, broad axe, adz, drawing knife, carpenter's planes, washing machine, cane mill, side hill plow, 2-horse spring wagon, cutting box, hogs, lot of tobacco 5000 lbs at 5 cts. lb.  Also, a note on Amos M. Combs for $60.81, a note on Lewis Lovelace for $13.75, and 4 shares stock in Falmouth Cooperation Store for $20.00.  A sale was held Feb. 16, 1877.  Rachel purchased most that was sold.  Family members purchased the following:  Jesse L. McKinley purchased 1 stand bees and 2 wheels and reel, Ann Porter purchased molasses and pork, A. E. Riley purchased 1 stand bees, James Riley purchased 1 stand bees and a wheat fan, John Riley purchased the hill side plow, and Thos. Green purchased pork.  Other property was purchased by the following neighbors:  Wm. Moore purchased 10 hogs and a corn planter, Fred Shite purchased 1 stand bees, James Carr purchased chisels and a cross cut saw, John Fornash purchased a plow, T. M. Arnold purchased a sledge hammer, John L. Wadsworth purchased counter scales, Charles Marquet purchased a pruning hook, Wm. Johns purchased a grubbing hoe, Robert McMullin purchased 2 hackels, J. D. Polly purchased 4 planes, E. M. Halpin purchased a grind stone, Joseph Gulick purchased a set of harrow teeth, E. A. Arnold purchased a sow and 3 pigs, and Henry Wadsworth purchased a clothes wringer.

After Rachel's death, her dower of 63 1/2 acres of land, located at Goforth, was divided in 1891 in Pendleton County Court.

Nancy Jane moved with her husband and children from Pendleton County to Menifee Co. Riley.

In Menifee County, Jane and George became active members of the Laurel Springs Baptist Church.  The three people who attended the Greenville Association representing Laurel Springs Baptist Church in 1903 were G.W. Egelston (George), Wm. Gipson (William Gibson), and W.E. Daugherty.  Nancy Jane's death is reported in the Greenville Association Minutes of the Baptist Church in 1903.  It reads as follows: "Laurel Springs reports one death, Sister Jane Egelston, Aug. 27.  She was a devoted Christian and our church has sustained a great loss.  We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.  Our loss is her gain."

3. Ann RILEY. Born in 1837 in Pendleton Co Ky. Ann died  aft 1880, she was 43. On 10 Apr 1866 when Ann was 29, she married James Braxton PORTER, son of Andrew PORTER & Mary B. POLLARD, in Pendleton Co KY. Born  abt 1818. They had the following children:

James Braxton Porter's marriage to Ann Riley was his fourth marriage.  According to the Barton Papers, James fell from a huckster wagon and broke his back about 1878, and he lived several years as an invalid.  He was referred to as "broken-back Jim" at times to distinguish him from another James Porter. This information is recorded in the Barton Papers and was given to Barton  on 16 Feb 1937 by Mrs. Lula Shipp, daughter of Ida Porter Brann, and granddaughter of James Porter.  Barton says James lived near the church at Goforth (Short Creek Baptist Church).  The Barton Papers also reveal that on 7  Nov 1878 that Wm. Gullick made a report to the Pendleton County Court on how he had spent $25 given him for the benefit of James B. Porter and family.  The sum was spent on essential food and clothing supplies.  James and Ann are listed on the 1870 and 1880 Pendleton County Federal Census records.  On the 1880 Census, it states that James had a broken back and was living in the Short Creek district.   According to Valerie Phillips Gildehaus, gg granddaughter of Braxton Carter Porter, a brother of James B. Porter, James Porter had three children by previous marriages before marrying Ann Riley.  They were Sarah Jane Porter, b. 1844; Mary L. Porter, b. 1855; and Charles E. Porter, b. 1861.

Ann and James inherited a portion of her father's property in a division of Alfred

Riley's land in 1977.  According to the Barton Papers, they sold their share of the inheritance to her brother, John F. Riley.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Civil War, serving in the Confederate Army.    He enlisted 15 Sep 1862 in Pendleton County Kentucky in D Co., 4th Cav. Reg. James inherited a portion of his father's 240 acres of land in a division of Alfred Riley's property in 1877.  According to information in the Barton Papers, he sold his share of the inheritance to N.B. Chipman in 1879.  This is recorded in Pendleton

County, KY Deed Book 3B, page 106.  According to Olema Hudspeth, her father, Russell Hale, nephew of James, once told her that his "Uncle Jim" said he put the money from the sale of his inheritance in the bank and told the banker that the money was to be used to bury him."

A Memo in the Barton Papers dated 11 Apr 1870 by A. Riley, Guardian for Sarah J. Egelston (his granddaughter) stating that 'nothing has come to his hands except the possession of about 15 acres of land about Sept 1869.'  Another memo dated 18 May 1872 by Alfred Riley Gdn. for Sarah J. Eggleston states ' His ward has no property except 15 acres of land inherited from her grandfather Eggleston.  Asa Eggleston now has it in possession and Gdn will collect a reasonable rent.'

I have been told that Sarah and Thomas had other children, but these Ida and Lessley  are the only names that I have found. Thomas and Sarah are listed on the 1880 Pendleton County, Kentucky Census with their daughter Ida. Sarah and Thomas evidently moved to Menifee County when her mother and stepfather did, as she was living there when she died. Sarah and Thomas’s son. Lessley, is listed on the 1900 Menifee Co.
