The Riddle Family of Pendleton County Kentucky

My ggg-grandmother was Julia Ann Riddle, daughter of Robert Riddle and Mary Ann Southard.  Julia Ann was still living in Pendleton County in 1880 and the location of her home is marked on the 1880 Pendleton County map.  It is west of Elizabethville P.O. on present-day Highway 22.  The Riddle family was living in Pendleton County shortly after 1800.  Julia Ann’s father married his first wife in Pendleton County in 1802.  The following is a history of the Riddle family.

First Generation

1. George RIDDLE. Born  abt 1750 in Scotland. George died in Pendleton Co. KY  abt 1854, he was 104.

Information on the Riddle Family was gleaned from many sources. Research by this writer and her sister, Cheryl Cope Lipe was done in the Pendleton Co. KY  Courthouse and the County Library where a Riddle Family file was found.  Additional information was provided by Nancy Criswell, a descendant of Charles Riddle and Malvina Roberts, which included the Barton Papers on the Riddles, and many marriage, death, and birth records from Pendleton Co. KY; Woody Eggleston, also a descendant of Charles Riddle and Malvina Roberts, who provided his family history data; and Susan M. Riddle, whose husband is a descendant of George Drummond Riddle and Elmina Varnier.  Other sources include Campbell Co. KY marriage records, "The History of Lee County, Iowa" which had biographies on Ebenezer Riddle (son of Robert Riddle and Hettie Buckley) and his son Robert T. Riddle, the Pendleton Co. KY site on Rootsweb, and many census records online at Ancestry.com.

George's name is recorded in "The History of Lee County, Iowa" published by Western Historical Co. Chicago, 1879.  This book contains biographies of early settlers, one of whom was Ebenezer Riddle, grandson of George Riddle.  The following information appeared in the biography of Ebenezer who was a resident of Denmark, Lee Co. Iowa at that time:  "His grandfather Riddle was a native of Scotland where he was married and then emigrated to America, and was one of the first settlers of Kentucky.  He served in the Revolution, for which service he was granted a large tract of land in Pendleton Co. KY.  He carried a bullet in the back of his neck for the remainder of his life as his service in the war.  He died in 1816 at the advanced age of 104 years and 3 months, leaving 4 sons and 2 daughters.  An early day spelling of his name was RIDDELL.  His name is recorded in the Pendleton Co. KY Deed Records as having owned 2 farms on Harris Creek jointly with his son-in-law, Alexander Caldwell.

Family of George RIDDLE (1) & Unknown [RIDDLE]

2. Robert RIDDLE. Born  abt 1764 in PA. Robert died in Pendleton Co. KY  abt 1820, he was 56. On 2 Jul 1802 when Robert was 38, he first married Ann "Nancy" LIGHTFOOT, in Pendleton Co. KY. Born  abt 1777 in Culpeper Co. VA. Ann "Nancy" died in Fleming Co. KY in Jun 1857, she was 80.  They had one child:

About 1808 when Robert was 44, he second married Hettie BUCKLEY, in Near Nashville, Davidson Co. TN.  They had the following children:

On 16 Jun 1814 when Robert was 50, he third married Mary Ann SOUTHARD, daughter of Laurence SOUTHARD, in Pendleton Co. KY. Born  abt 1784. Mary Ann died  abt 1823, she was 39.  They had the following children:

Robert's name appears several times in the Pendleton Co. KY Court Records: 

(1) March 10, 1809, Joseph Merrill filed suit against John Webb and Robert Riddell for payment on a note valued at seven pounds and three pence current money which was dated December 22, 1807. John Webb answered the summons to appear in court on March 24, 1809, but Robert Riddel was not found.

(2)Pendleton Co. Delinquent Tax List for 1807-1809, Robert's name appears on this list.  Also listed is the information that he had gone to Tennessee.  This is confirmed by the following information:  "Robert Riddle's  marriage to Hettie Buckley is mentioned in "The History of Lee County, Iowa" published by Western Historical Company, Chicago, 1879, page 874.   The information is recorded in a biography of their son, Ebenezer, who was living in Denmark, Iowa in the late 1870s.  He said he was the eldest son and second child of Robert and Hettie and his parents moved to Pendleton Co. KY when he was a baby.  He said his mother died in KY  soon after the move and that his father remarried."  It would appear from this information that Robert divorced his first wife and left the state, moving to TN for a period of about three years, during which time he married for a second time, returning to Pendleton Co. about 1811.  After the death of his second wife, he married again for the third time.

3. John RIDDLE. Born on 21 Dec 1777 in PA. John died in Adams Co. IL on 31 Jan 1836, he was 58. On 2 Nov 1815 when John was 37, he first married Elizabeth WHEELER, in Pendleton Co. KY. Elizabeth died  abt 1824 in Pendleton Co. KY.  They had the following children:

On 2 Dec 1824 when John was 46, he second married Mary "Polly" HIGHTOWER, in Campbell Co. KY. Born on 3 Sep 1797 in VA. Mary "Polly" died on 8 Aug 1878, she was 80.  They had the following children:

John's name is found in the Pendleton Co. KY Court Records where he served on a jury September 25, 1827.  The date of John's death is confirmed by Pendleton Co. Court Records.  Found in a file box in the Courty Courthouse is the following:  Order Book 1830-1836, page 338, Amt. of money left in my hands at the death of John Riddle on the 31st of January, 1836; In Kentucky Bank Paper-$5.00; In Specie-$6.93 3/4; Some old clothes such as Coat Pantaloons.  (Dated) 1st Feby. 1836  (Signed) E. Daniel, Curator of Riddle.

4. Elizabeth "Betsey" RIDDLE. Born  abt 1779 in PA. Elizabeth "Betsey" died in Campbell Co. KY on 18 Aug 1823, she was 44.  On 23 Sep 1797 when Elizabeth "Betsey" was 18, she married Alexander CALDWELL, in Campbell Co. KY.

5. Ann "Polly" RIDDLE. Born  abt 1782 in PA. Ann "Polly" died in Pendleton Co. KY  abt 1801, she was 19.  On 22 Jan 1800 when Ann "Polly" was 18, she married Steven Douglas Decatur MULLINS, in Pendleton Co. KY.

6. George RIDDLE Jr. Born  abt 1786 in PA. George died in Adams Co. IL on 12 May 1859, he was 73.  George married Margaret COLVIN. Born  abt 1788 in VA. Margaret died in Adams Co. IL on 12 Apr 1852, she was 64.  They had the following children:

7. Ebenzer RIDDLE. Born  abt 1787. Ebenzer died in Adams Co. IL on 22 Feb 1844, he was 57.  On 19 Aug 1814 when Ebenzer was 27, he first married Elizabeth WILLIAMS, in Pendleton Co. KY. Elizabeth died  abt 1825 in Pendleton Co. KY.  They had the following children:

8. Coleman RIDDLE. Born on 10 Aug 1801 in KY. On 30 Mar 1820 when Coleman was 18, he first married Sarah Anne "Sally" McGuire PLUMMER, in Fleming Co. KY. Born in 1802 in Dry Ridge, Grant Co. KY. Sarah Anne "Sally" McGuire died in Rush, Buchanan Co. MO in 1851, she was 49.  They had the following children:

Coleman second married Mrs. Nancy CAYTON. Born in 1802 in SC. Nancy died in 1864, she was 62.  On 23 Sep 1868 when Coleman was 67, he third married Rebecca GOLDEN, in Bates Co. MO. Born in 1802 in KY.

Coleman and Sarah purchased land near Mt. Carmel, Fleming Co. KY in 1823.  They moved to Lewis Co. KY about 1827-1830 and purchased property there.  On May 16, 1850, they sold their home and moved west to Missouri where they settled on a farm near Rushville, Rush Township, Buchanan Co. MO.Coleman is listed on the 1850 Buchanan Co. MO Censusin household # 451, living with his wife Sarah and five of their six children.  Only the eldest child, Elizabeth is not listed, but she was already married.  He is listed on the 1860 Buchanan Co. MO Census living at Rush in household #281 with his second wife, Nancy, and stepdaughter, Roena Katon, age 18.  Living in household #280 is his son Robert with his family.  He is listed on the 1870 Bates Co. MO Census living in household # in Boone Township with his third wife, Rebecca and three minor children:  Billy Riddle age 19, Jane Riddle age 9, and James Presley age 1 1/2 , all born in MO.

10. Ebenzer RIDDLE. Born in 1810 in Near Nashville, Davidson Co. TN. About 1832 when Ebenzer was 22, he first married Jane HILLERY, in Adams Co. IL. Born in VA. Jane died in 1839 in Des Moines Co. IA.  They had the following children:

In 1840 when Ebenzer was 30, he second married Susan SWANK, daughter of John SWANK, in Des Moines Co. IA. Born in Nov 1803 in Shelby Co. KY.  Susan was a widow when she married Ebenezer.  They had the following children:

A biography about the life of Ebenezer is recorded in "The History of Lee County, Iowa", published by Western Historical Company, Chicago, 1879, pages 873-874.    He was a resident of Denmark, Lee Co. Iowa in the 1870s.  This biography is a good source of information about Ebenezer as well as providing valuable historical information about his father, Robert, and grandfather, George.  Ebenezer said he was born near Nashville, TN, moved to Pendleton Co. KY with his parents when he was an infant, and that in 1828 he left KY along with his three uncles, John, George, and Ebenezer Riddle and moved Quincy, Adams Co. IL, where he purchased and improved a farm of 100 acres.  It was there that he married and began raising a family.  In 1835, he and his family became pioneers in Des Moines Co. Iowa where they built a cabin about two miles from what is now the center of Burlington, Iowa.  After his first wife died he married again. They remained in Des Moines Co. until 1876 when they moved to Denmark, Lee County, IA.  His new farm of 284 acres was purchased from  Rev. Asa Turner who had received the land as a patent from President John Tyler.

12. Julia Ann RIDDLE. Born in 1814 in Kentucky. Julia Ann died in Pendleton Co. KY  aft 1879, she was 65. On 6 Feb 1834 when Julia Ann was 20, she married Willis LOVELACE, son of Hazel LOVELACE (31 Mar 1790-29 Jan 1844) & Mary "Polly" Ann SWINFORD (abt 1785-Apr 1843), in Falmouth, Pendleton Co KY. Born in 1811 in Harrison Co. KY. Willis died in Harrison Co. KY  abt 1874, he was 63. Buried in On his farm in Pendleton Co. KY. They had the following children:

April 7, 1879, Pendleton Co. KY Court.  Julia's name appears in court records in conjunction with her two sons, A.J. Lovelace and Nicholas Lovelace, which show that they sold land for $1.00 to Samuel M.C. Blackburn, Joseph Gulick, and Albert Carter, Trustees for School District #5 for School purposes.  The land was located on the Warsaw Road about 6 miles from Falmouth on the north side of the road and joining land of Blackburn and Lovelace.  (Signed) N. 13. Charles RIDDLE. Born in 1818 in Pendleton Co KY. Charles died in Bellefontaine, Logan Co. OH  abt 1900, he was 82. On 1 Jan 1844 when Charles was 26, he first married Malvina ROBERTS, daughter of William ROBERTS (1808-21 Aug 1859) & Harriet HOWLETT (1807-aft 1870), in Pendleton Co Ky. Born in 1827. Malvina died in Pendleton Co. KY  bef 1870, she was 43.  They had the following children:

On 12 Jan 1848 when Elizabeth was 25, she married Lewis LOVELACE, son of Hazel LOVELACE (31 Mar 1790-29 Jan 1844) & Mary "Polly" Ann SWINFORD (abt 1785-Apr 1843), in Pendleton Co. KY. Born in 1825 in Pendleton Co. KY.  They had the following children:

George Hightower died in Los Angeles, CA on 28 Jan 1904, he was 86.

16. Catharine Wheeler RIDDLE. Born on 30 Oct 1819 in Pendleton Co. KY. Catharine Wheeler died in Omaha, NE on 10 Dec 1908, she was 89.  On 11 Apr 1839 when Catharine Wheeler was 19, she married John V. CLEAVELAND, Jr., in Adams Co. IL. Born on 19 Sep 1816 in Boston, MA. John V. died in St. Louis, MO on 14 May 1874, he was 57.

17. George "Drummond" RIDDLE. Born on 2 Jan 1822 in Pendleton Co. KY. George "Drummond" died in Adams Co. IL on 29 Sep 1875, he was 53.  George "Drummond" married Elmira VARNIER. Born on 6 Nov  in Gallatin Co. IL. Elmira died on 4 Oct 1917 in Adams Co. IL.

Born  abt 1827 in KY.  About 1894 when John Hightower was 68, he second married Mrs. Rosa D. RAND. Born in Jun 1848 in ME.

19. Frances RIDDLE. Born on 12 Mar 1828 in KY. Frances died in CA on 22 Feb 1913, she was 84.  On 30 Oct 1848 when Frances was 20, she first married John McLAUGHLIN, in Adams Co. IL. John died on 21 Sep 1861 in Lexington, MO. On 5 Dec 1863 when Frances was 35, she second married James G. BIRCHIM, in Hicksville, CA. Born  abt 1826 in IN. James G. died in Round Valley, Inyo Co. CA on 1 Sep 1902, he was 76.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Civil War and died in service.

A biography of Robert is printed in "The History of Lee County, Iowa" published by Western Historical Society, Chicago, 1879. Robert said he was born in Adams Co. IL and moved with his parents to Des Moines Co. IA when he was 18 months old.  He married Ruth Walker, daughter of Henry Walker, one of the first settlers in Des Moines Co.  The marriage ceremony took place on the same farm where she was born, and Robert and Ruth continued to live on that same farm for the next 13 years. In 1869, they sold the farm and moved to Danville Township where they purchased 207 acres.  In 1878, they purchased an additional 336 acres of land in Denmark, Lee Co. IA and moved to their new farm.  The biographer described Robert as an "extensive farmer and stock-grower."

130. Mollie Mae McMILLIN. Born on 31 Oct 1875 in Pendleton Co. KY. Mollie Mae died in Springfield, OH on 15 Aug 1968, she was 92.  Mollie Mae married John Henry LUDWIG, son of Eliazbeth [LUDWIG] (abt 1838-). Born  abt 1874 in OH. John Henry died in OH in 1929, he was 55.

131. Clara McMILLIN. Born on 20 Feb 1877. Clara died on 9 Sep 1972, she was 95.  Before 1899 when Clara was 21, she first married Unknown REED.  They had the following children:

After 1911 when Clara was 33, she second married Patrick DEE, in OH. Born on 24 Sep 1862 in Beaver Falls, PA. Patrick died in OH  bef 1930, he was 67.

OH on 22 Aug 1962, she was 85.  On 19 Jun 1893 when Carrie Ellen was 16, she married George Benjamin CLAGG, in Hardin Co. OH. Born on 12 Dec 1865. George Benjamin died in Bellefontaine, Logan Co. OH on 11 Nov 1947, he was 81. Buried in Bellefontaine, Logan Co. OH.  They had the following children:

Alfred and Lizzie lived at Bellefontaine, Logan Co. OH.  An email from Olema Hudspeth, dated 19 Feb 2003, stated that she had a letter written by Alfred Eaggleston, son of Robert Eggleston, and grandson of Alford Egelston, that says, "When Alfred died there were 6 children, 3 in diapers.  Robert, my father stayed home to help deliver laundry that his mother, Lizzie, did trying to make ends meet.  He (Robert) died in 1935."
