Brief History of Morgan High School
Submitted by Nancy Bray, thanks Nancy!

The class of 1920, composed of two members, was the first and smallest graduating class of Morgan High School.

From 1920 to 1928 there was only a three year High School at Morgan, and pupils wishing to graduate, had to complete their studies at Falmouth or elsewhere. Among the best known of those from the Morgan community who did this were Roscoe Ewing, Robert Thompson, Oral Lowe, Margaret Hand Wilson, Ruby Douglas Meyers, and Katherina Antrobus.

In 1928, Mr. Charles S. Brown came to Morgan as principal and through his leadership Morgan added the fourth year of High School and had a graduating class in 1929 composed of four members.

In 1930, the Morgan Graded and High School became a part of the Pendleton County School System. Previous to this Morgan was an Independent School.

There were 5 in the class of 1930, 7 in 1931, 6 in 1932, and since that time there was never less than 12 in a graduating class. The largest class, in 1941, boasted a total of 31 members.

There are a total of 597 graduates of Morgan High School.

Thirty-seven graduates married graduates of Morgan.

We have lost at least 47 of our 597 graduates by death.

At least 75 of Morgan's graduates served in World War ll. John Montgomery, class of 1936, and James Gifford, class of 1940, were killed while in Service.

Ten of our boys who had not completed their High School did so while in Military Service and received their diplomas from Morgan. They are Tommy Beagle, Ralph Browning, James Conrad, Earnest M. King, Harvey King, Johnny Lawson, Billy McCandless (deceased), Ralph Melvin Scott, Joe Spalding, Bobby R. Walden.

Morgan's graduates have entered various professions and occupations--we have had at least 60 teachers, some nurses, merchants, principals, a minister, lawyer, farmers, housewives, secretaries, etc.

In 1939, Morgan had its first lunch room with Mrs. Hazel Godman as manager.

Until 1947 Home Economics had not been offered. At that time, the County School Board purchased the old Baptist Church building in Morgan to use as the Home Ec. Building.

Graduates are now living in at least 18 states and in some foreign countries.

Principals at Morgan High School were D. H. Norris, a Mr. Ryle, Charles S. Brown, James R. Welch, Forest Thompson, Wilford Lancaster, C.G. Lamb, Preston Laster, Palmore Lyles, Calvin Walker, and Richard Gulick.

Morgan's first Alumni meeting was in 1935. At that time Morgan had 53 graduates and 35 were present. The next attempt to get Morgan Alumni organized was in 1951. Since 1951, banquets or picnics were held annually for a few years, then semi-annually in even numbered years.

Morgan High School's last graduating class was the class of 1959. Then Morgan and Butler were consolidated to form Pendleton High School.
