The Klaber Family of Pendleton County Kentucky

By Linda Kaye (Cope) Lanier

My grandmother, Abba Frances (Klaber) Cope is a descendant of the Klaber family of Pendleton County, Kentucky.  Her grandparents, Jacob and Elisabetha (Hettisheimer) Klaber came to America from Germany in 1853 and settled in Pendleton County in 1856 where her father, Jacob Klaber, Jr. was born.  The two story log house built by Jacob Klaber is still standing and is located on the farm of Omer Bentle on Highway 22.  Mr. Bentle has generously allowed the Klaber descendants to visit his farm and walk through the building and its surroundings.

KY in July, 1860.  In 1868 he purchased a 43 acre farm about three miles north of Falmouth, Pendleton Co. KY in an area referred to as Moduc.  They first built a two story log house that is still standing on the old Klaber farm.  They later built a two story frame house up on the ridge.  It was there that Jacob and Elisabetha lived the remainder of their lives, raising 12 children.  Jacob worked hard farming his own land and also working for others, doing farm work, logging, splitting logs and building rail fences.  During the Civil war he broke and trained mules for the Union Army.  Jacob and Elizabetha's deaths are both recorded in the church records of St. Francis Xavier Church.

OK in 1930 and the family lived there for the next 23 years.  In 1953, Shelby and Abbie sold the farm and bought an historic, two-story house on the west edge of Tecumseh and a small farm near Harjo, located SW of Tecumseh. In 1971 they built a new house on the Harjo farm, sold the house in Tecumseh, and moved back to the country.  Shelby died less than a year later, and Abbie continued to live on the Harjo farm until she suffered  a stroke in 1974.  She spent the last five years of her life in the Colonial Estates Nursing Home in Shawnee, OK.

Godfrey and his wife were two of the four persons killed when a tornado struck their farm located  a mile west of Falmouth on April 23, 1968.  The following article appeared in the Kentucky Post on April 25, 1968:

A CHICK LIVED...IN MIDST OF DEATH by Bob Fogarty, Falmouth, Ky

A tiny live chick in the midst of wreckage that claimed two lives...a house trailer on Main street that exists only in debris now...a sobbing father.  These told the story Wednesday of the four deaths claimed by Falmouth's killer tornado that struck at 1:50 P.M. the day before.  And too two small children and a farm couple while miraculously sparing others.  Godfrey and Catherine Klaber, Sr., both 66, lived in a neat farmhouse about a mile west of Falmouth on Ky. 318.  They raised chickens, grew tobacco, and saved mementoes of a bygone day, such as wagon and iron-rimmed wheels in a nearby shed.  Perhaps 100 yards from their home lived Klaber's brother, William, an infalid, and his wife, in a sturdy, double-walled log house.  "The tornado came over that hill after knocking down a couple of barns and breaking trees." pointed out Elbert Klaber, cousin of the dead man and a farmer on Rt. 5.  Then the giant vacuum cleaner struck the Klaber home.  It tore it from its concrete block foundations, sending wreckage, furniture, appliances spinning over a nearby hillside.  "Someone found the bathtub in a field a quarter-mile away."  Klaber continued quietly.  He poked through the rubbish of what once was a well-equipped home.  A television set was a mass of barely recognizable electronic parts.  Chickens leaped atop splintered timbers and pecked at bits of grain.  Dead, mutilated chicks had been hurled into the mud.  But in the middle huddled one tiny chick, still living.  "He's too far gone," said Klaber gently.  He said there wasn't much chance to salvage the couple's belongings.  The roof of the nearby log cabin had gone into the wind, but the walls remained, a testimony to the sturdiness of the double log rows filled with limestone.  They'd saved the occupants.  Joint funeral services for the Klabers will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Woodhead & Son Funeral Home, Falmouth.  Both were natives and lifelong residents of Falmouth and members of Falmouth Christian Church.  Their survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ida C. Aulick, Falmouth, and one son, Godfrey Jr., West Chester, Ohio.  Also, Mr. Klaber's two sisters, Miss Ida Klaber, Falmouth, and Miss Anna Klaber, Milford, Ohio, and two brothers, William and Frank, both of Falmouth.  Mrs. Klaber leaves also one sister, Mrs. Lilly Race, Cincinnati.  The couple also had six grandchildren.

The following article about Florence appeared in the "Falmouth Outlook" in 2004: "Florence Wolfe will turn 100-years old on February 17; still quite active” by Roger McKinney, Reporter

In 1904 two Pendleton County farmers, Pearl and William Klaber, had a baby girl.  They named her Florence.  The Klaber family eventually came to include six children:  Florence, Willie, Albert, Charlie, Frances, and Katherine.  Florence has one surviving sibling, her sister Frances Auchter, who lives in Butler.  Florence attended Grassy Creek School from 1910 to 1913.  She graduated from Lightfoot Fork School in 1918.  Florence Klaber married homer Wolfe in 1926.  She and Homer had four children:  Ivan, Geneva, Juanita, and Marilyn.  Florence and her husband made their living as dairy/beef and tobacco farmers.  Today, Mrs. Wolfe has nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.  Falmouth resident, Bill Klaber, is Mrs. Wolfe's nephew, the son of her brother Charlie.  Musician Matt Sorrell is Florence's grandchild, the son of her daughter Geneva.  At 99 years of age Mrs. Wolfe is physically and mentally active.  She walks the halls of the nursing home twice per day for exercise.  Florence reads the Bible.  She especially likes the beautiful poetry of the Book of Psalms.  Mrs. Wolfe also enjoys flowers, sewing, playing Bingo, and Match Card.  Some of Mrs. Wolfe's favorite memories go back to the time when, as a child, she monitored nesting turkeys for her mother and father.  (They wanted to know when the eggs hatched); a traveling peddler or huckster visited the farm.  He brought a little grocery store in his truck.  The huckster Florence recalls was a man named Charlie Kemp; she spelled down the McKinley brothers as a fourth grader at Lightfoot Fork School.  (The McKinley brothers were seventh and eighth graders.); she first saw Ella Swetnam.  Ms. Swetnam was  Lightfoot Fork schoolteacher.  She impressed Florence as beautiful and sophisticated.  (Ella Swetnam was the first woman Florence knew that wore makeup and high heels.); she met her husband to be at Turner Ridge Baptist Church in 1922.  (They were to wed four years later.)  Mrs. Wolfe attributes her long life to clean living, church going, and the long walks she took with her husband.  Florence will be 100 years old on February 17.  River Valley Nursing Home invites everyone to stop by and wish Mrs. Wolfe a happy birthday.  Florence says she wants the celebration to be friendly, not fancy.
