"Whereas a report has gotten into circulation that we, William Childres,
and Henry P. Childres should have reported that John P. Theobald and Prier
Theobald had attempted to rob a man who had put up at James Masterson's in Grant
County in October, 1822...now we the undersigned do certify that although a
certain David Adams stated to us that the said Theobalds did attempt to rob him
at said Masterson's, that we told said Adams that we did not believe it, that he
was in error, and stated to said Adams that he had been affrighted from some
cause they expected and had imagined this without the least ground for said
suspicion. That we told the said Theobalds, what this Adams had said and
told some of the neighbors as well. But we do certify that we never did,
nor now do not believe that the said Theobalds ever attempted to rob said
Adams....and that we believe them to be upright, honest and correct young men;
.....we are sorry that if from any remark we should have made, that the
characters of the said Theobalds shold be in any wise injured....."
