George
Lewis and Some of His Descendants
By
William Arthur Owen
1.
GEORGE1 LEWIS of Shelbourne Parish,
Loudoun County,
Virginia
, died in 1807. His will dated 2 July 1800 with a codicil
dated 28 April 1807 was proven 14 Sept. 1807 and recorded in the
Loudoun County Court
records at
Leesburg, Va.
It provides for disposition of real estate and personal property
to his wife Mary; the children of his daughter Mary Evans; the
children of his only son Lewis Lewis; his two minor daughters
Sarah and Rachel Lewis; and to Thomas James, son of his wife by
a former husband. An inventory and appraisement of his personal
property
18 Sept. 1807
is also recorded. ln May 1769 George Lewis bought from
David James 150 acres in
Loudoun
County, Va., for which he paid a sum of Pennsylvania money and which
he died possessed of in 1807. This land was described as located
on the road from Leesburg to Sniggers Gap, (now Bluemont), and
was conveyed in Feby. 1765 to David James of Chester County,
Pa., by Thomas Humphrey, to whom it was conveyed by Jonas Potts,
to whom it was granted in 1761 by patent from the proprietors
for the Northern Neck of
Virginia. This land was assessed in the name of Mary Lewis in 1807
and in 1809 in the name of Mary Marmaduke. She probably
married Samson Marmaduke who died in 1809. His will dated Feby
1809 and proven in April 1809 does not name a wife but was
witnessed by Rachel Lewis. In August 1812 William
McFarling and his wife Rachel, the daughter of George Lewis,
conveyed to Samuel Moore their interest in the estate of her
father George Lewis as provided by his will.
Deed acknowledged in
Culpeper
County,
Va. In March 1814 Culpeper
Marmaduke of
Loudoun County,
Va., leased to Samuel Moore, her son-in-law, her life interest in
the plantation which she then occupied. The records of
Pendleton County,
Ky.
, show conveyances of land in that county in 1822, after the
death of Lewis Lewis, by his heirs to his children in settlement
of the amount which he received for them from the estate of
their grandfather, George Lewis, as provided for in his will.
Mr. Samuel Lewis Moore living, (1923), in
Waterford,
Loudoun County,
Va., is a grandson of Sarah Lewis who married Samuel Moore and has
an old Bible which contains some records of the family of Mary,
the wife of George Lewis, who was his great-grandmother. In it
are recorded the births of: Margaret James 1773, Jessy James
1775, Martha James 1777, Thomas James 1779 and David James 1783,
who were apparently her children by a husband prior to her
marriage to George Lewis; then is recorded the births of Sarah
Lewis 1788 and Rachel Lewis 1790, who were her daughters by
George Lewis. In this Bible it is also recorded that Mary
Humphry, mother of the five mentioned children, was born in
1795, which apparently refers to the mother of the five James
children, indicating that her maiden name was Humphry, but, if
so, there is apparently an error in copying the date 1795 which
it seems might be 1745 instead. From the information
obtained it seems that George Lewis came to
Loudoun County, Va., from
Pennsylvania
and probably from
Chester
County. The tax lists of Chester County show the name of a
George Lewis in Vincent Township for the years 1765, 6, 7 &
8. The Lewis’ were numerous in both Chester County, Pa., and
Loudoun County, Va., during that time but he was not identified as related to any
of whom a record was found, however the records examined
contained little or no information for identifying the family of
some who were there. Many of those of the name in
Chester
, Bucks and Philadelphia Counties,
Pa.
, were apparently Welsh Quakers, as to whose families the Quaker
meeting records contained more or less information, also the
records of Baptists and other denominations contained references
to the name, but from these and other records examined,
including abstracts of wills, etc., from the county records, his
ancestry was not determined. He is not the George Lewis who
lived in Loudoun County,
Va., about the same time, whose wife was Violet Lewis and who was
apparently a son of Vincent Lewis.
It seems probable that George Lewis was born about 1730,
earlier or later, and that his wife Mary was not his first wife
and not the mother of his oldest two children.

LEWIS2 LEWIS (George), born in Pennsylvania, probably Chester
County, 1 Jan. 1756, moved to
Virginia
with his father who located in
Loudoun
County
about 1769. His name appears on the tax lists of Loudoun
County
from 1787 to 1812. In August 1787 the Commonwealth of Virginia
granted to Lewis Lewis 233 acres of land in Campbell County,
Va., which was sold and conveyed in 1851 by
his heirs to George W. Akers who married Nancy Davis, a
niece of his wife, Elizabeth Evans (Lewis). The license and bond
for the marriage of Lewis Lewis and Elizabeth Evans filed in the
office of the cleric in
Campbell County
,
Va.
, is dated 15 Dec.1783 and signed by Lewis Lewis and Sampson
Evans. She was born in Vincent Township, Chester County, Pa., 27
June 1759 or 1760 and was
a daughter Of Rees and Bridget Evans and a sister of Sampson
Evans who married Mary Lewis.* About 1812 Lewis Lewis and his
son George with their families moved from Loudoun County,
Va.
, to
Kentucky
and settled in
Pendleton
County
, on the
Ohio River
, where Lewis Lewis acquired 500 acres of land on which was a
log house that they lived in and which as remodeled and repaired
was used as a residence by descendants until destroyed by fire
about 1885. A new house was built on the site which is also
marked by a cedar tree transplanted when they located there. A
tradition is that they left
Virginia
intending to go to
Indiana
where some of the Hutchins' had located a few years before, but
on account of Indian uprisings they stopped in Adams County,
Ohio, for a season and were again stopped in Kentucky where they
remained. Lewis
Lewis died 10 Sept. 1822 in his sixty-seventh year. She lived in
the old home until in about her eighty-fourth year when due to a
broken hip resulting from a fall she was re-moved to the home of
her son George, near by. She died 23 Jan. 1864 at the
advanced age of 104 years. They were buried at the old graveyard
at
Flag
Spring
Baptist
Church
in
Camp-bell County
,
Ky.
, a few miles front their home. It is said that he was the first
buried there.
