At Falmouth, Ky. on Saturday evening, a young man named George Abernathy, while under the influence of liquor, went into a barber shop kept by a Negro name R. Keith, for the purpose of getting shaved.  The two had some hard words resulting in a scuff in which the barber bit Abernathy's finger.  The friends of the latter separated the parties and Abernathy then borrowed a shot-gun and started back to the shop.  Upon  approaching quite near to it, the barber shot at him, the ball taking effect in his right side near the nipple.  The wounded man was taken to his mother's where Dr. Roberts gave him every attention, though but little hope is entertained of his recovery.

The barber escaped through a rear door of his shop, but was subsequently arrested and lodged in jail by the citizens.  By the advice of Judge Ireland, the Sheriff detailed a guard of citizens to watch the jail to prevent any attempt to lynch Keith.
