The Beautiful Sherida

Generously

Generation No. 1

JESSE2
DAUGHERTY
(JOHN1*)
was born Bet. 1780 - 1784 During
Indian captivity (Detroit, Niagra, or Montreal), and died March 25, 1824 in
Nicholas or Pendleton County, KY. He
married ELIZABETH
OVERBEY
December 13, 1806 in Bourbon County, KY. She
was born 1785 in VA, and died 1850 in Pendleton County, KY.
Notes
for JESSE DAUGHERTY:
*There
is some disagreement regarding the father of Jesse. The letters of Henry Ogle, Sr. cites William Daugherty.
However, based on census information, list of prisoners (including those
taken at Ruddle’s Station) released from Montreal compiled under British
General Halderman, and family facts as described by Mr. Ogle, it is more
probable that Jesse was the son of John Daugherty.

Notes
for JOHN NELSON DAUGHERTY:
From
the Barton papers:
John
"Slick" Daugherty was killed accidentally. He was with some people surveying in the neighborhood, and he
fell, breaking his neck. Preacher
Acey Tomlin lived in Grant Co. near New Zion, where he had a good farm, and was
well-to-do. Jno "Slick"
Daugherty got mad at him about something and cut and fell lot of willows in the
baptizing hole on Gr. Crk. up above the old Bap Ch on Gr Crk.
Tomlin, in a sermon or talk, spoke of the future happy land, where there
would be no John "Slick" Daughertys to fall trees into the baptizing
places.
"Sam
Slick" was name of a book or character in a book, & John N. talked
about Sam Slick, until they gave him the name.
John
was called "Slick" because of his deal making and trading.

Notes
for JOHNATHON WINFIELD DAUGHERTY:
From
the Barton Papers:
Copied
March 18, 1945 from a clipping in possession of Mrs. Ida J. Dougherty widow of
Lewis H. Dougherty who was a brother of the three children whose death is
reported above. It seems to have
been clipped from the Frankfort Yeoman.
"Died.
In Pendleton county, Ky., of putrid sore throat, on the 12th of Sept.,
1858, Patrick Cody, son of John N. and Emily Margaret Dougherty, age 4 years, 7
months and 4 days.
Also,
on the 20th, Mary Ellen, a daughter of the same, age 6 years 10 months and 10
days.
Also
on the 2nd of October following, Jonathan Winfield, a son of the same, age 10
years 4 months and 12 days.
'God
moves in a mysterious way, his wonders to perform.' .... Why should three such
heavy strokes fall upon these parents in rapid succession seems inexplicable,
..." N.C.P.
The
above seems to be a clipping from the "Yeoman" of Frankfort.
On the reverse side of the clipping, are advertisements of Frankfort
business houses corresponding to the date, 1858
