Dance-Newman Cemetery

  Burial Location of the Newman Family Decedents is on the Old Thomas Dance Farm.

Take Route 330 to Markus Church. Turn on Crooked Creek Road and go 1 ¾ mile to the park Thompson Farm. On the left side of the road, the cemetery is on a hill behind the barn and corn crib.
 
 

  • Tombstone inscriptions found during the restoration of the cemetery:

    1. Nancy, wife of Thomas Dance Sr. Born June 19, 1781. Died May 11, (looks like 1857. Stone broken through date.
    2. Catharine Newman. Born June 27, 1844. Died July 14, 1854.
    3. Infant son of John W. and Martha A. Newman. Born May 25, 1869. Died May 25, 1869.
    4. Susan S. Duff. Died July 2, 1858. Age about 75 years old. (believe Susan could have been a slave.)
    5. Thomas Dance Sr. known to be buried here, but no stone found. Donald Thompson (son of Park Thompson) stated that this cemetery covered a large area around the remaining stone enclosure. Also, many black families and their children are buried here. Some of these deaths were the result of Cholera epidemic.
