We have noticed in the last few months that we are getting several young people who come in to research their ancestry. This is encouraging to see this happening as it appears to signify a revival in the interest of preserving the history and genealogy of our area and people.

Jeffery Bailey and his wife Courtney came in a few days ago. Jeffery’s family has been documented somewhat in the family books we have printed since 1979, such as the Bailey, Vanderpool, Patrick, Conley, Prater and Arnett books. We trust we have found enough info for this family to continue their research. They are related to a great many of our local people.

Jeffery’s paternal grandparents are Oscar Bailey and Darlene Conley. Oscar’s parents were Estill Bailey and Betty Bailey who lived in the Royalton area and who were very helpful to us a few years ago in recording info on the Bailey and Patrick families.

Estill "Es" was a son of Dillard Bailey who was born 3 May 1878 and died in 1970. His parents were William "Billy" Bailey (1844-1921) and Susan Barnett. Billy Bailey was a son of Samuel Bailey and Nancy Runyon. Dillard’s wife was Rosey Vanderpool b. 1876, dau of Robert L. Vanderpool and Catherine Allen.

Es’s wife Betty Bailey was a dau of Tom Bailey and California Patrick. Tom was born 1865, son of Samuel Bailey and Nancy Runyon. California was born in 1870, dau of Dr. Jackson Patrick and Jane Alred. In 1940 Tom Bailey (age 72) and California (age 69) lived on Bee Tree in the south part of Magoffin Co. KY.

Visitor Jeff’s grandmother Darlene was a dau of Jeff Conley and Vina Smith. Jeff Conley was a son of John Conley and Catherine Conley. Vina was a dau of Bill Smith and Mary Bailey.

On our visitor Jeff’s mother’s side, his grandparents were Luther Joseph and Martha Bailey. Luther was a son of Malcolm Joseph and Lona Prater. Malcolm was a son of Elijah Joseph (5 Oct 1864-22 Jan 1954) and his first wife Sarah England. Sarah was born in 1870 and d. 18 Nov 1918, dau of Enoch England and Nancy Collins.

Elijah Joseph was a son of Epperson Joseph and Mary Jane Green. Epperson was a son of William Joseph and Eliza Whitaker. William was a son of John Joseph and Usley Salyer. William’s wife Eliza was a dau of Johnson Whitaker and Susan (dau of Celia Howard).

Malcolm’s wife Lona was a dau of John Prater and his 2nd wife Jahaza Mullins. John was born in 1867 and died in 1937. He was first married to Betty Rowe, dau of Isaac Rowe. John was a son of Riley Prater and Lucretia "Creasie" Shepherd. John’s wife Jahaza was born in 1877 and died in 1950, a dau of Ambrose Mullins and Barbara Watkins.

Luther Joseph’s wife Martha was a dau of Ellis Bailey and Lona Thacker. Ellis was a son of Jackson "Jack" Bailey and Cindy Bailey. Lona was a dau of Bunyan Thacker and Clora Arnett. Clora Arnett was a twin daughter of Roland Arnett and Sarah Eveline Marshall. Roland was a son of Stephen "Nat" Arnett and Mary Jane Risner. Eveline was a dau of W. J. Marshall and Nancy Holbrook.

Jeff’s wife Cortney’s paternal grandparents were Garland Jenkins who was born in 1919 to William Gobel Jenkins and Ona Coffey. Garland was married to Betty Helton, a dau of Sherman Helton and Cassie Hartsock.

William Gobel was a son of Jasper Jenkins and his 2nd wife Mary E. Conley. Mary was born in 1870 and died in 1939, a dau of Isaac Conley and Rachel Pennington.

Jasper was a son of William "Billy" Jenkins and Sarah Montgomery. Ona Coffey Jenkins (17 Oct 1899-9 Jun 1986) was a dau of Bruce Coffey and Catherine Tackett. Catherine was a dau of Daniel Tackett and Amanda Jenkins.

Sherman Helton was a son of Charles Helton and Eliza Montgomery. Cassie was a dau of Tom Hartsock and Polly Ann "Pud" Gullett. Tom was a son of Samuel Hartsock and Rosa Stanford. Polly Ann was a dau of John M. Gullett and Eliza Patrick.

Courtney’s maternal grandparents are Smith Penix, Jr. and Ima Jean Johnson. Smith Penix, Jr. was born in 1923 to Smith Penix and Rebecca Anne Lykins. Smith, Jr. died 15 Oct 1987. His father Smith Penix, Sr. was born 25 Dec 1889 and died 19 Feb 1928 at age 39. Smith, Sr. married in Magoffin County on 30 Jun 1912 to Rebecca Anne Lykins. Rebecca was born 29 Aug 1894 and died 6 Nov 1958 in Morgan Co. KY, a dau of Frank Lykins and Alifair "Allie" Coffee. They are buried in the Wallace Brown Cemetery at Matthew in Morgan Co. KY.

Frank Lykins was born in 1864 and died in 1939. He and Alifair Coffee were married 31 May 1889 in Magoffin County.

As we prepare this column we see that November has come to a close; the year is passing quickly. We thank everyone for their support during what has been a difficult year for us here at the Magoffin County Historical Society.
