Volume 2 of the People, Places and Events portion of the Magoffin County Sesquicentennial books has been printed. We were pleased to find that enough material for another volume is in the files so we are presently working on that. We are happy that so many people participated in this project and just wish that someone from every family in Magoffin County had submitted material on their family. This set is truly a historical keepsake.

James Streeter and his wife Mary of Ypsilanti, MI came in to search for info on James’s mother’s ancestry. He is related to the Hackworth, Stone, Poe, Woods and Shell families and had researched most of his family back five generations or more.

His Woods family descends from Alexander Woods and Susannah Boyd who were born in Virginia through a son Nathaniel Woods b. 1838 in VA d. in KY. He married in 1861 KY to Lucinda Boyd. Their son James Henry Woods lived in Johnson Co. KY and married in 1898 to Johna Stone, a dau of George Stone and Amanda Marshall who lived in Magoffin County.

George Stone was born 26 Mar 1855 and married 1 May 1875 in Magoffin to Amanda Marshall. George, who died 22 Apr 1940 in Floyd Co. KY, was a son of Charles Stone and Zilpha Adams. We found George’s wife Amanda listed in the Floyd Co. KY vital statistics. Amanda Marshall was born 18 Oct 1859 to Thomas Marshall and Nancy Jane Bays. The 1860 Magoffin census lists Thomas Marshall age 24, wife Jane age 18 with a 7 months old daughter Mandy J. According to a document supplied by Bob Whittaker we find that Amanda was born 18 Oct 1859 and she had a sister Elizabeth Marshall b. 13 Jan 1861. Their father Thomas Marshall was a private in Co. F, 14th Regt. KY Vols. and died of typhoid fever at Paintsville, KY on 2 Dec 1863.

Nancy Jane Bays is believed to be a daughter of Isham or Isom Bays b. ca. 1790. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. There is a marriage record in Pittsylvania Co. VA for Isom Bays and Polly Taylor dated 1818. Isom died at age 79 in Magoffin County on 22 Jun 1870. The Magoffin census records list him with a wife Susan and Vital Statistics show she died in Magoffin in 1880.

Amanda Marshall Stone died 9 Feb 1890 at Flat Gap in Johnson Co. KY

Another visitor, Monty Howell of Bloomington, IN learned about our historical society from the Internet. He was researching the Minix, Mullins and Jackson families.

Monty’s grandparents on his mother’s line were Earl Jackson and Mabel Bailey.

Earl was a son of Leander "Lee" Jackson b. 18 May 1875 and d. 11 Oct 1955 and Minnie. Lee married Minnie "Marshall" on 7 Jul 1898 in Magoffin County. Lee was a son of John W. Jackson and Mary "Pop" or "Polly" Minix.

Lee Jackson’s wife Minnie was born 20 Feb 1882 and most records say she was a daughter of Add Marshall and Emily Cole. Add was a son of Washington Marshall and Nancy Holbrook. Emily was a dau of Dial Cole and Rebecca Mary Fletcher. Minnie died 9 Jun 1962; she and her husband Lee are buried in Knox, IN.

Our visitor Monty Howell believes Minnie was a Mullins by birth and says there is a Magoffin County court record of a petition to adopt Minnie by Add and Emily Marshall.

This seems to be substantiated by the 1920 Magoffin County census which records the following: Head of household Add Marshall age 65, wife Emily (Cole) age 58, Minnie Jackson age 37 (adopted daughter), Lee Jackson age 44 (son-in-law) and Jackson grandchildren: Earley age 20, Addie age 14, Virgie age 12, Sissie age 10, Almie age 8, Olivia age 6, Dora age 4 and Flora age 2 months.

In addition, the 1900 Magoffin census records Add Marshall and Emily had been married for 25 years and had 0 children. His parents, Wash and Nancy Marshall lived with them. In 1910 Add and Emly are listed as having been married 34 years with 0 children. In their home that year were Bud Owens age 27 and single and Eppie Howard age 11. Lee and Minnie Jackson lived next door.

When Lee and Minnie’s son Earl Jackson married Mabel Bailey in 26 Jul 1924 in Magoffin County he gave his mother’s maiden name as "Mullins".

If anyone can give any additional info on Minnie’s parentage, please contact Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email [email protected]

Earl Jackson’s wife Mabel was a dau of John "Johnnie" Bailey and Betty Miller. John was born 27 Jul 1877 and died 10 Nov 1927. He is buried in the Warnie Bailey Cemetery. His wife Betty was born 3 Jun 1887 and died 30 Aug 1966. Her daughter Ocie stated she was a dau of John Miller and Frances Miller.

John and Betty Bailey were listed in the 1920 census of Breathitt County, KY with children (1) Henry C. Bailey m. Rosa, (2) Mabel Bailey m. Earl Jackson, (3) Martha Bailey m. German Bailey, (4) James Cobdin Bailey (Sergeant-Major, US Army) m. 1st Madeline Gray; m. 2nd Ruby Cornelius, (5) Emma Bailey m. Bill Risner, Sr. son of Harris Risner, (6) Warren Bailey b. 1917 d. 1920 of diphtheria, and (7) Dora Bailey (believed to have died young). Another son (8) Dennis Bailey was born in 1925. By 1930 Betty was widowed and lived on Bee Tree of Oakley in Magoffin County with children Martha, James C., Emma, Ocie and Dennis.
