We had two visitors whose paternal ancestors were from West Virginia but with Magoffin County family on their maternal lines. Our visitors wanted to know of any relationship in their Miller families. We could find no direct Miller ancestor.

Gary Rose is a grandson of Orville Rose b. in WV and Myrtle Elizabeth Green who lived in Wayland, Floyd Co. KY in 1940. Myrtle, b. 1901 d. 1982, was a dau of Grant Green and Amanda Miller. Grant and Amanda were married in Magoffin County on 8 Mar 1880. Grant was born about 1859 to Elijah Green and Arty Allen. Amanda b. 1860 d. 1951 Floyd Co. KY, was a dau of Abraham Miller and Catherine Hale.

Elijah Green and family can be found in the 1850 and 1860 Breathitt Co. KY census with children (1) Mary J. "Polly" Green b. 1844, (2) Celia Green b. 1846, (3) Ceatta Green b. 1847 m. John D. Oliver d. 1928 Elliott Co. KY, son of Joshua Oliver and Rachel Duff, (4) Columbus Green b. 1849, (5) Elizabeth Green b. 1852, (6) William Green b. 3 Mar 1852 Quicksand, (7) Elisha Green b. 1854, (8) George Green b. 1856 m. 1880 to Mary England, dau of Enoch England, (9) John Green b. 1858. By 1870 Elijah, who was born in 1814, was deceased and Arty lived in Magoffin County with children Elizabeth, William, Elisha, George, John and an additional child (10) Grant Green b. 1861 m. Amanda Miller, dau of Abe & Catherine (see below).

In 1850 Celia Howard, age 60, was in the Green household.

Amanda Miller Green’s father Abraham Miller was born in 1831 NC and died in 1910 Magoffin Co. KY. Abraham Miller’s mother was Elizabeth Miller. Abraham married Catherine Hale b. 1836 d. 1907, dau of James Hale and Jennie Sanders. They are buried at the head of Salt Lick, Magoffin Co. KY.

By 1860 Floyd County, KY Abe and Catherine had three children (1) Mildred Miller b. 1854, (2) James Miller b. 1856 and our visitor’s ancestor (3) Amanda Miller b. 1859 m. Grant Green. We did not locate the family in an 1870 census but by 1880 they lived in Magoffin County and had these additional children: (4) Andrew Jackson Miller b. 1862 d. 1936 m. 1880 to Mahala Owens and m. 2^nd Lida -?-, (5) Breckenridge Miller b. 1864, (6) William Lee Miller b.1866 d. 1943 m. Sarah Margaret Sartin, (7) Abraham Miller b. 1868 m. Delana Howard, (8) Jane Miller b. 1871, (9) Mousie Miller b. 1873, (10) Katie Miller b. 1876 m. Adam Gus Holbrook and Henry Compton, (11) Betty Miller b. 1878.

Our second visitor with Miller ancestry was Kenneth Belcher; his father’s family also originated in West Virginia. His mother’s parents were Electious "Leck" Miller b. 1866 and married in 1889 Magoffin Co. KY to Laura Belle Howard b. 1870 Howard’s Branch, Magoffin Co. KY.

Leck was a son of Samuel Miller, Jr. b. 1843 Breathitt Co. KY (Civil War soldier) and died in 1918 Floyd Co. KY. Samuel, Jr. was a son of Samuel Miller, Sr. and Franky Carpenter.

Samuel, Jr.’s wife was Arty Bailey, dau of Joseph Bailey and Jennie Runyon.

The children of Samuel Miller, Jr. and Arty Bailey were (1) Angeline Miller m. William "Bill" Mullins, (2) John Miller m. Silvany Owens, (3) Leck Miller (see above), (4) Lee Miller m. Elizabeth Barker, (5) Ellen Miller m. James Bailey, (6) Jane "Jennie" Miller m. William "Bill" Prater and Leander Miller, (7) Joseph Miller did not marry, (8) Jacob Miller m. Betty Bailey and Lillie Prater, (9) Boyd Miller m. Rachel Bailey, (10) Katy Miller m. Lewis Miller, (11) Cleveland Miller m. 1^st Susie Miller; m. 2^nd to Darcus Miller and m. 3^rd Liddie McGuire, (12) Adam "Add" Miller m. 1^st Liza Joseph, m. 2nd to Rosie Allen, dau of Hark Allen; m. 3rd Prudie Joseph and m. 4^th to Lula Prater.

Samuel Miller, Sr. was born 1786 North Carolina and he died in 1848 Perry Co. KY. He was the son of Samuel Miller and Bitha -?- b. about 1782. They are listed in the 1820 Clay County, KY census.

This elder Samuel was a son of Stephen Miller born about 1750 in the Carolinas and he married Mary C. Her maiden name is traditionally given as "Bishop" but no evidence has been found.

Leck Miller’s wife Laura Belle was a dau of Wiley D. Howard and his 2^nd wife Minerva Jane Patrick. Wiley D. first married Parrot Allen. Wiley and Minerva were married in 1869 Magoffin Co. KY. Wiley D. was a son of Samuel Howard who was a son of John Howard and Nancy Cameron. Samuel Howard’s wife was Delaney Jones, a dau of Charles Jones and Jemima Spradlin.

Wiley D.’s wife Minerva was a dau of Dr. Jackson Patrick and Jane Alred. Vital Statistics records give Dr. Patrick’s parents as John and Sarah Patrick.
