Many experiences and happenings in our lives here at the Magoffin County Historical Society have caused extreme delays in the work that we normally do but we are happy to report that Volume One of our book People, Places, Events of 1860 to 2010 commemorating Magoffin County’s 150th Birthday is now in print and ready for sale. This volume contains 422 pages of material that was contributed to us by persons interested in recording the history and genealogy of our county. We invite you to stop in at 191 South Church Street and take a look at our newest book. Work is now on-going for Volume Two and we will post a message when we finish that one!!

Two of our recent visitors had Bailey ancestors and were distantly related. They were Ron Bailey who came to attend a Hicks Family Reunion in Prestonsburg and Mark Netts who was on his way to North Carolina and stopped to do some research.

Ron Bailey’s grandparents were William Bailey and Ollie Bradley. William Bailey was born in 1899 and died in 1965 Alger, OH, a son of Hiram Bailey and Cora Watkins. Hiram (son of John Bailey, Jr. and Katherine Runyon) was born in 1862 and died in 1908 while in the logwoods when a tree fell on him. He is buried on the Dan Wireman Cemetery at the mouth of Brushy in the Gunlock, KY area. Hiram married in 1889 Magoffin Co. KY to Cora Watkins. Hiram was first married on 28 Jan 1883 to Rebecca Wireman, dau of John B. Wireman and Florence Sizemore. She later married Samuel Bailey.

Cora Watkins was born 23 Oct 1874 (according to Breathitt Co. Vital Statistics) and died in 1934, a dau of Lewis Watkins and Mary "Polly" Salyer. There is a marriage record in Magoffin County dated 22 Jan 1894 for one Cora Watkins and George Clemons. Cora later married W. M. (may be Wilson) Miller and they are buried in Fayette, West Virginia.

Lewis Watkins (1840-1918) was a son of Thomas Watkins and Lucinda Howard. Lewis and his wife Polly are buried on the Lewis Watkins Cemetery on Quicksand of Breathitt Co. KY. Polly was a dau of Samuel Salyer and Margaret "Peggy" Picklesimer.

William Bailey’s wife Ollie Bradley was born in 1910 and died in 1999 Kenton, OH. With the help of Donna Hammons Miller of Shelbyville, KY we were able to determine that Ollie was a dau of Lewis Bradley and Anna Ousley.

Lewis Bradley was born in 1874 and died in 1955 Alger, OH, a son of John Riley Bradley and Louqueena Watkins who were married in 1868. John Riley was a son of William Bradley and Elizabeth Pridemore. Louquenna was a dau of Thomas Watkins, Jr. and Lucinda Howard.

Lewis Bradley’s wife Anna was born 6 Dec 1887 to Jonas Ousley and Sarah Jane Prater; Donna also provided us with the names of their parents. Jonas was a son of John Ousley and Mary Mead. Sarah Jane was a dau of Joseph Prater and Elizabeth Reffitt.

Anna and Lewis Bradley had at least two children together, Isaac "Ike" Bradley and the above named Ollie Bradley Bailey. Our Prater manuscript (an update on our 1980 Prater family book) has info that Ollie later married Elbert Chitwood (1894-1952) and married 3rd in 1953 to Eli Hicks, a son of Will Hicks and Susie Collins. Ollie’s death date was given as May of 1965.

We would like for anyone who can provide additional or corrected info to contact the Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email: [email protected])

Our other visitor with a Bailey ancestor was Mark Netts, a grandson of Walter Howard and Jane Bailey who were married in Magoffin County on 10 Jan 1931.

Walter was a son of Boyd Howard and Amanda Conley. Boyd was born in 1885 to George Howard and Mary Jane Conley. Amanda was a dau of Tom Conley and Malinda Prater.

Walter Howard’s wife Jane was a dau of Morgan "Morg" Bailey (1887-1965) and Willie Conley who were married in 1907 Magoffin Co. KY. Morg was a son of Irvin Bailey and Artie Marie Mullins who are buried on the Green Carpenter Cemetery at Swampton, KY. Irvin was a son of Joseph Bailey and Jenny Runyon. Artie was a dau of Ambrose Mullins and Barbara Watkins.

Willie Conley Bailey was a dau of Thomas Conley and Malinda J. Prater. Thomas was a son of Elijah Conley and Nancy Joseph. Malinda was a dau of Riley Prater and Creasy Shepherd.

Mark’s main family question was concerning the children of Walter Howard’s first wife, Polly Joseph. Polly was first married Dona Allen and they had these children: (1) child b. 1917, (2) Ethel Allen b. 1918 m. Clyde Bradley, (3) Otto Allen b. 1919 m. Betty Whitaker, (4) Emogene Allen b. 1921, (5) Otis Allen b. 1923 m. Virgie Whitaker and Emma Murrell, (6) child b. 1924 and (7) Ray W. Allen b. 1925 m. Lucille Frakes.

Ethel’s obituary names brothers Otto, Ottis and Ray and a brother Henry J. Shead of Murray, KY. Ethel’s brother, Ray Allen’s obit names a half-brother Henry Sled (note different spelling of surname) of Murray, KY. The contributor to the information on this family in our 1989 Allen family book also names a half-brother Henry J. (Howard) Shedd b. 10 Dec 1928.

Mark Netts would like information on Henry J. Sled/Shead/Shedd of Murray, KY. Please contact us at the above address.
