It was a pleasure to have Bernice Moore’s great-granddaughter Alexandria Taulbee visit recently in search of her ancestry. Bernice was a mainstay of the Magoffin County Historical Society. We depended on her when any information was needed on the families who lived in her area of the county. She had a good collection of research material that she shared with us and the many people she kept in contact with by mail. We lost a wonderful friend and ally when Bernice died 13 December 2015.

We will try to help Alexandria with the names of some of her ancestors and hope that it will enable her to continue her search.

Alexandria’s paternal grandparents were Samuel Straughter Taulbee, Jr. and Effie Napier.

Alexandria’s paternal great grandparents were Samuel Straughter Taulbee, Sr. b. 8 Feb 1907 Morgan Co. KY and died 1986 (buried Riverside Cem., Perry Co. KY) and wife Ruby Lou Jones. Ruby was born 1913 Morgan Co. KY and died in 2003 Perry Co. KY, a dau of Obediah Jones (1880-1954) and Leona King (1897-1913) Obediah and Leona were married 15 May 1908 in Morgan Co. KY.

Samuel Taulbee, Sr. was a son of Russell Breckenridge Taulbee (1887-1962) Adele, Morgan Co. KY and Bessie Mae Anderson. Russel B.’s parents were Samuel Henry Taulbee (1856-1906) and Lucinda Ellen Davis (1862-1941)

Samuel Taulbee, Jr.’s wife Effie Napier was a dau of Edward "Ned" Napier and Hester Campbell. Ned Napier was a son of William M. Napier and Elizabeth Feltner. Hester (1906-1942) was a dau of Garrett Campbell and Elizabeth "Betty" Eversole.

Alexandria’s great grandparents on her mother’s side can be found in many of the Magoffin County Historical Society’s publications, thanks to Bernice Moore’s participation in our printing projects.

Her maternal grandfather's parents were Roscoe Stephens, the son of Edgar "Ed" Stephens and Lillie Allen. Ed was a son of Horatio "Ratio" Stephens and Mary Whitaker. Ed’s wife Lillie Mae was a dau of Hayden Allen and Nancy "Nan" Howard. Hayden was a son of George and Raney (Salyer) Allen; a grandson of John and Nancy Jane (Click) Allen and of David and Susannah (Miles) Salyer.

Roscoe’s wife Delilah Jane was a dau of Elliott Wireman and Martha Hale. Elliott was a son of Wiley and Delilah (Allen) Wireman. Martha was a dau of Sam and Jane (Allen) Hale.

Alexandria’s great grandmother Bernice married Ballard Moore b. 1924 in Lawrence Co. KY. Ballard was a son of Lee Roy Moore (1893-1957) and Georgia Meade. Lee Roy was a son of Noah Moore and Melissa Newman.

Bernice’s parents were Norman Dotson (1893-1975) and Julia Marshall (1896-1983). Julia was a well-known storekeeper in the Ivyton area. Norman was a son of Alexander Dotson and Melvina Shepherd (they are buried in Hardin Co. OH). Norman’s wife Julia was a dau of Logan Marshall (1867-1926) and Mary Belle Risner (1873-1968). Logan was a son of George Marshall and Idress Risner. Mary Belle was a dau of James P. Risner and Polly Poe.

Alexander Dotson was a son of William Henderson "Bill" Dotson (1846-1912) and Nancy Jane Richardson (1850-1921). Bill Dotson was a Civil War soldier, son of Lewis Dotson and Elizabeth Langley. Bill’s wife Nancy Jane was a dau of Daniel Richardson and Mary "Polly" Prater. Polly was a dau of William and Obedience Prater.

A researching cousin of Alexandria’s was Hannah Marsillett. Her grandfather Paul Thurman Marsillett was a son of Mack Marsillett b. 1906 d. 1990 (buried Blue River, Floyd Co. KY), and a grandson of Jacob Marsillett b. 1836 and Lynda Hughes (dau of Matthias and Margaret Hughes).

Paul Thurman’s wife Emily Rowe was a dau of Jim Henry Rowe who married Leola Dyer. Jim Henry was a son of Newton B. Rowe and Emily Susan Back. Newton B. was a son of Nathan Rowe and Nancy Griffey. Emily Susan was a dau of John Wesley Back and Lucy Ann Sutphin.

Leola Dyer’s parents were Bolden Dyer and Lela Arnett.

Hannah’s maternal grandparents are Harold Patrick and Cora Sue Marshall. Harold was a son of World War I soldier Leslie Patrick and Elizabeth Lou Howes. Leslie was a son of Henry Patrick and Polly Risner. Elizabeth Lou was a dau of James Howes and Elizabeth "Lizzie’ Rice.

Cora Sue was a dau of Guy Marshall and Nora Spradlin. Guy Marshall was a son of Logan and Mary Belle (Risner) Marshall mentioned above. Guy’s wife Nora was a dau of William J. Spradlin (1866-1943) and Emily Crace (1868-1947).

We want to correct a typographical error we made on the death date of Hugh Stacy in the column of March 16th of this year. Rebecca Tran has visited the cemetery of Hugh W. Stacy on the left Fork of Stacy Branch near Grape Creek here in Magoffin County and verifies that this marker reads "Hue Stacy, born 1826, died Mar 3, 1898". Also more research needs to be done on Hugh Stacy’s son Zachariah Stacy’s family, in particular, Zachariah’s son Preston "Press" Stacy. Press was born 26 Dec 1908 and died in Baltimore, MD on 27 Aug 1988. We appreciate Rebecca’s help with this and invite anyone with info on the Stacy family to contact us.
