One of our visitors this week is a descendant of Dudley Howard (1905-1984) and Gladys Elizabeth Lemaster (1908-1978) who are both buried in Pike Co. OH.

Dudley was a son of Grover Howard and Katherine "Kate" Nickell.

Kate Nickell was born 22 Nov 1884 to James Harvey Nickell and Nancy Jane Howard. James Harvey (b. 9 May 1855 on State Road died 26 May 1939 in Pike Co. OH) was a son of Francis Marion Nickell and Elizabeth Howard who were married 24 Jan 1857 in Morgan County, KY. Francis Marion was born in 1836 and died in 1863. After his death his widow Elizabeth married John Gentry. Elizabeth was a dau of James Howard and Sarah Lemaster.

James Harvey Nickell’s wife Nancy Jane was a dau of Henry Howard and Lucinda Howard.

James Harvey Nickell’s dau Kate first married James Madison Howard (1876-1959), a son of Franklin C. Howard and Nancy Jane Blanton. They had one son Gordon L. Howard. James Madison next married Mary Amyx (1888-1966). James and Mary are buried in the Bluegrass Cemetery in Salyersville, KY.

Kate’s second marriage was to Grover Howard b. 9 May 1889 d. 10 Jun 1962, son of Benjamin F. Howard and Jahaza Howard. Kate and Grover’s children were Raney b. 1902, Dudley b. 1905 and Russell b. 1908.

Benjamin F. Howard, a son of Reuben Howard and Nancy Arnett, was married 20 Dec 1877 in Magoffin County to Jahaza, a dau of Andrew Howard and Matilda Ray.

Grover Howard later married Martha Adkins and had other children: Zada b. 1914, Ethel b. 1916, Beckham b. 1918, Flossie b. 1921 and Easter H. b. 1926.

Kate’s 3rd marriage was to Floyd Burns Baker b. 1888 d. 1960. The 1930 Pike Co. OH census shows Floyd as age 30, Catherine age 46. They have two children: Charles age 12 and Ora age 10, along with Catherine’s son Russell Howard age 21 in their household.

Dudley Howard’s wife Gladys was a dau of Isaac Fleming "Flem" Lemaster (1854 Morgan Co. KY-1920 Magoffin County, KY) and Louisa "Lou" Elam (1866-1954). Flem’s parents were William "Bill" Lemaster and Elizabeth Williams who were married 15 Mar 1847 in Morgan Co. KY.

Lou Elam’s parents were Richard Taylor Elam (1848-1907) and Clarinda Harper. R. T.’s parents were Jeremiah Elam and Elizabeth Nickell. Clarinda’s parents were Patton and Nancy Harper.

We had some problem with our phone recently and a very nice young man, David James Minix, came in to check it out and fixed it quickly. As he worked we wrote out a preliminary ancestor chart then filled it in more completely after he left

David is a grandson of F. D. "Flem" Minix b. 1927 d. 1999 in IN and Fanny Mae Shepherd b. 1932 d. 2011 IN. Flem was a son of McKinley Minix and Peggy Jackson. McKinley was a son of Labe Minix (4 May 1924-17 Dec 1955) and Armina Lovely. Labe was a son of Sam Minix and Lillie Howard.

McKinley’s wife Peggy was a dau of Roland Jackson (1858-1925) and Mary Minix (1859-1950). Roland was a son of John Jackson and Mary Ann "Polly" or "Pop" Minix. Roland’s wife Mary was a dau of Charles "Charlie" Minix and Margaret "Peggy" Patrick.

Flem Minix’s wife Fanny was a dau of Rev. Clay Shepherd (1 Feb 1904-5 Dec 1993 IN) and Annie Mae Whitaker (20 Feb 1904-24 May 1979 IN). Clay was a son of Mort Shepherd (1882-1937 IN) and Mollie Howard. Mort was a son of Brison F. "Flitterfoot Brice" Shepherd and Loueaster Salyer.

Clay Shepherd’s wife Annie was a dau of Lewis Whitaker and Belle Hodge.

On his mother’s line, David is a grandson of Robert Fletcher and Dorothy Salyer. In 1930 Robert and Dorothy lived in a house belonging to the Dawkins Log and Mill Company on South Railroad Street in Royalton, KY. Robert worked in the lumber yard there.

Robert was born in 1906 and died 7 Sep 1984, a son of Frank J. Fletcher and Dosha Howard. Frank J. was a son of George W. Fletcher and Sarah Jane Bailey who were married 15 Aug 1877. George was a son of Isaac Fletcher and Susannah Gilbert. Sarah Jane was born 16 Dec 1859 to Margaret Adams Bailey. Margaret was a dau of Daniel Adams and Jane Stone. She and Alfred Bailey had children Sanford R. Bailey b. 1844, Rebecca Bailey b. 1846, John A. Bailey b. 1847, Jackson Bailey b. 1850. A son Thomas W. Bailey was born 23 Oct 1855 Floyd Co. KY and died 19 Jan 1925 in Perry Co. KY.

Frank’s wife Dosha was a dau of Harvey Howard and Lou (sometimes seen as Louellen or Louanna) Joseph. Lou was a dau of Abner Joseph and Louisa Owens. Abner was a son of John Joseph and Usley Salyer who are buried on Carpenter Hill, Swampton, KY. Harvey was a son of Lewis Howard and Elizabeth "Betty" Shepherd and is buried on the Kirk Howard Cemetery, first known as the Sam Howard Cemetery, at the mouth of Bull Mire, Galdia, KY.

Dorothy Salyer Fletcher was a dau of William J. Salyer and Arizona Carty. William J. was a son of Isaac Salyer and Perlina Bailey. Arizona was a dau of D. J. Carty, Sr. and Armina Jackson.
