This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the May 4, 2017 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We are continuing work on the Sesquicentennial book of people, places and events in Magoffin County's history. Several people submitted material for that book about Reuben Patrick, a Captain in the Civil War, who served in the 14th KY Vol. Infantry. Captain Reuben married in Johnson Co. KY on 5 Nov 1851 to Amanda Burns Hager, a daughter of Confederate soldier and first sheriff of Johnson County, KY, Daniel Hager and Violet Porter. Daniel and Violet were married in 1822 Floyd Co. KY. Violet died in 1877; Daniel died in 1887. They are buried in Old Town Cemetery in Paintsville, KY.

Reuben and Amanda's family is listed in several of our genealogy publications. Some of their children are covered quite thoroughly but we had only sparse information on others. We attempted to find additional info and are presenting it here with the request that anyone who can add to or correct anything here will contact the Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 or email [email protected].

The 1850 Floyd County, KY census lists Reuben Patrick at age 20 in the home of his parents Meredith and Rebecca (Williams) Patrick. Reuben and Amanda Hager were married on 11 November 1851 and they are listed on the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records of Magoffin Co. KY.
