This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the April 27, 2017 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We got a very nice letter from Rebecca Baldorf whose mother was a daughter of Lawrence G. Bauch and his wife Daisy "Doll" Sizemore. Daisy was a daughter of Elbert Sizemore and Julia Patton. Julia was a daughter of Franklin Pierce Patton and Caroline Patrick.

In one of our earlier articles we had mistakenly reported that Franklin Pierce Patton was a son of "Kash Patton" and Ms. Baldorf wrote to tell us about our slip-up. Without researching, we had thought the name "Kash" that had been penciled in on the printed census record was a parent and we thank Mrs. Baldorf for helping us learn more about this family.

We began to correct our mistake by finding Ms. Baldorf’s grandparents Elbert Sizemore and Julia Patton in the census. Julia was born in 1891 in Magoffin County and died in July of 1959. We found in her obituary that her siblings were Mrs. Kearny Patrick, Mrs. Harrison Adams, Ben Patton and Kell Patton.

In the marriage records we learned that Kearney Patrick married Mae Patton and that Harrison Adams married Dolly Patton.

Searching the 1900 Magoffin census we found Franklin P. Patton age 42 with wife Caroline age 40. In their home were (1) Nannie Patton b. 1881, Alice Patton b. 1883, (3) Frank Patton b. 1887, (4) Julia Patton b. 1890, (5) Dollie Patton b. 1892, (6) Kellie Patton b. 1893, (7) Nellie Patton b. 1896, (8) Benjamin Patton b. 1898 and Mae Patton b. 1900.

With so many names matching Julia’s siblings we knew we had the right family. Looking into Franklin Patton’s family, we next found him in 1880 living on Burning Fork. His name was listed as Pearce Patton age 23, wife Caroline was age 20 and they had a seven months old son Warney.

The 1870 Magoffin census listed Franklin P. as age 13 in the home of Edmond Collinsworth and wife Rebecca both listed as age 56.

Edmond Collinsworth, Jr. was a son of Edmund Collinsworth, Sr. and Elizabeth Shepherd of Lee Co. VA. Edmond, Jr.’s wife was Rebecca George. They married about 1835 in VA. The 1840 Lee Co. VA census lists them with two children under the age of 5, we believe they were William Collinsworth b. 1837 and Elizabeth Collinsworth b. 1839.

The 1850 Lee Co. VA census lists Edmond and his wife Rebecca with children (1) William Collinsworth age 13, (2) Elizabeth Collinsworth age 11, (3) Martha Collinsworth age 9, (4) Nancy Collinsworth age 7, (5) Mary Collinsworth age 5.

The family moved to the Burning Fork area of present day Magoffin County before 1854 as this was the birth year of their daughter Louisa. Her birth is recorded in the Floyd County, KY Vital Statistics, which names her parents.

The daughter Martha married William "Big Bill" Arnett; her sister Nancy married William "Blackhawk" Sizemore’s son John Sizemore.

Living in the home in 1860 Magoffin County was dau Nancy Collinsworth age 16, dau Fannie Collinsworth age 11, dau Louisa Collinsworth age 6, dau Elizabeth Patton age 21 (listed as "cook") with children Pearce Patton age 3 and Rebecca J. Patton age 1.

Searching the Floyd County Vital Statistics we found that Samuel Patton and Elizabeth "Betty" Collinsworth had a son Pierce Patton b. 22 Aug 1856. Apparently Samuel Patton died sometime in the late 1850s.

Pearce’s sister, Rebecca J. Patton was born 3 Mar 1860 and died 6 Jan 1940. She married Houston Patrick, son of Greenville Patrick and Evaline Rice. Rebecca’s death certificate gave the names of her parents as Sam Patton and Betty Collins.

Franklin Pierce Patton and Caroline were married 19 Oct 1859. Caroline was a daughter of Elijah Patrick and Louisa Rule.

Julia Patton and her husband Elbert Sizemore are buried on the Roark Cemetery on Burning Fork. Elbert was a son of Jack Sizemore and Emily Collinsworth. Jack was a son of Granville "Poke" Sizemore and Tacey Minix. Granville was a son of George "Goldenhawk" Sizemore and Sallie Anderson.

The same week we received the above letter, we had a visitor from Walton, KY looking for her Salyer family. Laura Roland’s great-grandmother was Nellie Salyer b. 1894 d. 1984, a daughter of one John Salyer.

Her Internet search had led her to think that her John was a son of William and Luqueena (Howard) Salyer.

With our books and materials at hand (particularly Johnson County census records and the Salyer book by Elisabeth Salyer) we were able to find that her Salyer ancestor was John P. Salyer born in 1863 Johnson Co. KY who married Julia Burgess, a dau of Robert and Sarah Burgess.

John P. was a son of Marshall Laney Salyer who married in Morgan Co. KY on 27 Aug 1856 to Mary Ann Hamilton. Marshall L. was a son of Joseph Salyer b. 1805 VA and his wife Sarah Salyer who lived and died in Johnson Co. KY.

Now that Ms. Roland has the info on her correct Salyer ancestor she will be able to continue with her family research.
