This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the March 16, 2017 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We had been enjoying what we thought would be an early spring here in Magoffin County. Our spring shrubs and flowers are in full bloom and we see signs of spring everywhere but our weatherman has warned us that a week or more of winter weather is coming our way that may include snow.

We have had some interesting queries in recent days. Some we could help with and some with which we need help (smile).

We get many queries from people whose ancestor’s live or have lived on Johnson’s Fork of Magoffin County. One visitor gave her line of descent from the Stacy and Wages families. Her great grandfather was Arvin Stacy. Arvin and his wife Della Wages were married in Magoffin County in 1930. By 1940 they lived in Fayette Co. KY. Both died in Ohio, Arvin in 1983 and Della in 1998.

Arvin was a son of Zachariah T. Stacy who was born in 1875 at Epsom on Johnson’s Fork of Magoffin County to Hugh W. Stacy and Lucinda Patrick. Zack married Rosa Belle Coffey b. 9 Mar 1875, dau of David Coffee and Nancy "Nannie" Brown.

Zack and Rosa were married about 1893 and they had 10 children: (1) James Stacy b. 1894 Breathitt Co. KY m. Della Mefford Centers, dau of Burl Centers; (2) John Henry Stacy b. 1895 m. Clara Lindon, dau of Bob and Emma Lindon; (3) Kerney Stacy b. 1897 m. Sarah Wages, dau of Logan Wages; (4) Louanna Stacy b. 1898 m. Elijah Patrick, Jr. d. 1925 in mine accident Perry Co. KY, son of Elijah and Nancy Patrick; (5) Wardie Stacy b. 1900 m. Minnie Rudd, dau of Leander C. Rudd and Eliza Taulbee; (6) Della Stacy b. 1902 d. 1991 m. 1st 1919 to Willie Bowman d. 1925; m. 2nd 1926 to John T. Nunley; (7) Stella Stacy b. 1904 m. Ira Harvey, son of Elijah and Kate Harvey; (8) Preston "Press" Stacy b. 1908 d. 1988 Baltimore, MD m. Becky Mullins; (9) Arvin Stacy b. 1912 d. 1983 m. Della Wages, dau of Hiram and Rebecca Wages and (10) Marvin Stacy b. 19 Jun 1918 d. 1992 in FL m. Grethel Oney, dau of Lawrence and Ora Oney.

Zack was a son of Hugh W. Stacy. Hugh born in 1825 and died in 1889. He was twice married; 1st to Anna Gevedon and secondly to Lucinda Patrick. This family lived in the Johnson Fork area. In 1870 Hugh had two of the children of Allen Dalton in his home: Sarah Dalton age 18 and George Dalton age 16.

Hugh and Anna were the parents of (1) Nancy Emaline Stacy b. 1843 d. 1927 m. 1st 1859 to Winston Lemaster. Winston died as a Prisoner of War in 1865 at Camp Chase, OH. Nancy m. 2nd in 1873 to Thomas Dalton.

(2) Granville (Greenville) Stacy b. 1845 m. 1865 to Gincy Patrick, dau of Brice and Margaret.

(3) Rosaline Stacy b. 1847 d. 1927 OH m. 1st 1872 to Solomon Reed; m. 2nd before 1880 to George Meadows, son of Tyra Meadows and Nancy Barker.

(4) Alden Stacy b. 1849 d. 23 Dec 1854 (Morgan Co. KY Vital Statistics).

(5) William R. Stacy b. 1857 (Morgan Co. Vital Statistics) m. Sarah Frances "Fanny" Williams. They had children Bertha, Retta, Miles, Lizzie and Eunice.

There is no longer a record of Hugh Stacy’s first wife Anna Gevedon after the 1860s. The 1870 Magoffin census shows him married to Lucinda Patrick b. 1844, dau of Hugh and Mary Patrick. It is believed the following were their children:

(6) Margaret Stacy b. 1864 m. 1886 to David Rudd b. 1862 d. 1933, son of James Harvey Rudd and Dorcas Payne. David was a Magoffin County jailer. Margaret is listed in the Middletown, OH census at age 75 in the home of their son John Rudd. She died in 1946.

(7) Robert Stacy b. 1867 m. 1884 in Magoffin Co. KY to Mary Patrick. They lived in Menifee County, KY in 1900 and in Montgomery Co. KY in 1910.

(8) George W. Stacy b. 1869 d. 1959 m. 1887 in Magoffin Co. to Jennie Smith. They lived in Magoffin in 1900 and in Morgan County in 1910.

(9) Kirby Stacy b. 1871 m. 1st in 1890 Magoffin County to Mary Caroline Rudd, dau of James Harvey Rudd and Louellen Wilson. They still lived on Johnsons Fork in 1940.

(10) Mary Belle Stacy b. 1873 d. 1958 Stanton, KY (buried Hazel Green, KY) m. 1888 in Magoffin County to Sam R. Lykins b. 1867 d. 1964.

(11) Zachariah Stacy m. Rosa Belle Coffee (see their family info above).

(12) Thomas J. Stacy b. 1877, enlisted in the Army in 1898, died at age 33 in 1911 of TB contracted in the Philippines while in the Army (buried in Magoffin County).

Thomas J., his parents Hugh and Lucinda Stacy, are buried in the Stacy/Rudd Cem., Left Hand Fork of Grape Creek, Magoffin County.

Hugh Stacy was one of children of Mashack Stacy, Jr. who settled in Morgan County before 1830 and received land grants on Caney Creek.

Mashack Stacy was born about 1792 in Hawkins Co. TN to Mashack Stacy, Sr. and Agnes. Mashack Jr. married in 1815 Scott Co. VA to Violet Barker b. 1796 NC d. 1882 Stacy Fork of Morgan Co. KY, dau of John M. Barker and Jane Ewing. Besides Hugh Stacy, the following are also believed to be their children: Lucinda Bailey, Sylvia Ferguson, Henderson Stacy, Laura Haney, Eunice Stacy, and Rose Evaline Lykins Gevedon.

Any additional and/or corrected info is very welcome.
