This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the December 1, 2016 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We are preparing for the Opening Ceremony of the Salyersville Home Town Christmas celebration scheduled for this coming Saturday afternoon beginning at 4:30. Lots of activities are planned throughout the town culminating with an amazing parade scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. You and your family are invited to come and enjoy the festivities.

Our town of Salyersville continues to draw visitors who have the surname "Salyer" in their ancestry. Recently we had Susan Akin of California whose family had stopped in Lexington while on a trip. They made a detour from Lexington to come to Salyersville. Susan knew that her grandmother’s family were natives of Magoffin County who had moved west in early years. Susan did not know any info about her except that she was related to Farmer Holliday’s wife.

We looked at the family of Farmer Holliday and found that he had died 31 Oct 1943 at Swampton, KY, the son of Jilson Holliday and Rachel Cox. His wife was Emma Salyer who was born in 1871 and died in 1962, a dau of John Morgan "Ferryman" Salyer and Evaline Jackson.

Searching through the family of John M. and Evaline, we found that they had a son Lee Salyer who had gone west. He was age 14 in the 1880 Magoffin County household of his parents. By 1900 R. L. Salyer lived in Hunt County, TX and was listed as age 33. His wife's name was Mary, she was born about 1878, and they had two children (both born in Texas), Carrie B. Salyer b. 1895 and Arthur Salyer b. Jul 1899.

The 1910 census shows Robert L. and Mary Salyer living in Bryan County, OK. In addition to Carrie and Arthur they had two other children Martin V. Salyer b. 1905 OK and Willie G. Salyer b. 1908 OK. We did not find a 1920 census listing for the family but we located "Lee R. Salyer" in the Imperial Co. CA census of 1930. He was age 64, a widower, born in Kentucky. In his home were his son Martin V. Salyer age 24 with wife Ester and dau Earline, a dau Aline C. Salyer b. 1912, a dau Robnia Salyer b. 1914, and a son Joseph Salyer b. 1911. By 1930 "Lee Salyer" was age 75 and lived in the home of Ruth Donnell, age 46, widow. Also in the home was a "Belle Salyer" also age 75.

Susan knew her grandmother's name as Irene Coy Salyer, the census taker recorded it as "Aline C." in 1930.

Lee Salyer married on 26 Aug 1894 in Collin, TX to Mary Catherine Stone b. 1875 TN and died 1918 in TX. Lee (variously recorded as "Lee", "Lee R." "Robert Lee") and his wife were the parents of Carrie Belle Salyer, Arthur Paul Salyer (and a twin brother who died at birth), Evey Salyer, Vernon Salyer, Martin Van Buren Salyer, Willie George Salyer, Joe Lawrence Salyer, twin daughters Ilene Coy Salyer and Irene Toy Salyer, and Robnia Lee Salyer.

We look forward to hearing back from this family.

Another Salyer descendant to visit our town and historical society lives in Oregon. They were also on a trip and stopped in Huntington, West Virginia. Our visitor said he had always wanted to visit Salyersville since he was about 8 or 9 years old and decided to do so while he was this close to our county. He enjoyed seeing the Salyer name on our family monuments and in various places through the town and took many pictures while he was here. He promised we would be hearing back from him after completing his trip.

Rosie Howard came in to our library to research her family. Her father Lonzie Howard was a son of Jesse Howard (b. 1858 Morgan Co. KY-d. 1940 Leatha, KY) and Elizabeth Rigsby (b. 1868 Lawrence Co. KY- d. 1941 Leatha, KY). Jesse was a son of Thomas Howard and Mary Ann Sturgill. Elizabeth was a daughter of Henry Rigsby and Nancy Skaggs. Henry Rigsby was born in 1834 Lawrence Co. KY. He married there on 16 Jan 1853 to Nancy Skaggs, a daughter of Peter Skaggs and Clarinda Prince.

Rosie’s mother Pearlie Tackett Howard was a daughter of James Monroe Tackett (usually known as "Monroe") and his 2nd wife Laura Jenkins.

Monroe Tackett was born 10 Oct 1868 Flat Fork, KY, son of William J. Tackett and Lydia Margaret Adams. William J. was born 1844 and d. 1915, a son of Levi and Susannah Tackett. William J. married in 1865 to Lydia Margaret Adams. She was born in 1846 to Jackson Adams and Galathia Reffitt. Jackson Adams was a son of Daniel Adams and grandson of Stephen Adams.

Monroe’s wife Laura Jenkins was born about 1878/1879 to Francis Marion Jenkins and Cynthia Howard. In the 1910 Magoffin Co. KY census, Laura reported having two living children of 6 born. These children were James E. Tackett b. 1898 and Rosie’s mother Pearlie Tackett Howard b. 1906.

Francis Marion Jenkins was born in 1854, a son of William M. Jenkins and Sarah Montgomery. He and Cynthia were married 27 Nov 1872 in Magoffin Co. KY. She was a dau of Henry Howard and Elizabeth Ann Phipps.

Several of Rosie’s family lines have been recorded in the Magoffin County Historical Society’s family history publications.

We are always in need of family genealogy, stories and pictures for our quarterly Journal. The Journal is mailed to members. The fee is $15 for a calendar year and we are now receiving memberships for the year 2017. Our mailing address is Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465.
