This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the September 29, 2016 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

The Salyersville Independent

We were pleased to have Tony Adkins of the Morgan County Historical Society along with Julia McKenzie Elam of West Liberty, KY among those attending the meeting of the Magoffin County Historical Society on Sunday, September 18th. They came to say hello to Todd and to buy a Journal Index. Julia is a long time contributor to our publications, including the quarterly Journal, our Life Along the Licking book series and other genealogy books. Right now she is very interested in finding info about Malinda or Belinda Davis who was born in 1807 and married in 1826 to Caleb Williams b. 1809. She would like to know if Malinda was a daughter of Matthew Davis or another Davis family. Please contact us at [email protected] or write Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 if anyone has any information that we can relay to Julia.

Two other visitors to our meeting were Tom and Gloria (Lykins) Hill of Staffordsville, KY. Gloria has many Magoffin County ancestors. Her Lykins grandparents were Ollie Clay Lykins (b. 1900 d. 1965) and Maggie Penix. Ollie Clay was a son of Henry Lykins and Elizabeth Gay Asbury.

Henry Lykins was a son of Joseph C. Lykins and Frances Hardy.

Henry Lykins’ wife Elizabeth was a dau of Thomas Asbury and Cordelia Tudd.

Ollie Clay Lykins’ wife Maggie was a dau of Monroe Penix and Sarah E. Conley. Monroe was a son of Civil War Union soldier Allen Penix and Susan Conley. Allen Penix was born in 1841, a son of Henry Penix and Rachel Jenkins. Allen’s first wife Susannah Conley was born in 1846 Elliott Co. KY, a dau of Henry and Nancy Conley.

Monroe and Sarah (Conley) Penix were the parents of these children: (1) Warren Penix m. Nora Cooper, (2) Myrtle Penix m. Charlie Blanton, (3) Maggie m. Ollie Clay Lykins (see above), (4) Maddie Penix m. James Joseph, (5) Raleigh Penix b. 1909 d. 1983, (6) Bradie Penix b. 1911, (7) Addie Penix b. 1914 and (8) Will Penix b. 1916 d. 1969.

Monroe Penix’s wife Sarah was a dau of Wallace Conley and Amanda Reed.

Wallace B. Conley (b. 1836 per the 1850 Morgan Co. census) d. 1920 was married to Amanda Reed in 1866, she was a dau of Mason Reed and Sarah Caudill. Wallace was a son of Edmond Conley and Jane Pelphrey.

Our visitor Gloria’s maternal grandparents were Jasper Miller and Polly Cole. Jasper was a son of John Miller and Sylvania Owens. John was a son of Samuel Miller, Jr. and Arty Bailey. John’s wife Sylvania was a dau of James Owens and Malinda Wireman.

Polly Cole Miller was a dau of Miles Cole and his third wife Kate Marshall. Miles was a son of Dial Cole and Rebecca Mary Fletcher. Miles’ wife Kate was a dau of George Washington Marshall and Nancy Holbrook.

All three of Miles Cole’s marriages were in Magoffin County. His first wife was Polly Bailey; they were married in 1876; his second wife whom he married in 1885 was Laura Watkins. Miles and Kate Marshall were married in 1897. Miles Cole is buried on the John Bailey Cemetery at Tip Top, KY next to his first wife Polly. He was born in 1857 and died in 1912. Laura Watkins Cole is also buried there and it is possible Kate Marshall is also.

Gloria would like to know the definite burial site of Miles Cole’s 3rd wife, Kate "Katie" Marshall. Please help us locate this cemetery for Gloria.

Dial Cole was born in 1836 to John Cole and Catherine Minix. His wife Rebecca Fletcher’s parents were George Fletcher and Louisa Marshall. Dial and Rebecca are buried in the Williams Cemetery at Carver, KY.

Lee Wonnacott of North Carolina was traveling by motorcycle and stopped by our historical society on the 16th of this month. His goal is to document at least one veteran’s memorial in each of the 3,509 counties of the lower 48 states. His progress can be checked at the website: www.ridearoundamerica.com.

We received an email from the niece of Gladys Howard Spradling and Callie Conley (daughters of Paris Long and Ethel Ferguson). Gladys and Callie were valued friends, contributors and supporters of our historical society. They lived in Florida during their last years but always stayed interested in their Magoffin County roots and helped us in many ways. Their niece, Janie Long Manning is associated with a small company that has been selected as a vendor of historically inspired jewelry at the National Museum for African-American Art.
