This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the September 8, 2016 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

The Salyersville Independent
P. O. Box 29, Salyersville, KY 41465. Telephone (606) 349-2915.  Yearly subscription rates are $24.00 in Kentucky and $32.00 per year out of state.

We have been spending much time organizing the stories and pictures in our People, Places and Events book. This is going to be a two-volume set of books. This material was collected from our readers during 2010 in celebration of Magoffin County’s 150th birthday. The typing had been completed for the books but we saw the need to organize the material by subjects. While working on the book we came across a story by Vera Connelley Stamper about her Connelley ancestors which ended with the following quote: "I would urge each reader to record memories about your family. With the passing of each generation, valuable history is lost if someone doesn’t take time to write it down. I think it is really important to write our memories/history and pass it to our children."

We always encourage visitors who come to our historical society to write about their family history and share it with us. Even though we have helped others with area family research since the mid-1970’s we find so much that still needs to be recorded.

We hope Mrs. Stamper’s message will encourage you to write about the memories you have of your ancestors and, if you do, perhaps you will share them with the Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465. We are located at 191 South Church Street in Salyersville.

In the August 11th Historical Comments column we had some info on the Jack and Martha (Holbrook) Jackson family at the request of Cheryl S. Elkin and Robert M. Jackson. Judy Salyer of Gypsy, KY read the column and provided more help for the original query. In addition, this added info helped in our research of the family of another of our visitors, Jerry Jackson, Jr. of West Liberty, KY.

Jerry is a grandson of Franklin Jackson and Clara Gevedon. Franklin was a son of Carl Jackson and Fannie Williams. Carl was a son of David Smith Jackson (1861-1939 Mize, KY). David S. married 22 Apr 1900 in Morgan Co. KY to Julia Cecil.

David S. was a brother of Jackie Lee Jackson (b. 1876) who married Martha Holbrook, both being sons of Jack Jackson and Nancy Arnett. Other siblings were Samuel H. Jackson b. 1863, Jane Jackson b. 1864, Menifee Jackson b. 1868 d. 1952 Korea, Menifee Co. KY, and Eveline Jackson b. 1871.

Jack and Nancy Jackson also had a daughter who is listed in the 1857 birth records of Floyd Co. KY. Her name was Phoebe Jackson born June 6th. The following census year (1860) the family was enumerated in Magoffin County with only their son David Smith Jackson in the household. Apparently those listed above were all the children of Jack and Nancy as Nancy reported 6 living children of 7 born to them at the time of the 1900 census.

We do not know the death date of Jack Jackson but it was before 1910 as that Magoffin census lists Nancy Jackson as age 74, widowed, living on Middle Fork, with son Jack Jackson, age 28, in her household.

Some researchers name James Jackson b. 1805 Virginia as the father of Jackson "Jack" Jackson. Some descendants give his mother’s name as Vina Smith.

We believe Jack to be a brother to Evaline Jackson b. 1827 who married John Morgan "Ferryman" Salyer and also to John Jackson b. 1833 who married Mary Ann "Pop" Minix.

Two Vanderpool descendants visited. Their grandparents were Ed Ackers and Harriet Phoebe Vanderpool of Wolfe Co. KY. We did not research the Ackers line but found that Ed’s wife Harriett was a daughter of John C. Vanderpool who was born about 1844/1845 KY (census date) and died in 1924. John C. is buried in what is known as the Rice or Beech Grove Cemetery at Gifford here in Magoffin Co. KY. His gravemarker was recorded with a birthdate of 29 Mar 1838 and d. 13 Dec 1924. He was a Civil War veteran, serving in Co. D, 8th Regiment and also in Co. I, 4th Regiment Infantry. John C. was a son of Joseph G. Vanderpool and Lavina Mann b. about 1823 in Owsley Co. KY.

John C. Vanderpool’s wife was Julia Wormsley b. in 1851 Virginia and died 25 Nov 1915 at Lee City in Wolfe Co. KY. It is said John C. first married Martha Marshall but we did not find a record of this marriage or a census listing of them together.

In 1860 John C. was age 16 in the home of his parents Joseph and Louvina in Owsley Co. KY. We believe he is the 25-year old John Vanderpool in the home of K. N. and Malinda Fletcher in 1870 Magoffin. John C. married 7 Jan 1873 in Morgan Co. KY to Julia Wormsley. By 1880 he and Julia were living in Lawrence Co. KY. We next found them in the 1910 Morgan Co. KY census.

John C.’s father Joseph G. Vanderpool was born in 1824 Lee Co. Virginia. He married Levina Mann on 24 Nov 1842 in Estill Co. KY. She was born in 1823, a daughter of John Mann and Martha "Patsy" Tincher. John Mann was born in 1798 and died in 1860. He and Martha "Patsy" were married in Estill Co. KY on 26 Mar 1821.

Patsy Tincher Mann died at age 79, a widow, on 2 Jan 1878 in Lee Co. Ky. Her death record reports she was born in Clark Co. KY, a daughter of Samuel and Ester Tincher, both born in Virginia.
