This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the AUGUST 6, 2015 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

We had Rose Weston visiting our library from Missouri this week and she has drawn our attention to the family of Jacob Wireman who was born in 1795 Carter Co. TN and married 1st in 1820 Floyd Co. KY to Nancy Oney then m. 2nd in Morgan Co. KY to Mary Fulks. Jacob was one of the three sons (the others being Abraham and John) of John Wierman II who settled in Floyd County before 1810 and is the ancestor of the eastern Kentucky Wireman families.

Son Jacob left Floyd Co. KY prior to 1850 as he appears in the 1850 Morgan Co. census with wife Nancy Oney. He is still in Morgan County in 1860 and listed with 2nd wife Mary Fulks. He and Mary lived at Hazel Green in Wolfe Co. KY in 1870.

Since we compiled the Wireman family books in 1987 we have discovered two additional daughters who can be attributed to the family of Jacob and Nancy. They are Jemima Wireman who married George Hanks and now Elizabeth Wireman who married Benjamin Lemaster.

Jemima Wireman was born about 1828 and married in 1845 Morgan Co. KY to George S. Hanks. He was born about 1817 and died in 1857 Owsley Co. KY.

Jemima and George are in the 1850 Morgan Co. KY census with children Fielding, Jacob and Lydia.

By 1860 Morgan Co. census time, Jemima was listed as age 32 and she was head of household with these children (1) Fielding Hanks age 13, (2) Jackson Hanks age 11, (3) George Hanks age 9, (4) Lydia Hanks age 8 and (5) Jacob Hanks age 7. We don’t understand the discrepancy in the names and ages of the children in these separate census records as only son Fielding was listed at the appropriate age in the 1860 census.

Elizabeth Wireman Lemaster was the ancestor of our visitor and is believed to be a daughter of Jacob and Nancy (Oney) Wireman. Elizabeth was born about 1821 and died in 1898 in Missouri. She married in 1839 Floyd Co. KY to Benjamin Lemaster, son of Elijah Lemaster and Elizabeth Borders. As a widow, Elizabeth Lemasters filed for a Civil War Widow’s pension on 3 July 1891 in Missouri. Her husband Benjamin was a Union soldier in the 25th Indiana Inf., Co. D, 28th Regt.

The children of Elizabeth and Benjamin as ascertained by the 1850 Morgan Co. KY census and the 1860 Amazonia, Missouri census were (1) John Lemaster b. 1842, (2) James Lemaster b. 1843, (3) Jemima Lemaster b. 1844, (4) Elizabeth Lemaster b. 1847, (5) Nancy Lemaster b. 1849 and (6) Elijah Lemaster b. 1851. There may have been other children.

In our search for the above named Wireman’s we found info on a daughter of Jacob and John’s brother, Abraham Wireman. A death record was discovered for Miranda Osborne b. 10 Sep 1818, dau of Abraham Weyerman and Sarah Dean. As a widow, she died 3 Nov 1912 and was buried in Winchester, KY. We had printed some family info in the Fall 2011 issue of our Journal of the Magoffin County Historical Society concerning the descendants of Miranda Wireman and her husband John Stephen Osborne.

In our 37 years as a historical society we have collected and printed much genealogy on the people who settled in Magoffin County and surrounding areas and we are always interested in "adding another piece to the puzzle" so if anyone wishes to send additions and/or corrections to material that we have on any area family, please do so by writing Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email: [email protected])

Another visitor was Manford Wright of West Liberty in neighboring Morgan Co. KY. Mr. Wright was interested in locating info on his grandmother Gilly Ann Montgomery b. 1893 and died 1962. She married George Daniels.

Gilly Ann was a daughter of Isaac "Big Ike" Montgomery (1864-1928) and Lucinda Howard (1866-1897). Big Ike was a son of William Montgomery who married in 1863 to Rebecca Howard, dau of Henry Howard and Elizabeth Cottle.

William Montgomery (b. about 1838) was a son of John J. Montgomery and Letty Howard. His grandparents were Alexander "Sanders" Montgomery and Elizabeth Eddington; also Thomas Howard and Francis Jackson.

William’s wife Rebecca’s grandparents were Thomas and Francis (Jackson) Howard and Joseph and Nancy (Nickell) Cottle.

Big Ike’s first wife Lucinda Howard’s lineage is a little more difficult to research. Richard French is documented as a son of Reubin Howard and wife Nancy Arnett. His grandparents were Thomas and Francis (Jackson) Howard and Reubin and Susan (Kilgore) Arnett.

Richard French Howard’s wife Polina/Perlina or Pauline Howard was born about 1845/1847 and died after 1910. From census records she appears to be a daughter of James and Cynthia Howard. James was born about 1820 and his wife Cynthia was born about 1825. They are listed in the 1850 Morgan Co. KY census with a three-year old Perlina. By 1860 their address is Licking Station, Magoffin Co. KY. Daughter Pauline is age 13. Their other children were William Howard age 10, Harrison Howard age 8, Malissa Howard age 5, Mary Howard age 3 and an unnamed child age 2 months.

Perlina Howard and Richard French Howard had married by the time of the 1870 Magoffin census with these children: Loucinda Howard age 4, Smith Howard age 2 and Louisa Howard age 3 months.

We did not find an 1880 census year listing for them but in the 1900 Magoffin census, Richard F. Howard b. 1838 and wife Poline b. 1846 were in the household of a son Smith Howard age 32 and his 26-year old wife Lillie. Richard French and Poline had been married for 40 years and reported having 4 living children of 5 born.

Richard French Howard was deceased by 1910 as his wife Pauline at age 63 is listed as a widow in her son Smith Howard’s household. Also with her is a daughter Mary Jane "Mollie". Perlina/Poline and her daughter are still in the household of Smith and Lillie Howard in 1920 so it appears Perlina died before the 1930 census year.

This family is said to have been buried in the Howard Family Cemetery at Bloomington, Magoffin Co. KY. More info is requested.

We lost one of Magoffin County’s most dedicated historians last week when Farmer Holliday died on July 24 at the age of 90. He was born 6 May 1925 in McGuffey, OH to Clay Holliday and Lena Rowe. He was married to Virginia Shepherd and they had two daughters, Helen and Donna. Farmer lived near Royalton most of his married life and spend much time delving into the history of the area and copying cemeteries. Farmer was a special person who will be greatly missed.
