This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the MAY 21, 2015 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

Maloyal Crase Borders brought her cousin David Marshall of Winamac, IN to visit our historical society library. His ancestors include Marshall, Holbrook, Jordan, Back, Taulbee, Crase, Davis, Stephens, and Gullett and more. We hope this will help David and others with the same ancestors with their family research. As always, we welcome additions/corrections. Please write Magoffin County Historical Society, PO Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email: [email protected].)

David is the son of the late Earl L. Marshall and Evanoy Crase. His Marshall grandparents were Reuben Ausben/Osborne Marshall b. 1886 and Fannie Belle Back. They were married 21 Aug 1913 in Breathitt Co. KY. Some of this family info came from Donna Marshall Wireman.

Reuben was a son of Anderson Marshall (14 Aug 1856 Floyd Co. KY-13 Nov 1935 Carver, Magoffin Co. KY) and Sarah Jordan. Sarah Jordan was born about 1867 and she and Anderson were married 24 Feb 1884 at the home of Michael Risner in Magoffin Co. KY. Sarah was the first child of Robert Jordan (1844-1923, a Civil War soldier, Co. F, 10th KY Mtd. Inf.) and Naomi "Oma" Hughes. The family is found in the 1880 Magoffin Co. KY census.

Robert Jordan was buried above the Reuben Arnett, Jr. Cem., on Sow Branch of Middle Fork, Magoffin Co. KY. His mother’s name was Sarah. His wife Oma when giving an affidavit for a war widow’s pension after his death said Robert was raised by the Rev. John C. Coburn.

Anderson was a son of Washington Marshall b. 1830 and Nancy Ann Holbrook b. 1833. "Wash" and Nancy were in the household of A. J. and Emily Marshall in the 1900 Magoffin Co. KY census. Washington was a son of Johnson Marshall who was born in Floyd Co. KY and died in Sun City, KS. Johnson was a son of Reuben Marshall and Elizabeth Nolan.

Nancy Holbrook Marshall was a daughter of John Henry Holbrook, son of Randolph Holbrook and Elizabeth Adams. Nancy’s mother was Susannah "Sukie" Back, dau of John Back and Catherine Robinson.

Johnson’s first wife was Basheba Adams b. 1807 Russell Co. KY d. about 1875 in Magoffin Co. KY. She was a daughter of William Adams b. 1770 and Fanny Meacham. When we added a panel to our early founder’s marker in 2014, we included William and Fanny’s family as they are the ancestors of many of our people. It is believed William and Fanny are buried on the Charles Minix Cemetery on Oakley Creek here in Magoffin.

Reuben Marshall’s wife Fannie was born 14 Aug 1898 in Magoffin Co. KY and married first to Charles Banks. She was the daughter of Calloway C. Back (30 Apr 1863-12 Apr 1930) and Mary E. Taulbee (10 Jun 1870-12 Sep 1947).

Calloway was a son of Isaac "Ike" Back (Confederate soldier in 5th KY Regt. in the Civil War). Isaac and Elizabeth Back were married 20 Oct 1854. Elizabeth was born about 1830/32 in Harlan Co. KY, the daughter of Alfred Back and Isabel Caudill. Her husband "Ike" was a son of Solomon Back, Sr. and Jane "Jency" Fields. Solomon was a son of John Back and Catherine Robinson. Jency was a dau of Asa Fields and Rachel Sargent.

Calloway Back’s wife Mary Taulbee (10 Jun 1870 Magoffin Co. KY-12 Sep 1947 Menifee Co. KY) was a daughter of James Taulbee and Hannah Burton, according to her death certificate. Mary died in Menifee County, KY but was buried on the Ike Back Cemetery in Breathitt Co. KY alongside her husband Calloway.

Now we will try to give some info on David Marshall’s maternal line. His grandparents were Nathan "Tick" Crase b. 1896 d. 1967, son of Thomas Crase and Amilda Davis. Thomas was born about 1870 in Floyd Co. KY and died at Wheelrim in Morgan Co. KY. He was a son of Alfred Crase and Emily J. Elam.

Thomas’ wife "Milda" Davis was born in 1873, we believe in Clay Co. KY, and died 21 Oct 1934 in Morgan Co. KY. She was the daughter of Letcher Davis (b. 1850-d. 1919) and Nancy Bowling b. 1849. Letcher was a son of Hiram Davis and Patsy Edwards. We have not identified Nancy Bowling’s parents at this time.

Nathan Crace’s wife was Maude Belle Stephens. They were well known here in our area as they operated a restaurant on Rt. 7 just outside of Salyersville, KY. Maud was a dau of Adam D. Stephens (1869-1891) and Mary Magdaline Back (17 Jan 1873-22 Dec 1950).

Adam Stephens’ parents were William Stephens (18 Aug 1843-25 Jul 1920) and Nancy Jane Gullett (4 Dec 1843-4 Jun 1923). William was the son of George Stephens and Elizabeth "Betsy" Alsept. Nancy Jane was a dau of Ezekiel Gullett and Eleanor Roberts.

Mary Back Stephens’ parents were James Daniel "Licking Jim" Back (b. 1851 Breathitt Co. KY) and his first wife Mary Ann "Polly" Crace whom he married in 1870 Morgan Co. KY. Polly Crace was a dau of Henry Crace and Elizabeth May.

Polly Crace Back died of TB in 1911 and "Licking Jim" married 2nd to Margaret Whitaker Dunn. His 3rd wife was Minerva "Minnie" Bailey, dau of Kennis F. Bailey and Lou Ellen Arnett.

Much of the Back family material came from the research of the late David Risner. David told that "Licking Jim", according to family legend, had a stroke while riding horseback and died a few days later on 3 Oct 1925 at his home known as White Pine on Middle Fork, Magoffin Co. KY.

Licking Jim was a son of Lewis Back (born 1807 Russell Co. VA-15 Jan 1891) and Margaret "Peggy" Roberts (10 Nov 1810 NC-17 Mar 1889) who were married in 1826 Gladesville, VA. Lewis was a son of John Back and Catherine Robinson. Peggy Roberts Back was a dau of Moses Roberts and Polly King.
