This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the March 8, 2012 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

In case you haven’t heard the news yet, the MARSHALL family is being honored with our 34th annual Magoffin County Founders Day celebration this coming Labor Day (August 28 through September 3) here in Salyersville.  In reviewing the material that we have on the Marshall family it appears this will be our biggest ever!  It seems every family in Magoffin has some ties to the Marshall family even if they are not direct descendants.  We have started file boxes to receive material, a virtual box on the computer and a real box in our office!  Some people have already sent in some pictures and we are happy to receive these.

Apparently all the branches of the Marshall family in our area shares the same ancestor, that being Thomas Marshall and his wife Sarah Johnson.  We do not know much about them and only have the name of one of their children.  Reuben Marshall was born in 1781 Virginia and died on 7 July 1853 in Floyd Co. KY, a section that became

Magoffin County in 1860.  Reuben was married to Elizabeth Nolan.  Reuben and Elizabeth show in the 1850 census of Floyd County, KY and their near neighbors were William and Fanny Adams, Charles Minix, Sr., Charles Jr. and Margaret (Patrick) Minix, Mason and Polly (Barnett) Marshall so it appears they were on Oakley Creek near Royalton, KY.

After Reuben’s death, his wife Elizabeth, at age 76 in the Magoffin 1860 census and giving birthplace as SC, was living in the household of her daughter Louisa Marshall and her husband George Fletcher.  Their near neighbors were Thomas and Rebecca Prater, Madison and Alsey Blanton, Reuben and Catherine (Holbrook) Marshall, Hiram and Rose Walters, Gilbert and Perlina (Prater) Adams.

Would anyone have any information as to the possible burial sites of Reuben and Elizabeth?

We want to give a short listing of their children and their families so you can see how you might be related: (1) Hugh Marshall b. 1801 married Mary Elliott. They are in the 1850 Floyd census.  (2) Louisa Marshall (sometimes spelled Levisa) b. 1802 married George Fletcher.  (3) Nancy Marshall b. 1807 m. Jeremiah Patrick.  (4) Johnson Marshall b. 1809 m. Basheba Adams.  (5) Agnes Marshall b. 1812 m. Edward Poe.  (6) James Marshall b. 1813 m. Matilda Adams.  (7) George Marshall b. 1814 m. Elizabeth Howard.  (8) Reuben Ansen Marshall b. 1816 m. Catherine Holbrook.  (9) Mary Ann Marshall b. 1820 m. Jacob Risner.  (10) Elizabeth Marshall b. 1822 m. Joel Adams.  (11) Mason Marshall b. 1823 m. Mary “Polly” Barnett.  (12) William Marshall m. Matilda Patrick and (13) Louraney Marshall m. 1st -?- Fletcher and m. 2nd to James O. Whitaker.

In addition to working on this family we are also attempting to find information for those who send in their family queries.  One such came from Charles Wolfenbarger ([email protected]) who wrote that his mother was Geneva Patrick, daughter of Joseph Patrick and Lela Patrick.  Joseph was a son of Dean Patrick and Lula Davis.  He would like any information on these families.

In the 1910 Magoffin census, Dean Patrick is listed as being age 23 (b. 1887).  His wife Loula was age 21 and they had three children Lavina Patrick age 6, Cora Patrick age 2 and Lela Dora Patrick age 10 months.

By 1920 the family was listed thusly: Lula Davis Patrick, widow, with children Louisa Patrick age 15, Cora Patrick age 14, Dora Patrick age 6, Joseph Patrick age 1-1/2, and Gethel Patrick.

In the 1930 Magoffin census, Lula Davis was age 41 and head of household was Jim Kilgore age 51.  Also in the household were Dora, Joe F., Garthel, Elza, Margaret and Kasa.

According to Magoffin marriages, Jim Kilgore at age 43, born in Floyd Co. KY, married Lula Patrick age 28.  Jim’s mother was given as Cynthia Kilgore and Lula parents were Joe Marsh Davis and Celia Kilgore.

Loula Davis b. 1888 was a daughter of Joseph M. Davis and Celia Alsept. Celia was born in 1869, a daughter of Robert Alsept b. 1828.  Robert was a Civil War soldier, Pvt. Co. D, 45th KY Mtd. Inf.  His father was Henry “Hen” Patrick.

Robert Alsept (Patrick) married Jane Risner b. 1900, a daughter of Michael Risner.

I have a correction to last week’s column on the Marshall family.  I mistakenly wrote that Reuben Ansen Marshall was the father of Elizabeth Marshall who married Joel Adams when he was actually her brother.  Reuben Ansen and Elizabeth were children of Reuben and Elizabeth (Nolan) Marshall.

Anyone wishing to write may do so by email at [email protected] or sending a letter to Magoffin County Historical Society, Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465.
