This article, written by Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the January 19, 2012 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

The Salyersville Independent
P. O. Box 29, Salyersville, KY 41465. Telephone (606) 349-2915.  Yearly subscription rates are $24.00 in Kentucky and $32.00 per year out of state.

Last Tuesday was a good day to be outside after being cooped up for a few days.  Bobby Davis came to visit and we went looking at a few cemeteries nearby.  Bobby was looking for some of his Collinsworth kinsmen so we first went to Mash Fork to the Powers/Collinsworth Cemetery and thence to Brush Fork of Lick Creek to visit the Tommy Cooper Cemetery.  From there we traveled on up to the Adams and Collinsworth Cemetery.

Rollie Collinsworth b. 1895 d. 1973, a World War One veteran is buried in the Adams/Collinsworth Cemetery as well as William Q. Adams, GiGi Gullett and Ethel M. Adams (1919-1969), daughter of Taylor Conley.

Rollie was a son of Riley Collinsworth and Eveline Vanderpool.  Riley was the son of George Washington Collinsworth and Jemima Burke.  Eveline was the daughter of John M. Vanderpool and Nancy Hoskins.  This cemetery has moss growing over it so there are no weeds!

Bobby and I also visited the Tackett Cemetery where Taylor Caldwell, his wife America Collinsworth and their children are buried. Their known children were Winford Caldwell, Hendrix Caldwell, and Markus Caldwell.  Bobby would like to contact anyone with more information on this family, particularly some of their kinfolks.  America died at age 52 in 1947 probably from complications in childbirth, her last child lived 20 days, dying 2 days before she did.

If anyone has any information to share on the Caldwell family, please contact Bobby Davis at HC 77, Box 200-4, Salyersville, KY 41465 or email Bobby at [email protected]

A query has come our way from Steve and Daisy Carter ([email protected]) concerning the family of Farish Howard.

Farish Howard was born in 1872 and is interred in the Bays Cemetery on Buffalo Creek of Lick Creek here in Magoffin County.  He was a son of Andrew Jack Howard (b. 1858) and Mary Howard.

Andrew Jack Howard was a son of Henry Howard and a grandson of Thomas Howard and Elizabeth Cottle.  Elizabeth Cottle was born in 1817, the daughter of Jackson Cottle (b. 1767 VA) and his wife Nancy Nickle.  Nancy was the daughter of Isaac Nickle (b. 1751) and Margaret Curry (b. 1755).

Andrew Jack Howard’s wife Mary was a daughter of Jim Howard b. 1825.

Farish Howard married Risby Blankenship b. 2 Feb 1879.  Their daughter Mayzania married Lester Ward, son of Raymond Crow Ward and Louisa Howard.

Last week, we mistakenly wrote that we had placed a marker for “Reuben Patrick” in the Meredith Patrick Cemetery.  The marker was actually for “William” Patrick and Molly Reins. We hope this error did not cause anyone any problems.

We had an enjoyable visit with George Steele of Dawson Springs, KY last week.  He and his wife Carol have been members of our historical society many years.  George was a graduate of the Salyersville Grade School class of 1957/1958.  Some of his classmates were G. V. Joseph, Jr., Eddie McFarland, Jerry Rice, Delbert Bailey, Charles Marshall and many others.

The first monthly meeting of our historical society was held on January 15th.  The February meeting will be Sunday, Feb 19th at 2 p.m. at our library here on South Church Street.  We invite you to come meet with us on that day.

With the month of January already half gone we are working on unfinished projects and working up new ones at the same time.  We are in need of people with ideas on activities that need to be done and we especially need people who will help us carry those plans to completion.

Come in to visit us here at 191 South Church Street in Salyersville, write us at Box 222, Salyersville, KY 41465 (email [email protected]) or telephone 606-349-1607.  Thanks for your interest in the Magoffin County Historical Society.
