This article, written by Todd Preston, the president of the Magoffin County Historical Society, was taken from the July 6, 2006 issue of THE SALYERSVILLE INDEPENDENT newspaper.

The Salyersville Independent is a weekly newspaper published and edited every Thursday. For inquires or comments, please write to , P. O. Box 29, Salyersville, KY 41465. Yearly subscription rates are $22.00 in Kentucky and $26.00 per year out of state.

We have had a very busy week in and around the home-twenty so I've had to curtail some of the “field trips” of previous weeks.   Our visitors and Pioneer Village tours have increased considerably and I might add, the veteran's information coming in has increased at this eleventh hour, plus we've been covered up with queries.   I want to remind you when sending queries to please, please try to include dates and as much info as you know as that would help us get started on your ancestor chart.

On Thursday I accompanied Ritt Mortimer to Mrs. Nancy Bays' home to film the exhibit she and her brother-in-law Orville Risner have put together. It consists of small buildings, home, barn, outhouse, etc. made out of square (2X2-inch) tobacco sticks and filled with small people, cows, chickens, horses and about anything else you would expect on a farm.

Ritt is going to show this on Channel 7 or Howard's Cable.  After a bit of hinting, they consented to let us display it here at the historical society during Founder's Days so I will be looking for a proper place as we would want to keep it in a glassed-in enclosure and under lock and key. If you miss seeing this on Channel 7, it can also be seen at the Keith Bays homeplace on far Middle Fork.  I would suggest that you call first.

There have been several inquiries about the parents of Mycha/Micha Lemaster b. ca. 1825 who married in 1846 to James Fleming Amyx b. 1823.   The latest query is from Eliza Sellards Copley (eacopley99 @aol.com) who writes that their dau Sophia Jane Amyx born about 1849 is found in the 1850 Morgan Co. KY census: James F. Amyx age 27, Mycha? Age 25, Mary age 2, Sophia age 1, Simpson Adams age 10.   The 1830 and 1840 Morgan County records indicate that Elijah Lemaster could be the father of Micha Lemaster with Ambrose Lemaster a second possibility. Anyone with any info is urged to contact us.

Mary Jo Bailey, a gr/granddaughter of Wallace White Bailey and Elizabeth Stapleton inquired about Elizabeth 's parents. She was the dau of John Stapleton and Margaret “Peggy” Salyer b. 1835. Peggy was a dau of William Salyer and a gr/dau of Zachariah Salyer, Jr.

The 1850 Scott Co. VA census lists Thomas Stapleton age 50, Elizabeth age 45, John age 21, Isaac age 15, Elizabeth age 13, Anderson age 11, Rebecca J. age 9, James H. age 7, Didema age 6, Sally age 4.

So John (age 21) is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stapleton. This Elizabeth Salyer Stapleton age 66 (b. 1814) is shown in the 1880 Elliott Co. KY census with her child Eliza who married Frank Salyer.

Carrie Nelson (carri1027 @yahoo.com) found in one of our columns that John Wesley Baldridge married Ellen Baldridge and wondered who Ellen's mother was. John Baldridge married Martha Elizabeth Gillum, commonly known as “Mattie” Gillum.

Dennis “D. B.” Patrick married first Mary Salyer and m. 2 nd Permelia Patrick b. 1869. She was the dau of John Wesley Patrick b. 1836 and Abigail Salyer b. 1837. Abigail was the dau of Jacob Salyer and gr/dau of Zachariah Salyer.

Jacob Salyer married Neucarious Rowland b. 1808 Lee Co. VA, dau of Elizabeth Rowland.

War veteran) and Letty Melson.

James Webb was a son of John Webb, Jr. and Mary Boone, a sister to Squire Boone. They were children of Daniel Boone.

Jack Allen of 183 Garcia Ave. , San Leandro , CA 94577 was a recent visitor.   He is a son of William Allen b. 1921 who m. 1. Jessie Casebolt and m. 2 nd to Norma Lee Sims. This William b. 1921 was the son of William “Bill” Allen b. 1890, a gr/son of James Allen b. 1864 and Mariah Smith b. 1861.

Any help on these Allens or Jesse Casebolt would be appreciated.

Sara Jo Farley, 5971 Steubenville Pike, McKees Rocks, PA 15135-1314 writes she has been wondering what happened to Biddy (Prater) Adams, first wife of Wiley D. Adams.

Wiley D. Adams b. 1828 m. in 1847 to Biddy Prater b. 1830 d. 1860, dau of William Prater b. 1787 VA.   William married 7 Aug 1811 in Floyd Co. KY to Obedience Prater b. 1794 VA.

Mary Jane Adams b. 1849, dau of Wiley D. Adams and Biddy Prater, married 7 Nov 1866 to Alexander Bailey b. 1847, son of Wallace Bailey and Mary Patrick.

Would anyone know the burial site for Biddy Prater Adams?

Jack May Jr. (mayjr @snoglobal.nt) talked with Edna Mae Rice Dunn, a dau of Payne and Ethel (May) Rice and she told him I may know of the burial site of James Frank May and Amanda Pace May.   He also wants to find the gravesites of James Lewis and Louisa (Patrick) May's gravesites.

The Frank May Cemetery is across from the homeplace. The chimney is no longer standing and only the water well site is visible.   John Pace built a house a bit downstream, we located and sort of cleaned it up and marked it. John is skeptical if it is the May Cemetery but I'm convinced it is.

The James Lewis May Cemetery is on Burning Fork Creek, now known as “Old” Burning Fork Road , located behind the Jack Rice Cemetery . It was in an abandoned condition when I visited it and the Frank May Cemetery in 1977 and is in the same condition, I'll have to admit.   I have misplaced the coordinates readings of both cemeteries and invite Jack May Jr. to visit and I will take him to both cemeteries.
