The Civil War ended slavery in 1865 so this is the first census taken when all citizens were totally free. Mercer County and Harrodsburg had always had a large number of "free blacks".
In all cases the micro-film should be used for research and to obtain the further information given to the census taker. This transcription should only be considered a guide.
This list contains only those listed as Black or Mulatto.

This District is in the most southwestern section of Mercer Co., bordering on the south & west by the boundaries of Boyle County & Washington County, on the north by District #8 & east by District #6. The eastern border is not far from Rose Hill Post Office in Dist. #6.
It includes the Post Offices of Nevada (on the Boyle Co., border) and Stewart (in the most southwestern part of Mercer not far from the Washington Co., border). The Chaplin River runs north to south through this district. Some communities are Battle, possibly Gastonia which is known to be near Rose Hill. There were a total of 132 households in this district.

It is located in western Mercer Co, bordered on the west by Washington Co., Ky., on the north by District #3 Duncansville, on the east by District #5 one of the Harrodsburg Districts (with Bohon P.O. nearby)and on the south by District #8.
The only Post Office is Cornishville. The Chaplin River runs through this district.
