BADGER GIBSON Surnames: BADGER, GIBSON, HALE #00067 Birchell Coslow <[email protected]> Sat, 13 Dec 1997 I'm attempting to locate parents, siblings, and any other available data pertaining to my gggg-grandparents, Joshua BADGER and Sabra GIBSON. Their daughter, Louisana Gibson (b. ca 1800 Wilkes Co. NC -- d. ca 1848 Mercer Co. KY) married John W. Hale in Mercer Co. KY on Nov 28, 1820 (or Apr 2, 1821 - the marriage was apparently registered twice); bondsman was Joshua Badger. It has been oral family tradition for at least four generations that a female ancestor of the Hale line was "half-Indian and half-Spanish." Through the elimination process, Louisana Badger has been identified as the person in question. My (now) 90 year-old aunt told me years ago that her mother told her during her childhood that this ancestor "came from the Black Dutch," a term she did not understand, but which refers to the mysterious Melungeon folk of southern Appalachia currently in genealogical vogue. My guess is that Joshua Badger was probably Cherokee, and that Sabra Gibson was Melungeon (taken to be Spanish at the time). In any event, I am told that Gibson is a common surname among the Melungeons. I'd appreciate any light anyone can shed for me in this genealogical thicket. Thanks!!
