BADGER GIBSON
Surnames: BADGER, GIBSON, HALE#00067
Birchell Coslow <[email protected]> Sat, 13 Dec 1997
I'm attempting to locate parents, siblings, and any other available data pertaining to my gggg-grandparents, Joshua BADGER and Sabra GIBSON. Their daughter, Louisana Gibson (b. ca 1800 Wilkes Co. NC -- d. ca 1848 Mercer Co. KY) married John W. Hale in Mercer Co. KY on Nov 28, 1820 (or Apr 2, 1821 - the marriage was apparently registered twice); bondsman was Joshua Badger. It has been oral family tradition for at least four generations that a female ancestor of the Hale line was "half-Indian and half-Spanish." Through the elimination process, Louisana Badger has been identified as the person in question. My (now) 90 year-old aunt told me years ago that her mother told her during her childhood that this ancestor "came from the Black Dutch," a term she did not understand, but which refers to the mysterious Melungeon folk of southern Appalachia currently in genealogical vogue. My guess is that Joshua Badger was probably Cherokee, and that Sabra Gibson was Melungeon (taken to be Spanish at the time). In any event, I am told that Gibson is a common surname among the Melungeons. I'd appreciate any light anyone can shed for me in this genealogical thicket. Thanks!!

Hi Gerald,

If you haven't already discovered all of the resources available at MERCER COUNTY you might want to have a look at the Powell Hart page. http://w3.one.net/~durp/index.htm. This will put you in touch with Fleta Aday, who has researched the Powel, Powell line extensively. The names you are searching do appear in the "New" Bible Records and Vital Statistics," 1997 Compiled by Alma Ray Sanders Ison and James H. Miller. Happy Hunting.

I don't have a Henry Jr. in my database, but I do have a Henry. He's my 5g-grandfather (I'm descended through his dau Elizabeth b. bef 1799, who m. George R. Nield; 1820 Mercer Co.). Perhaps your Henry and my Elizabeth are siblings???

Most of the information that I have on Henry Sr. (if that be the case) came from Deb Skoff. Here's a clip from her message:

Subject: Genealogy--FRENCH surname

According to my sources, Henry FRENCH was born 12 Mar 1755. He was married to Elizabeth ERSOM about 1770. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He and his wife came to America about 1770. He died 11 Aug 1821 in Mercer Co., KY. He had at least 9 children. His son, George FRENCH, was married 14 Jun 1804 in Mercer Co. to Elizabeth STURMAN.

You may also want to visit Henry in my database, for other descendants. And if it turns out that we're related, I'd love to hear back from you. The link to my database is below. --Pam

I am desended from Thomas Jennings born Dec 19, 1785 and died in Mercer County, Kentucky on Oct 5, 1844. He was married to Lucinda Tate Phillips (she was married to a Baskett before). Lucinda gave birth to a girl in November she name the child Thomas Alison Jennings. This girl is my 3 great grandmother. Family tradition has her to be a cousin to William Jennings Bryan. I am betting that Thomas and your Nancy are brother and sister. Let me know if this helps. Jeff

I do not have much on Nancy JENNINGS. She reportedly was b. c1784, so it is very possible that she and Thomas were related. Nancy's father (according to another researcher) was William JENNINGS. On 09 May 1803 in Mercer County, she md/1 Mark GEE, who died in 1811. Nancy later moved with her children (John, Martha, Rhoda and Josiah GEE) to Washington Co., IN, where she md/2 David RUTHERFORD, 22 Feb 1818. She disappears from the records after the 1820 US census. I am researching my African-American ancestors who were married in Harrodsburg, Kentucky about 1875 or 1876. Caroline Imes, born about 1847 in Washington County, PA, graduated from Oberlin Preparatory School in 1874 and married Rev. Peter Johnson thereafter. They apparently moved to Topeka, Kansas, had 5 unknown children. Caroline died about 1806. Would love for someone to look for a marriage record or to hear from anyone with information about this couple. Many thanks.

Hi Joyce (and any other Yocum researchers!),

Greg Brown has a wonderful page up dedicated to Yoakam / Yokum / Yocum research. You'll find it at the URL below.

Also, there is a Yocum Surname Mailing List. You can sub by sending a message to . 'subscribe' should be the only thing in the body (without the quotes, of course), and be sure to turn off your signature file, if you have one.

Hopefully, you'll get your answer here, but if not, I'd be sure to check out the two items above.

Best of Luck to you! --Pam
