KINGS
MOUNTAIN — Our mother, Mattie Sims Adams, 97, of Grove Ridge, Kings Mountain,
widow of William Noel Adams, left her earthly home to be with her Lord on
Friday, Sept. 18, 2009.
She
was born Thursday, Jan. 11, 1912, in Lincoln County to the late Everett and Eva
Gastineau Sims. Mattie was a farmer and homemaker, a beautician, a former
employee with Cowden’s Manufacturing in Lancaster and the
Five & Dime Store for Vernon Floyd. She was the oldest living member of Pond
Missionary Baptist Church and will always be remembered for her talent and
passion for making quilts.
Besides
her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sons; Raymond, Floyd,
Lloyd and Frank Adams; and two great-grandsons.
She
is survived by her children, Fama (Dallas “Peanut”) Patterson and Freda
(Mack) Phillippe, both of Kings Mountain, Freeman (Jean) Adams of Lancaster and
Tootsie (Gilbert) Gooch of Waynesburg; a brother, Ray
Sims of Ohio; a sister, Ora Potter of Corpus Christi, Texas; 19 grandchildren;
39 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.
An
Appreciation of Life service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barnett & Demrow
Funeral Home, by Bros. Chester Cornett and Eric Douglas with burial to follow in
Grove Ridge Cemetery.
Visitation
will be 5-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

— Edna Mae Young Bastin, 85, of Stanford died Friday at Fort Logan Hospital.
Born
Feb. 24, 1924, in Lincoln County to the late William Craig Young and Betty Ann
Hutchinson Young, she was the widow of Lawrence B. Bastin. She worked in the
kitchen at Fort Logan Hospital and was a
member of Stanford First Church of God.
Survivors
include three daughters, Hazel Lark and Peggy (Butch) Jenkins, both of Stanford,
and Debbie (Keith) Gamble of Vandergrift, Penn.; three sons, Marion D. (June)
Bastin of Stanford, Gary (Gayle) Bastin of
Danville and Barry (Lori) Bastin of Spartanburg, S.C.; a sister, Bea Poynter of
Stanford; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion Young and William “June”
Young; three sisters, Opal Dawson, Lucille Denham and Christine Burgess; and a
great-grandson, Gary Dwayne Lark II.
A
graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Buffalo Springs Cemetery with
Dr. Harold Harness and the Rev. Johnny Baker officiating.

at Lake Norman Regional Hospital in Mooresville, N.C.
Earl
was the widower of Jackie Leslie Belcher.
Born
Jan. 18, 1946, in Wallins Creek, Ky., he was the son of the late Wylie and Edna
Todd Belcher. He was a retired employee of Jeffboat in Indiana.
Survivors include three daughters, Louann Belcher of Mooresville, N.C., Shirley (Larry) Yeary of Pingleton Gap, Va., and Malia (Jerry) Kite of Castlewood, Va.; four sons, Carl Lee Belcher of Central City, Ky.,

(Patsy) Lasley of Castlewood, Va., Bobby (Teresa) Lasley of Castlewood, Va., and
Gary “Brother” Kiser of Castlewood, Va.; a sister, Louella Kindred of
Cincinnati, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sons, Eddie
“Sput” Kiser; and his mother-in-law, Caroline “Mamie” Lasley.

Jones Dowell, 75, of Crawfordsville, Ind., died Friday, Sept. 18 at her home.

native of Wilburn, she was born Oct. 3, 1933, to the late Velt and Anna Petrey
Jones. She attended school at Wilburn, worked at The Snacker Grill and as a
laundromat attendant, attended Freemont Street
Baptist Church and was the widow of James Dowell.
She
was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Eugene Dowell; brothers, Marvin,
Norman and Oren V. Jones; and sisters, Freda Mae and Irene.

E. Griffin, 72, of Scottsville, died Thursday, Sept. 10 at his residence.
A
native of Crab Orchard, he was the son of the late William Bryant Griffin and
Lola Sumlar Griffin. Griffin was an Army veteran, retired civil service senior
computer programmer with the Marine Corps Logistic
Base, a Master Mason having been raised by Crab Orchard Masonic Lodge #636
F&AM, member of Hasan Shrine Temple in Albany, Ga., where he served as
commander of the Hasan Shrine Legion of Honor in
1986, was Southeastern Shrine Association Commander of the Legions of Honor in
2001-2002, a former associate of Al Hambra Shrine Temple in Chattanooga, Tenn.,
Al Menah Shrine Temple in Nashville, Tenn., and
an honorary member of Jericho Shrine Legion of Honor in Kingsport, Tenn. He also
participated in the Hasan Legion of Honor Color Guard and the Hasan Shrine
Legion of Honor for the wreath laying at the tomb of the
unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.
He
was also preceded in death by one son, Shannon Griffin; and one sister, Jean
Brown.

Harris, 80, of Stanford, died Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Ephraim McDowell Regional
Medical Center in Danville.

native of Pulaski County, he was born May 2, 1929, to the late Nelson and Cloia
Taylor Harris. He a retired machinist at Matthews Conveyor in Danville, member
of Stanford Baptist Church, veteran of the
Korean War and widower of Jewell Harris.
Survivors
include two daughters, Betty (Sam) Blevins and Susan Smith both of Stanford; two
brothers, Harold and Cooper Harris; three sisters, Oveda Broughton, Carol
Coleman and Bessie Henry all of
Stanford; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren; and several nieces

Hugh
Barrett Helm Jr., 83, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Baptist Hospital
East in Louisville.
Born
Monday, Sept. 28, 1925, in Lebanon, Ky., he was a son of the late Hugh Barrett
and Elizabeth Harrison Polk Helm. He was a graduate of Danville High School and
University of Kentucky, owner of
Southern States in Stanford, Hustonville and Garrard County, and part owner of
the mobile home factory and stockyards in Stanford. He also was a farmer, a U.S.
Navy veteran of World War II, a trustee for
Lincoln County National Bank, and a Water Commission board member. He taught
agriculture to veterans at Stanford High School, helped start the Pioneer
Opportunity Workshop in Danville and was a member,
deacon and elder at Stanford Presbyterian Church. Hugh was a private pilot,
loved to golf and was an avid UK fan.
He
is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth Marie Davis Helm.
Survivors
include his children, Hugh Barrett “Barry” Helm III and Jeffrey Davis Helm,
both of Stanford, and Katherine LaGro and her husband Parry of Pinecrest, Fla.;
a sister, Martha Ann McConnell of Danville;
and five grandchildren, Erin, Lauren, Carson, Chase and Carres LaGro.
An
Appreciation of Life Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Stanford

and Rehab in Berea, Ky.

Nov. 9, 1919, in Garrard County, Ky., he was a son of the late Ewell and Ellen
Saylor Hopkins. He lived in Alexandria, Ky., for many years while he was
employed as a driver and dock handler for Dixie Ohio
Express Co. in Cincinnati.
He was a Navy veteran having attended the rank of Seaman First Class. He also
was a farmer. He was a member of the First 12 Mile Baptist Church in Alexandria.
He was the widower of
Thelma Ann manning Hopkins, who preceded him in death on
Aug. 24, 1994.
Survivors
include four children, Phyllis (Roger) Adams of Crab Orchard, Yvonne (Les) Wolfe
of Buford, Ga., and Keith (Nyra) Hopkins and Roy (Sharon) Hopkins of Alexandria;

— William Chester Maddox, 82, of Moreland died Oct. 15, 2009.
Born
Feb. 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Sam and Orie Southerland Maddox. He
was a construction worker and loved carpentry, building birdhouses, churches,
etc. to give to friends. He was a faithful member of Charity Church of God in
Hustonville.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Simpson Maddox and a son, Kenneth
Maddox.

Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at her residence.

Wednesday, March 18, 1942, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of Winifred A.
“Winnie” Carter Carpenter of Danville and the late Hubert G. Carpenter. Mrs.
Miller was a former employee of
Certified Brake and a member of the First
Baptist Church of Danville. She was a 1960 Danville High School graduate. She
enjoyed sending and receiving greeting cards, talking on the phone, spending
time with her
grandchildren and eating at new and different restaurants. Mrs.
Miller also was a member of the Lunch Bunch and a former caregiver for the
elderly.

Ceremony
to honor sheriff killed in line of duty

Thomas
Wilson Napier, the only Lincoln County sheriff killed in the line of duty, will be
honored at 7 p.m. Thursday in a ceremony at his grave site in the Buffalo
Springs Cemetery. Napier was shot on
Sept. 18, 1869, behind the
Stanford Presbyterian Church when he tried to arrest 17-year-old Samuel Holmes
of Crab Orchard.
According
to newspaper accounts of the time, Holmes had been in town drinking and fired
his revolver into the ground. When Napier and Town Marshall E.M. Davison tried
to arrest him, Holmes turned and
shot Napier once in the abdomen and once in the
shoulder. The shooting took place around 8 p.m. on a Saturday night, and Napier
died around 10 p.m. Davison was also wounded in the incident but survived.
Napier’s
death ended a life of service to his nation and county. Born April 25, 1818, in
Virginia, his family moved to Casey County when he was a young man. Later, the
family moved to Lincoln County. In 1846,
Napier enlisted in the 2nd Ky
Volunteers during the Mexican War. Although he was enrolled as a corporal, he
was soon promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and fought in the Battle of Buena Vista.
Included in his company
were several men who would later fight in the Civil War,
some on the same side as Napier and others against him. Most notable was Frank
Wolford of Casey County, whose troops chased Napier’s troops during the
Civil
War. Wolford commanded the 1st Kentucky Union Cavalry.
After
the Mexican War, Napier served as state representative from Lincoln County and
was twice elected county judge. He was also superintendent of the County’s
poorhouse. When the Civil War began, he was
named assistant quartermaster for
the 1st Kentucky Confederate Cavalry. After his second term as judge ended in
August 1862, he helped organize the 6th Kentucky Confederate Cavalry in
September. The unit was
partially organized in the front yard of what is now
Nancy Hill’s home on Danville Avenue. James W. Alcorn, who was the adjutant
for the 6th Kentucky, built his home on that site to commemorate the
organization of the
Confederate Cavalry there.
Napier
was elected Lt. Colonel of the 6th. The unit was eventually assigned to the
command of Gen. John Hunt Morgan of Lexington and participated in Morgan’s
great raid into Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the summer
of 1863. The operation
was the most northern operation by uniformed Confederate soldiers during the
war.
While
many of Napier’s men were captured and imprisoned during the raid, Napier
managed to elude capture. Following Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox,
Napier’s unit was part of Confederate President
Jefferson Davis’ body guard
and was captured with Davis in Georgia in May 1865.
The
earliest record of his return to Lincoln County after the war is in the minutes
of Lincoln Lodge No. 60 of Free and Accepted Masons. Napier served the lodge as
master and secretary. His name shows up as
attending the lodge in December 1865.
Soon
after returning from the war, Napier received permission from the County Court
to rebuild the poorhouse of which he was again named superintendent. In August
1868, he was elected sheriff.
Following
his death, the Fiscal Court posted a $1,000 reward for the capture of his
killer. Tradition holds that after shooting Napier, Holmes fled to his
father’s home, which was near what is today the Hackley
family home on Boone
Road. Former County Attorney John Hackley said his late father, Charles, and
been told that Holmes was hidden in a well while the posse was hunting for him.
Despite the large reward,
Holmes was never captured. However, Hackley said his
father told him that years later the Holmes’ family had a farm tenant show up
on the farm that looked remarkably like Samuel Holmes.
Napier was never married but
did leave behind several siblings and nieces and nephews. Several of his
relatives are planning on attending the ceremony Thursday. The event is being
hosted by Lincoln Lodge No.
60 and is open to the public.

Vice-President and
CEO from the National Bank of Hustonville after 34 years in
1990.

was a lifelong, active member of the Mt. Salem Baptist Church. There B.C. served
for decades in numerous leadership positions: Deacon, treasurer, teacher and
role model.

was an avid fisherman and spent many days at the lake chasing crappie with his
friend, Irvin (Red) Jeffries. B.C. was known for his legendary garden and being
the consummate humanitarian shared more
with his neighbors than he ever used
himself. B.C. also loved his family farm, which he worked many years with
longtime friend, Albert Sallee.

ORCHARD — Raymond Nunn, 90, husband of Virginia P. Nunn and father of Frankie
Nunn, died Thursday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
He
was born February 14, 1919 in the Kettle Island Community of Bell County,
Kentucky. He was the son of the late William and Alice V. Coldiron Nunn. He and
his family moved to Lincoln County in
1930 and began farming.
He
farmed until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1, 1942 and served
during W.W. II. Attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant during the Rhineland and
Central Europe campaigns. He received a
Good Conduct Medal, European African
Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze service stars. He was a Purple Heart
Recipient. He was discharged from the Army on March 24, 1947.
He
was a member of Watts Chapel Baptist Church for over 50 years. Other memberships
include the National Rural Letter Carriers Association where he was a mail
carrier for 24 years for the U.S. Postal
Service. Member of the Disable American
Veterans, the 14th Armored Division Association and he was a Kentucky Colonel.

ORCHARD — Oscar Saylor, 91, of Fall Lick Road in
Crab Orchard, departed this life and entered into eternity on Sept. 7, 2009.
Born in Lincoln County on April 22, 1918, to the late Isaac and
Julia Blanton
Saylor, he was the husband of the late Mary Irvin Saylor.
He
was a farmer and a retired employee of the Bluegrass Stockyards in Lexington. He
was very devoted to his faith and his children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren. He was a tobacco farmer and raised
cattle on his farm his entire
life. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Pentecostal Church. He was loved so
dearly by each who knew him and he is going to be greatly missed.
He
is survived by a daughter, Geneva (Carl Edward) Houston of Mount Vernon; two
sons, William “Bud” Oscar Saylor of Crab Orchard and Albert L. (Ann) Saylor
of Dandridge, Tenn.; five grandchildren,
Gary Edward Houston, Stephanie A.
Lovell, Lissa C. Albright, Natalie M. Rupard and Julie J. Hansen; seven
great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Irene

ORCHARD — Isabella Celeste Shelton, daughter of Paul F. and Rhonda Rae Watts
Shelton of Crab Orchard, was stillborn on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Central Baptist
Hospital in Lexington.
Other
survivors include her sisters, Jaden Makenzie Shelton and Lauren Bailey Shelton;
maternal grandparents, William David and Pauline Watts; uncles, David Wayne
(Tonya) Watts and Greg (Debbie)
Shelton; an aunt, Dorothy Atkins; and several
cousins.
Isabella
was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Paul and Evaree Adams
Shelton; maternal great-grandparents, Woodrow Wilson, Leona Fields Watts, Lena
Wall Godbey and Russell
Winford Godbey.
Services
will be 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel officiated by
Bro. Kaywood Morris. Burial will be in Crab Orchard Cemetery.

— Shirley Sterns, 56, of Waynesburg died on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, in
Pulaski County.
Born
Oct. 18, 1952, in Stanford, she was the daughter of Bill and the late Lillian
Faye Shipp Rice. Shirley was manager of Eubank Chevron and a former employee of
Ruckel’s Grocery & Deli in Waynesburg.
She was a member of Eubank Church
of Christ. Shirley will be remembered for her love of all children, especially
her grandchildren.
Shirley
leaves behind her husband, Kenneth Sterns of Waynesburg; father, Bill Rice of
Stanford; a son, Kenny Sterns and his wife, Amy, of Somerset; two daughters,
Renee Wilson and her husband, Darren,
of Eubank, and Melissa Gosser and her
husband, Brian, of Richmond; two brothers, Patrick Rice and his wife, Marilyn,
of Stanford, and Tony Lee Rice and his wife, Brenda, of Fort Smith, Ark.; and
eight grandchildren.
A
Remembrance of Life Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Barnett & Demrow
Funeral Home with Bro. Ferlin Price officiating. Burial will be in Double
Springs Cemetery.

— Noah Lee Stull, infant son of Jessie and Christen Cartwright Stull passed
away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center,
Lexington.
Noah
leaves behind his paternal grandparents, Mary and Robert Whitaker of Kings
Mountain; aunts and uncles, Dewayne, Bobby and Misty Whitaker, Amy Adkins and
Asia Tucker.
The
service is 1 p.m. today at Friendship Old Regular Baptist Church. Burial will be
in Friendship Cemetery.

April 5, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Janie Hazlett Foley.

is survived by her husband, Russell Vargo of Louisville; 1 son, Jerry Johnson,
Jr. of Albany; 1 daughter, Mona Holley of Bowling Green; 1 brother, Melvin Foley
of Stanford; 2 sisters: Sheila Benedict and
Patricia Miracle, both of Stanford;
and 5 grandsons. She was preceded in death by a son, Jamie. Services will be at
2 PM, Saturday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home with burial in New Salem Cemetery.

King and Chris Brock.

Roy
Wallace, 94, of Stanford, formerly of
Parksville, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at his residence.
Born
Sunday, Oct. 25, 1914, in Grundy, Va., he was a son of the late Charles and
Carrie Johnson Wallace. He was a World War II Army veteran, a farmer and
gardener.
Mr.
Wallace graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in
agriculture. He was the widower of Delilah Belle Wiggs Wallace.
Survivors
include his daughter, Linda (James) Wiser of Stanford; a grandson, Michael
(Ashley) Wiser of Stanford; and great-grandchildren, Haley and Hayden Wiser,
both of Stanford.
He
was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
Graveside
services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at Bellevue Cemetery with
Bro. Dale Denton officiating.
Visitation
is 5-8 p.m. today at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home.

Nellie
Marie Barnett Williams, 79, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Sunday, Sept. 6.
She
was a substation manager for Dapper Dan Dry Cleaners in Houston, Texas for over
20 years, retiring in 1998.
She
was also preceded in death by a son, Rodney Sweeney; a brother, James Barnett;
and sister, Bonnie Shoultz.
Survivors
include her children, Janet (Phil) Armstrong, Ray (Marsha) Sweeney, Rhonda (Tim)
Krehbiel and Joseph (Vikki) Bowley; a brother, Charles Barnett; grandchildren,
Christopher, Samuel,
Courtney, Amanda, Marc, Brooke, Brandon, Nicholas, John,
Christina, Douglas Troy, Jason, Kristen and Brandy; and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be at 7 p.m. today (Sept. 10) at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral
Center ñ Lawrence in Indianapolis, Ind., and Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. at
the Highland Methodist Church in
Waynesburg. Burial will be in Highland
Methodist Cemetery.

— David Wilson, 61, Harrodsburg, husband of Carol Egbert Wilson, died Friday,
Oct. 16, 2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
Born
in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Webster and Permeila (Fletcher)
Wilson.
Survivors
include a daughter, Cassidy Wilson; three sons, Scott Wilson, Alex Wilson and
Seth Wilson; a sister, Rebecca Martin; a brother, Larry Wilson; and a
grandchild.
Memorial
services will be conducted at a later date.
