Born July 27, 1942, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Willie J. and Myrtle (Hines) Adams. He was the owner and operator of Adams Construction Co.

Survivors include a special companion, Carolyn Wooden; a sister, Bertha Cahill; and four brothers, Earl Adams, Bobby Adams, Clifford Adams and Kenneth Adams.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dan Gutenson officiating. Burial will be in Adams Cemetery.

STANFORD - Dora Roberts Atwood, 92, of Waynesburg died Tuesday.

Born Feb. 17, 1916, in Casey County, she was a daughter of the late Elisha and Oma Roy Roberts. She was a retired employee of Palm Beach Co., a homemaker and oldest living member of Jennies Chapel United Methodist Church in Windsor.

Survivors include two sisters, Fern Webster of Nashville, Tenn., and Jewell Mitchell of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fox Funeral Home with Bro. Ronald Moore officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

STANFORD - Cora Jane Baker, 69, of Crab Orchard died Tuesday.

Born Oct. 3, 1938, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Jonas and Mary Hopkins Baker. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Barry Baker of Inwood, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Amber Nicole and Adrian Anthony.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Watts Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Gutenson. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Spurlin Funeral Home of Stanford is in charge of arrangements.

MORELAND - Fannie Hall Barbati, 90, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Hustonville, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Born July 8, 1917, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Sarah Ann Childress Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Barbati.

Survivors include a son, John C. Barbati of Raleigh; a daughter, Denise Ann Reynolds of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Edrington of Nashville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born May 24, 1958, in Marion, Ind., she was a daughter of Donald Howard Smith of Waynesburg, and the late Geneva Ann Leach Smith. Teresa worked as a waitress.

Survivors include her four children, Chris Barbour, Harry Barbour and Ashley Barbour, all of Stuart, Fla., and Perry Barbour of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Rebecca S. Bruner of Stuart, Fla.; a brother, Donnie Smith of Waynesburg; and five grandchildren.

Doris Fleming Biles, 78, died Friday, June 6, 2008, after a brief illness.

Born June 4, 1930, in Stanford, she was the daughter of the late Ernest A. and Doris Griggs Fleming. She retired from Central Supply and Equipment Co. and was a bookkeeper for more than 25 years. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her son, Bill (Margaret) Biles of Lexington; a brother, Jim (Ruby Lea) Fleming of Old Hickory, Tenn.; two stepgrandchildren, Amy and Zach Hall; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bellevue Cemetery with the Rev. James Stewart officiating.

Donations are suggested to the Meals on Wheels program of the Presbyterian Church, Heritage Hospice or the Wilderness Trace Child Development Center.

LEXINGTON - Pascal "Pat" Bowles, 86, died Sunday at Sayre Christian Village. He was the husband of Louise Price Bowles for 66 years.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Thomas H. and Lena Epperson Bowles. He was a retired employee of IBM and a member of the Quarter Century Club. Mr. Bowles was a co-founder and elder of the former Eastland Christian Church.

Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Dianne (Joe) Curtis of Murray.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

CRAB ORCHARD — William Mitchelle “Billy” Brickey, 66, of Lancaster passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Ephraim McDowell Hospital in Danville. He was the husband of Treva Louise (Doughty) Brickey, whom he married on Oct. 6, 1967. Bill was born in Garrard County on Jan. 19, 1942, to the late Willard “Tuck” and Alice (Sowder) Brickey.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years; a sister, Carolyn Kinnaird of Lancaster; three nieces, Kimberly Edwards of Lancaster, and Sarah and Rachel Sims; and a great-nephew, Christopher Ballard.

Pallbearers include E.J. Hasty, Sammy Durham, Jerry Purcell, Rodney Sims and Russell Doughty.

CRAB ORCHARD - Nora Edna Gross Brock, 72, of Crab Orchard died Friday at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

She was the widow of Plese Brock Sr. She was born Oct. 7, 1935, in Harlan and was the daughter of the late Levi and Oma Griffey Gross. She was a homemaker and a very dear loving mother.

Survivors include five children, Sammy (Ruby) Brock, Plese (Linda) Brock Jr., Jackie Ellis (Debbie) Brock, Betty Ann (Joe) Sparrow and Gail Chochran; a sister, Betty (Bobby) McMahan; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Helen Greer; three sisters, Dorothy Mae Rodriguez, Shirley Wilson and Barbara Gonzales; and three brothers, Caleb, John D. and Eugene Gross.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at McKnight Funeral Home with burial in Crab Orchard Cemetery.

Mr. Omer Gilbert Brown, 82, of 140 Jefferson Ave., died Sunday, August 17, 1997 at Ephraim McDowell Medical Center in Danville. Born January 11, 1915 in Casey County, he was the son of the late Clayton F. and Mary Elizabeth McWhorter Brown. He was a retired farmer and member of Bethel Baptist Church.

 Survivors include: his wife, Lucy Lane Brown, Harrodsburg; one son, Omer Brown, Jr., Harrodsburg; seven daughters, Mary Rose Smith and Doris Brown, both of Harrodsburg, Alma Edgington, Swayzee, IN, Phyllis Hathaway, Upland, CA, Ila Hamsher, Pacifica, CA and Lana J. Callahan, Ft. Collins, CO, Bernice P. Lands, Danville; three brothers, Egbert Brown, Lincoln County, Clarence Austin Brown, Casey County, and Hobert Brown, Cincinnati, OH; two sisters, Iva Leach, Junction City and Mina Hemminger, Hale, MO; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Larry Brown.

 Services for Mr. Brown were held Wednesday, August 20, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jack Geurin and Rev. James Lynn officiating. Burial was in the Hustonville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Adrian Thompson, Bobby Christerson, LeRoy Mills, Scott Brown, Jackie Griffey and Wilson Pinkston.

STANFORD - Margaret J. Denny, 81, of Berea died Tuesday at Rockcastle Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Aug. 2, 1926, in Hardin County, she was a daughter of the late John and Laura Oaks Wise. She was a homemaker and a member of Hays Fork Baptist Church.

Margaret leaves behind three sons, Shelby (Karen) Lakes of Stanford, Matt (Jeannine) Lakes of Berea and Robert (Mary Ann) Denny of Stanford; two daughters, Velma Wood and beloved son-in-law Larry of Berea, and Dora Justice of Georgetown; a brother, Edmund (Zana) Wise of Germantown, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Woodrow and Noah Wise; and three sisters, Elsie Wise, Ella V. Staton and Eva Bowlin; her first husband, Oscar Lakes; and her second husband, Robert Denny Sr.

Services will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Fox Funeral Home with Bro. Vincent Carman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Survivors include her three sons, John Thomas (Catherine) Dishon of Stanford, and Tommy Lee (Debbie) Dishon and Paul Lewis Dishon, both of Danville; two daughters, Wanda (Paul) Chambers of Danville and Linda (Melvin) Rogers of Stanford; two brothers, Foster Humphrey of Upton and Jesse Humphrey of Louisville, Tenn.; a sister, Dorothy Gaddis of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Dishon of Stanford; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Arthur Dishon; a son, David Arthur Dishon; and a grandson, David Allen Dishon.

MORELAND - William Arthur Ellis, 92, of Rocky Ford died Monday in Danville.

Born June 19, 1915, in Casey County, he was a son of the late Johnson and Eva Mills Ellis. He was a retired farmer and a member of Rocky Ford Baptist Church and Rocky Ford Masonic Lodge No. 765.

Survivors include his son, John (Kacy) Ellis of Rocky Ford; two grandchildren, Jacy Pennington and Jessica Palmer; and two great-grandchildren, Noah and Ryder Pennington.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Powers Ellis; a brother, Hugh Ellis; and a sister, Mary Alice Morgan.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by Bros. Dale Denton, Jerry Adams and Brad Fleming. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery.

Albert “Bert” Fields, 80 died Monday, June 2 at Highlands Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Louisville.

A native of Stanford, he was born Oct. 11, 1927 to the late John Wesley Fields, Sr. and Luana Whitehead Fields. He was a 1945 graduate of Stanford High School where he played football and basketball, 1951 graduate of Centre College, earned doctorate degrees in English and philosophy from the University of Kentucky in 1967, was an Army veteran, professor at University of Southwestern Louisiana, an officer s and board member of the South Central Modern Language Association, the South Central Christianity and Literature Conference, and the South Central Renaissance Conference, an international scholar who represented the United States at conferences in Austria, Israel, The Netherlands, and Brazil, and enjoyed boating, fishing, visiting with neighbors, and traveling.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Wesley Fields, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, JoAn of Jamestown; two sons, Christopher (Allison) Fields of Costa Rica and Anthony Fields of New Mexico; a daughter, Sarah Beth Fields of California; sisters, Elizabeth Ruth Tobinski of Salt Lake City and LoAnn Blankenship of Lexington; one brother, Charles Marion Fields of Morehead; and nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Funeral services were June 6 with burial in Buffalo Springs Cemetery. Fox Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

CRAB ORCHARD — Thelma Lyttle Fletcher, 88, of Crab Orchard died Friday, May 30, 2008, at Hospice of Dayton, Ohio Pathways of Hope Medical Center.

She was the widow of Jim Fletcher and the daughter of the late William and Katy Katherine Jackson Lyttle. She was a loving mother, homemaker and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Metcalf, Martha Cowan, Janice (Jim) Southard and Mary (Jerry) Davidson; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren.

She was predeceased by sons Newtie and Bobby Fletcher, brothers Roy Lyttle and William Lyttle Jr., and sisters Maxine Jackson and Jean Brown.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Brother Cecil Roundtree. Burial will be in Crab Orchard Cemetery.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bill, Eddie and Danny Hawley, Larry and Terry Pettit, Billy Day, Oscar “Bud” Saylor and Jacob Andrew Rowe.

CRAB ORCHARD - Ponza Eaton Green, 86, of Crab Orchard died Monday.

Born Nov. 19, 1921, in Gurn Sulphur, she was a daughter of the late Steve Monroe and Eutha Masters Eaton.

She worked as a nurse for Garrard County Hospital and was a member of Brodhead Christian Church, Brodhead Eastern Star and Brodhead Ameranths. She also was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include five sisters, Lona Slayback and Dessie Tankersley, both of Crab Orchard, Juanita Cummins of Preachersville, Edith Lanham of Corbin, Ima Jean (Eddie) Bryant of Lily and Ruth (Paul) Doyle of Richmond; a brother, Billy Ray (Patsy) Eaton of Richmond; a special niece, Brenda Clark of Crab Orchard; a great-niece, Angela (Bert) King of Mount Vernon; a great-nephew, Doug (Debbie) Brock of Crab Orchard; great-great-nieces, Niki Carpenter, Autumn, Keelee, Haven and Taylor King; a great-great nephew, Jadon Brock; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson L. Green; her parents, Steve and Eutha Eaton; sisters, Doris Baldwin and Pearl Eaton; and a brother, Eugene Eaton.

STANFORD - Jewell Harris, 73, of Stanford died Tuesday.

Born April 20, 1934, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Anna Marie Thomas Warmouth. She worked at Cowden Manufacturing Co. in Lancaster for 35 years and was a member of Stanford Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lois Harris of Stanford; two daughters, Betty (Sam) Blevins and Susan Smith, both of Stanford; a brother, Morris Warmouth of Texas; four sisters, Dorothy Martin of Danville, Anna Mae Yocum of Stanford, and Nancy Collins and Peachie Sinkhorn, both of Akron, Ohio; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, James Earl Warmouth and Cowboy Warmouth.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spurlin Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Geisler officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

James Hensley, 59, of Somerset, died Tuesday, June 3 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

A native of Highland, he was born Feb. 17, 1949 to Nancy Hoskins McAninch of Poplarville and the late Bennie Hensley. He enjoyed Nascar, fishing and was of the Baptist faith.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Mark Allen Hensley; and an infant sister, Sue Hensley.

WAYNESBURG — Joyce Ann Ivy, 61, of Dunnville in Casey County, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, at her residence.

Born Nov. 8, 1946, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Whitt Relford and the late Betty Jean Naylor. She was a retired waitress. Joyce loved flowers and little children.

Joyce leaves behind a son, Kevin Joseph (Brenda) Ivy of Sharpsburg; two daughters, Kim (John) Boggs of Louisa and Kathy Ivy of Dunnville; a special niece, Renee Thrasher of Harrodsburg; three brothers, Andrew Relford of Cynthiana, and Bobby and Ronnie Relford, both of Lexington; four sisters, Joan Williams, Charlene Atkins and Pam Williams, all of Lexington, and Tina Coleman of McKinney; a granddaughter, Jessica Boggs; and an honorary grandson, Keith Daniel White.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Parks Ivy; a son, Keith Ivy; a brother, Donald Relford; and a sister, Judy Vanderpool.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Barnett and Demrow Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the funeral home.

Lillian Carver James, 94, of Crab Orchard, passed away peacefully at home Thursday morning, Jan. 31, 2008.

Born in Lester on Sept. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Ida Smith Carver. She grew up in Lester and was a graduate of Trap Hill High School.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Kenneth Russell “Duke” James; son, Thomas James; brothers, Wallace Smallwood and James Millard Walker, buried at Arlington National Cemetery; sisters, Peggy Walker Snodgrass and Betty Walker Bennett and husband, Earl; and nephew, Michael Hresan.

Survivors are two sons, Kenneth Duke James of Crab Orchard and George Carver James of Daniels; daughter, Mary Katherine and husband, Dr. Bill Moorman, of Valdosta, Ga.; three grandsons, Dr. Kenneth Duke James and wife, Stacey, of Mebane N.C., Dr. W. Mrs. James managed and owned James Grocery Store in Crab Orchard for 20-plus years. After that she worked with the mental health department. At age 59 she was the founding director of the Raleigh County Sheltered Worshop, now the Lillian James Learning Center, and remained the executive director up until her death. She spent two terms in the West Virginia Silver Haired Legislature, a 75-year-plus member of the Degree of Honor. Mrs. James was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church for 71 years. She was involved for most of her life with the Beckley Area Foundation. She was a charter member of the Orchard Valley Women’s Club and served as president and was Woman of the Year. In 2002, she was chosen West Virginia’s representative to Washington, D.C., for the Older Working Americans Convention. Joe Manchin, while secretary of state, presented her with the highest Medal of Honor, that can be given to a citizen. The awards and acknowledgements she received line the walls of her home.

One couldn’t meet her without loving her. She was ointment to the broken-hearted, sunshine to the lonely, and always was a help in times of need. Her strong work ethic and impeccable integrity had a way of making life better for everyone around her. Our mom possessed all the good traits in life. She was a loving, forgiving, and faithful, generous, encouraging, very wise, honest and trustworthy.

Mom was strong, yet resilient, and firm with her discipline. We can still hear those keen switches swooshing in the air. When it was time to play, there were no two people more fun to be with than our Mom and Dad.

At a very young age we knew we would go to college. Mom wanted us to have an education. Sometimes I wish we had all sent her to college. However, I realize she would have never quit her job to do so. What a privilege and an honor to have grown up with her at the helm of our lives. She and Dad not only raised the four of us, but they raised her two younger sisters before we came along. Then, one young cousin stayed with us while her parents went to find work in the D.C. area when the mines closed. Three other cousins took their turns while attending Beckley College.

Even after leaving the nest, we siblings tried to plan our trips to Crab Orchard all at the same time. Usually our roommates were quick to say, “Can I go, too?” Everyone who ever visited our home or knew Mom and Dad were always treated like family. Their hospitality was like a magnet. There was never a shortage of hilarious stories (the kind you never get tired of hearing) great food to eat and fun games to play. Mom made sure we realized that we would be faced with problems in life. She taught us to learn from the bad, hold onto the good from those experiences and move on. God gives us the strength to do so.

Care givers were Dorothy Koontz, Brenda Heath, Daphne Suddreth, Norma Raines, Mary Fink and Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

Services for Lillian James are at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, with visitation 4 to 9 p.m. today and funeral service at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers in attendance will be Ashley Moorman, Ryan Moorman, Ken James, Russell Perkins, Ed Habib and Ronald Reid. STANFORD - Michael Gene Lucas, 56, of Stanford died Tuesday.

Born Jan. 16, 1952, in Lincoln County, he was a son of Matrie Estes Lucas of Stanford and the late William Ress Lucas. He was a consultant and salesman for 20 years at Stanford Wood Products. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and an Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam era.

Other survivors include his wife, Donna Allen Lucas of Stanford; two sons, Brian Shane Cook and William Grant (Kristen) Lucas, both of Stanford; a brother, William Steven (Sandy) Lucas of Stanford; and a sister, Lisa (Gary) Sheldon of Waynesburg.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Springs Cemetery by the Revs. Terry Holt and Ben Curtis.

Elly Whitfield Mason, 99, of Kings Mountain, died Wednesday, May 14 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville. A native of Lincoln County, he was born Friday, March 19, 1909 to the late Lewis and Ceclia Routin Mason.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Herbert Mason; a daughter, Rosa Calfee; and two brothers, Lloyd and Jessie Mason.

Thomas Ray "Tom" Miller, 53, of Danville, died Saturday.

Born July 21, 1954, in Stanford, he was a son of the late Thomas Webster Miller and Dorothy Marie King Miller. A 1972 graduate of Casey County High School, Tom graduated from Lindsey-Wilson College with an associate degree and from Cumberland College with a bachelor's degree. He earned his master's degree in psychology at the University of Louisville. In 1983, he received a presidential certificate and was named Jaycee of the Year for Kentucky. He is a member of Church of God and had been a math and science teacher at Barrett High School in Louisville, and at Casey County High School.

Survivors include his sister, Connie Atwood of Somerset; two half brothers, Doodle Campbell and Gary Campbell, both of Liberty; a half sister, JoAnn Smith of Danville; a niece, Amanda Marie (Billy) Atwood; a nephew, Aaron Bruce Atwood; and two great-nieces, Bellamy Hope Rogers and Kaci Faith Rogers.

Kelly Dean Rice, 71, of Harrodsburg, husband of Doris "Peggy" Merriman Rice, died Monday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington.

Born March 2, 1937, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late John Jackson and Julie Southerland Rice. He was a retired drywall contractor and owner of Rice Drywall Co., a founding member of Shelby Baptist Church and a Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed fishing and reading.

Other survivors include his sons, Ricky G. Rice and his wife Marie of Harrodsburg, Drew Rice and his wife Cari of Harrodsburg, and Robin Merriman, whom he raised as a son, and his wife Jackie, also of Harrodsburg; Jacqueline Darlene Merriman, whom he raised as a daughter; five brothers, Billy Rice of Nancy, Dwain Rice of Liberty, Paul Rice of Moreland, Charles Rice of Corinth and J.T. Rice of Junction City; his grandchildren, Megan and Ashley Rice, and Kellie Renee Schaub, whom he thought of as a granddaughter; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jeremy and Jenna Schaub; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Oct. 10, 1930 in Casey County, she was the daughter of the late George Sherman and Dansel Cochran Shoopman.

She is survived by her husband, Bobbie Smith of Hustonville; 2 sons, Bobbie Gene (Dianna) Smith of Stanford and James Paul (Glenda) Smith of Hustonville; 1 daughter, Carolyn (Danny) Exline of Jackson, OH; 1 brother, Walter “Shorty” Shoopman of Lancaster; 2 sisters, Wavie Snow of Hustonville and Deltha Turpin of Liberty; 5 grandchildren: Amanda Smith, Becky Alford, Marty Exline, Heather Michaels and Megan Phillips; and 3 great-grandchildren: Whitney Alford and Katie and Ryan Exline.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by Bro. David Smith with burial in Hustonville Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Grant Alford, Larry Mobley, Curtis Evans, Billy Douglas, Michael Southerland and Tommy Smith.

CRAB ORCHARD - Floyd "Buster" Smith, 92, of Crab Orchard passed away Friday at the UK Hospital in Lexington. He was the widower of Ruthelma McKinney Smith, who preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2005.

He was born Sept. 28, 1915, to the late William and Myrtle (Poynter) Smith in Rockcastle County. He was a farmer and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Wanda (Marvin) Jones, Vivian (Jerome) Weaver and Norma Jean (Jerry) Lay; eight sons, Lester (Loretta) Smith, Edward (Judy) Smith, Johnny (Louetta) Smith, Elby (Wendy) Smith, Denver (Gladys) Smith, Jeff (Phyllis) Smith, David (Violet) Smith and Ronnie Smith; a brother, Arvil Smith; a sister, Elizabeth Bullock; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Smith was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Lorene Coldiron and Viola Smith; and four brothers, William, Kenneth, Joe and Walter Smith.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at McKnight Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Crab Orchard Cemetery.

CRAB ORCHARD - James Douglas Smith, 58, died Sunday.

Born Feb. 16, 1950, in Lincoln County, he was a son of Henrietta Smith and the late James W. "Watt" Smith. He was a dairy farmer and a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his mother, Henrietta Shelton Smith of Crab Orchard; five daughters, Mindy, Melissa, Monica, Gabrielle and Kim; three sons, Chris, Jamie and Greg; two grandsons, James Douglas and Ian; and two granddaughters, Danielle and Alexis. He was preceded in death by his father, James W. "Watt" Smith.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at McKnight Funeral Home.

SCIENCE HILL — Lilah Ellen Standish, 65, of Ky. 3244 in Crab Orchard died Wednesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1943, in Ypsilanti, Mich., she was the daughter of the late George N. and Dorsie Godbey Ferguson. She was a factory worker for BPI, Affinia Brake Parts in Stanford.

She is survived by two sons, Roy A. Standish of Waynesburg and Timothy (Sharon) Standish of Ypsilanti; a daughter, Kelly Standish of Richmond; a brother, Larry Ferguson of Ypsilanti; two grandchildren, Timothy Standish and Arron Standish; and two stepgrandchildren, Sharie Lincoln and Michelle Novak.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy M. Standish, who died on April 29, 1985; her parents; and two brothers, Terry Ferguson and Thomas Beck.

Services were Saturday at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Dixboro, Washtenaw Co., Mich.

STANFORD — Selma May Stempfly, 80, of Ottenheim, passed away Friday at her residence.

Born June 4, 1927, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Laura Sims Gutenson. She was a homemaker and the widow of the late Gilbert Stempfly.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol (David) Shannon of Jacksboro, Tenn., and Deborah (Eric) Ann Anderson of Lexington.

Other survivors include a brother, Foster Gutenson of Indianapolis; a sister, Mary Motz of Goshen, Ohio; two grandchildren, Laura Edwards and Mike Fole; and a great-granddaughter, Cassidy Edwards.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 2, at Fox Funeral Home with Brother Dan Gutenson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MORELAND - Bessie Lee McCowan Wilder, 98, of Stanford died Sunday at home.

Born Dec. 21, 1909, she was a daughter of the late William and Ethel Josephine Gaddis McCowan. She worked as a nursing assistant at the Kentucky Department of Resources and was a member of Mount Salem Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Wilder, and a son, Lowell Wilder.

She is survived by two daughters, Josephine Dixon of Blanchester, Ohio, and Alsie Napier of Stanford; two sons, Carl (Charlene) Wilder and James (Ella) Wilder, both of Hustonville; a brother, Harold McCowan of Junction City; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home by Bro. Mike Mullins and Bro. Travis Farris. Burial will be in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

He was a native of Stanford, an Army veteran, member of American Legion Post No. 157 and VFW Post No. 5710, and retired from Jim Beam.

He is survived by his brother, Edward Wilder; sisters, Grace Bradbury and Daisy Harp; plus many nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Fox Funeral Home with burial in Buffalo Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include sons, Alberta Woodall of Stanford, Billy Woodall (Phylis) of Waynesburg and Jerry Woodall of Stanford; daughters, Lana McPherson (William) of Crab Orchard and Wanda Peck (Lyndon) of Stanford; sister, Bea Stringer (Bill Wilson) of Stanford; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James Woodall; two brothers; and two sisters.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at Buffalo Springs Cemetery as prearranged by the deceased. The Rev. Tim Brown will be officiating.
