WITHERS, Elizabeth “Lizzie”

April 17, 1855 – October 09, 1872

October 9th, 1872, near Stanford, Lincoln County, Ky., Miss Lizzie Withers, daughter of Mr. Horace Withers, in the 18th year of her age, It is sad to record the death of one so young and beautiful. Just blooming into womanhood, with so much of promise in the coming years. It seems she was too youg to die, yet to beautifully pure for earth. She was one of those sweet persons whose presenelent a charm to every circle, and her absence impressed her friends with a deep sense of loss.  Accessible to all, both rich and poor, she was fondly loved by all who knew her, while her tenderness and sympathy was lost upon none.

Miss Lizzie was gifted with more than ordinary mind. The best educational advantage were bestowed upon her and improved with dilligent application. Her mind was tored with a varied information, and for one so young, she had an unusual acquaitance with the best authors. With such attainmet she was charmingly modest and unassuming.

She was more than a dutiful daugher; she was devoted to her father, in seeking his comfort and happiness, by every little attention, making home pleasant and attractive, by many inventions of a loving heart and the calm, quiet jovouness of her sweet spirit; but she has bone to join the sainted mother in heaven. As a sister, she was gentle and tender in her affection; contributing to the pleasure and enjoyment of her brother and sisters, and shareing with them every  trouble and sorrow. To them, hers was a delightful fellowship. She was ready with counsel, confidence, sympathy and self-denial. She was the joy of home, fondley loved  and doted upon. Her death, while an infinite gain, was to her family, relatives and friends, a sad and lamintable loss.

The church of which she was a member and an ornament, has also sustained a great loss. She was a devoted Christian nearly four years. She loved the blessed Savior, and was struggling after his purity and spiritual excellence, copying His life into her own. She was (no preventing Providence) always in attendance upon the worship of God, enjoying the devotion and instruction of the Lord’s house. She sacrificed every other occasion to be present at the prayer-mettings, and attened the Sunday school, either as a pupil or teacher, thus mking use of God’s grcious instrumentalities for her own growth in grace and the knowledge of the word of God as well as contributing the weitht of her personal influence and every possible means of advancing the cause of truth and righteousness. Those who knew her felt the sanctity of her young, beautiful life. She was a model of Christian excellence, worthy the imitation of old and young. She has gone to realize the blessedness of the life that never ends, that knows no care, no sickness, no death. After an illness of five weeks she resigned herself submissively to the will of God, and fell asleep in Jesus.

The large attendance fo friends upon the occasion of her funeral, attested how dearly she was loved, as well as the sorrow and sympathy for the sadly berieved family.
