ANNA MAR UMBER-BERRY was born on May 6, 1906 in Livingston and entered eternal rest May 10, 2002. She was the third of eight children born from the union of Effie Robinson and Robert James Umber, who married on March 21, 1900. She attended the Williamsburg Colored Academy, where upon completing grade 8, pupils stayed on for further education per Professor Bond. Ms. Anna Mae accepted the Christian faith as a young girl and served the church diligently in several capacities until her failing health took its toll. She cared about people and was always willing to be helpful in case of sickness or need. Her first two marriages ended in divorce. On March 4, 1940 she and Frank K. Berry were married. He passed away in 1995. She worked in the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. Elmer Mahan for many years. She and her husband served faithfully on that job. On Sunday, March 25, 1984 the Berrys were featured in the Weekend Focus of the Corbin Times Tribune: "With Time On Their Hands, Berrys Relive the Mahan Years", pages 1 and 2 by Jill Lyttle. Ms. Anna Mae was a role model for many of her relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed. Her husband, Frank K. Berry, preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Carrie Bennett Stewart of Brooklyn, New York; brother, Robert Arnold Umber of Williamsburg; granddaughter, Lisha Stewart Cole (Leroy, Jr.) of Din Hills, New York; grandson, John F. Stewart (Girsie) of Louisville; great-grandsons, Leroy Cole III and Jerome Cole of Din Hills, New York; nieces, Eva D. Avery, Anna Joyce Mapp; nephews, Harold Umber, Richard Umber; brother-in-law, William McCarver; sister-in-law, Melvina Umber; nieces, Emily Greenlee and Nellie Williams of Dayton, Ohio; 18 great-nieces and -nephews, several favorite cousins and many good friends who loved her dearly. There is no night without a dawning no winter without spring. And beyond death's dark horizon our hearts once more will sing. For those who leave us for a while have only gone away. Out of a restless, careworn world into a brighter day. Submitted in sorrow, The Family Funeral services were held at noon on Thursday, May 16 at the Elm Street Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Littlejohn officiating. Burial followed in the Briar Creek Cemetery. Ellison Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. |
