Roy S. Smith, 75, of Gray, Ky., passed away Monday, March 18, 2002 at his home in Gray. He was the son of the late John H. Smith and the late Myrtle Gilbert Smith and was born to them on Sept. 5, 1926 at Crane Nest, Ky. He was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church of Bailey Switch where he served as deacon. He was a graduate of Union College and served in the U.S. Navy. He taught school in the Knox County School system for three years and as retired from the Department for Social Services. On Oct. 15, 1949, he was united in marriage to Merle Carty and to this union five children were born. ON May 19, 1993, she preceded him in death. On Dec. 16, 1995 he was united in marriage to Thelma Bingham. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Bingham, of Gray, Ky., his children, Diana Farmer and husband, Don of Bailey Switch; Debbie Grubb and husband, David of Bailey Switch; Sharon Colyer and husband, Doug of London; Janet Neal and husband Ralph of Gray; and Dr. Mark S. Smith and wife, Tammy of Hunting Shirt. Mr. Smith is also survived by his four beloved stepchildren, David Bingham and wife, Malena of Heidrick; Gary Bingham and wife, Bernadette of Gray, Janice Sacca and husband, Jimmy of Lexington; and Jennifer Cataldo and husband, John of Jupiter, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Robin Grubb Deaton, Brooke Grubb, Dana Farmer, Beth Farmer, Amanda Farmer, Christopher Neal, Laura Neal, Andrew Neal, Matthew Smith and Aaron Smith; two great grandchildren, Zachary Deaton and Allison Bargo; nine step-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild. He is survived by his brother, Charles Smith of London; Loretta Church of Belpre, Ohio; Shirley Riggleman of Massillon, Ohio and Joyce Drucker of Bridgeville, Penn. Mr. Smith leaves a host of many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors to mourn his passing. Funeral services for Roy S. Smith will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William Wolfe and the Rev. Darrell Bargo officiating. Interment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery at Girdler. Pallbearers will be friends of the Smith family. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. The Smith family has suggested that contributions may be made to the Hospice Organization or to the American Cancer Society in Loving Memory of Roy S. Smith. Hopper Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
