Calvin T. Smith
(September 2, 1930 - November 22, 2007)

U.S. Veteran Calvin T. Smith, age 77 of Barbourville, died on Thursday November 22, 2007 in the Knox County Hospital. He was the son of the late Enoch and Bessie Smith. Calvin was born on September 2, 1930 in Bell County, Kentucky. Calvin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Barbourville. On November 2, 1958 he united in marriage with Nancy Melton. He was a retired Lt. Colonel of the U.S. Army having served two tours in Vietnam. Mr. Smith was a graduate and former football player for the University of Kentucky. He served on the Barbourville City Counsel for 16 years, was a street commissioner, a former member of the Barbourville Kiwanis, was a lifetime director of the Daniel Boone Festival, a Kentucky Colonel and a former volunteer Knox Central Football Coach. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

Calvin is survived by his wife Nancy Smith of Barbourville. His son Calvin Scott Smith of Barbourville. A daughter, Susan Annette Jones and husband Charles Casey of Barbourville. His Grandchildren, Patrick Lee Smith, Nancy Hannah Jones, Adam Christopher Smith, Callie Elizabeth, and Walton Casey Jones. One sister, Selma Castagna of Arlington, Virginia. He also leaves behind many other dear family and friends.

Funeral services for Calvin Smith will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday November 25, 2007 at 2:00pm with Rev. James Vandy officiating. Burial will follow in the Barbourville Cemetery with Jack Ketchum, Jerry Carey, Dr. Ben Wilson, Greg Stewart, George Hammons, and James Warren serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Brothers-in-law, Nick Melton, Sam Melton, and Hank Melton. All Calvins friends, Guy Millward, Kenneth Cobb, Eric Musgrave, Ray Blair Canady, Wilbur Evans, Steve Farmer, Mike Smith, Jack Sellards, John Spivey, Charles Buchanan, Dennis Jackson, Lewis Hopper, Dr. Andre Collins, Tim Broughton, Lawrence Stewart, the Knox County Hospital Long Term Care Employees, and the members of the Barbourville Fire Department. The Smith family will receive friends at Hopper Funeral Home on Saturday from 6:00pm until 9:00pm, and on Sunday after 10:00am until the Funeral hour at 2:00pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Hopper Funeral Home.
